In the month of May 🌸, when the spring's softness is at its peak 🌞, the city of Saumur, in the Loire Valley, hosts the Loire Marathon. Under a beautiful sun and pleasant temperatures 😌, perfect for tackling kilometers, the Maine-et-Loire department is the setting for one of France's most beautiful events 🇫🇷. You are offered 3 different events: a marathon (53 mD+), a half-marathon, and a combined event (two-person canoe 🛶 & running 👟), for those who love both land 🪴 and water 💧. Original? That's the goal! 😏 Another good news: the 21 km and 42 km are accessible to para-athletes ♿️. We'll tell you more about the Loire Marathon ⬇️.
As you've gathered, if the 42 miles of the marathon seem a bit too much for you, it's not a problem 👐. You also have the option to split the pear 🍐 in two ✌️ with the half-marathon. Otherwise, if you're even more eager to cut it in half, you can choose the combined canoe and running event! 🏃♀️ This event, done in pairs 🖇️ (it's more practical and much more fun 😜), is a rare and challenging nature race that promises a rich emotional experience 🫶. The concept is simple: 12 km on the Loire in a two-person canoe before hitting the pavement on 17 km of running. This event is unquestionably the flagship attraction of this competition, requiring as much technique as complicity and mental strength with your partner 👫.
However, don't make the error of assuming it's the most beautiful... or even the most mythical! 🙅♀️ The reputation of the Loire Marathon is well-established. Last year, there were 6,000 runners (😯) gathered for the 42 km start and 4,500 for the 21 km. The FFA Regional Label has also made the marathon a qualifying event ✔️ for the French Championship 🇫🇷. These races, as beautiful as they are demanding, promise to offer you an exceptional panorama 😍 and an electrifying atmosphere ⚡. Indeed, it's the historic town 📚 of Saumur, UNESCO World Heritage-listed 🌎, that hosts the event, a short distance from its famous castle🏰. In terms of scenery, you'll be spoiled straight away! Between wooded and rural landscapes 🌳, you'll be able to admire all the beautiful houses lining the royal river 👑, since the banks of the charming city will be your playground 🛝 throughout the events... When you're not directly in the water (canoe event)! 😂 Naturally, the castle, rated a historic monument since 1862, will always be the backdrop of this fabulous setting 💫.
But that's not all that makes the Saumur Marathon ✋ famous. The big plus ➕ for athletes is also the nonexistent elevation difference 📏. Yes, if you're cheating on the trail, it might feel odd! 😅 On the other hand, if you want to clock your best time ⌚, it’s ideal! It's quite easy to explain: your route will meticulously follow the banks of the Loire 🌊, taking you through villages like Saint-Lambert-des-Levées, Saint-Martin-de-la-Place, Saint-Clément-des-Levées, Gennes, Les-Rosiers-sur-Loire, Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent... Plenty of small communes that will certainly add charm to the event! 💛
This doesn’t mean your walk will be all rest! Be aware that the Loire Marathon is also a superb atmosphere all along the route, with local music groups 🎷🎹 and even DJs positioned at key spots to accompany your strides 🎛️. In total, on the marathon, there are 42 activities waiting for you. You got it right, one for every km ! 👏 There will be a large crowd at your finish line! 📣 After running all those kilometers, you'll have well earned a little glass 🍷 of Anjou wine as a reward! No, actually, it's rather bubbly glasses 🫧 that will welcome you 🍾. By the way, note that the prizes should motivate you: a nice jacket 🧥 and a bottle of Loire sparkling wine for marathoners 🎁.
Life is a long, peaceful river of 21.0975 km, 42.195 km, or filled with canoeing!

At the 20th kilometer, you cross the Loire by way of Île de Gennes 🌉. Then, head to the other bank for the return, where you'll discover Saint-Clément-des-Levées and Saint-Martin-de-la-Place. From the 37th kilometer, Île de Millocheau welcomes you for a final push 🔥 before returning to Saumur to complete the loop 🔁.
For those who enjoy half measures (but not too much 🙃), the Half is perfect! 😆 You start from Rosiers-sur-Loire and head to Saumur by taking the marathon return route. Throughout the course, the Loire will keep you company, with its shimmering reflections soothing your pain 😌.
Cherry on the cake 🍰: you'll tour the islands of Millocheau and Offard, natural gems that will give you wings 🪽 to cross the finish line. No need to be a seasoned marathon runner to experience a magnificent adventure! 💥
Want to spice up your run? The Combined is here for you, adventurous soul! 🌟 This unique event offers you a challenge that is both athletic and friendly. In duo, you start with 12 km in a two-seater canoe on the Loire 🚣♂️.
Once your paddle is stored, it's time for the run: 17 km on the half-marathon course to Saumur. With your partner, you'll share moments of camaraderie and pushing your limits with lots of splashes to boot 💦.
