The event in a few words

In the month of May 🌸, when springtime mildness is at its peak 🌞, the city of Saumur, in the Pays de la Loire, hosts the Loire Marathon. Under bright sunshine and mild temperatures 😌—perfect for clocking up the kilometers—the department of Maine-et-Loire becomes the stage for one of the finest events in France 🇫🇷. Three different events are offered: a marathon (53 mD+), a half-marathon, and a combined event (two-seater canoe 🛶 & running 👟) for those who love land 🪴 as much as water 💧. Original? That’s the point! 😏 More good news: the 21 km and the 42 km are open to para-athletes ♿️. Here’s more about the Loire Marathon ⬇️.

As you’ve understood, if the 26.2 miles of the marathon are a bit too much for you, no problem 👐. You can also split the difference 🍐 in two ✌️ with the half-marathon. Or, if you feel like cutting things in half even more, you can choose the combined canoe and running event! 🏃‍♀️ This event, done in pairs 🖇️ (it’s more practical and much more fun 😜), is a rare and challenging nature race that promises those who take it on an emotion-packed experience 🫶. The concept is simple: 12 km on the Loire in a two-seater canoe before hitting the road for 17 km of running. This event is, without a doubt, the flagship asset of the competition since it requires as much technique as chemistry and mental strength with your partner 👫.

Still, don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s the prettiest... or even the most legendary! 🙅‍♀️ The Loire Marathon’s reputation is well established. Last year, 6,000 runners (😯) gathered to start the 42 km and 4,500 for the 21 km. The FFA National Label has also made the marathon a qualifying event ✔️ for the French championship 🇫🇷. These races, as beautiful as they are demanding, promise you an exceptional panorama 😍 and an electrifying atmosphere ⚡. Indeed, it is the history-laden city 📚 of Saumur, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌎, that hosts the event, just a stone’s throw from its famous château 🏰. Scenery-wise, you’ll be spoiled right away ! Between wooded and countryside landscapes 🌳, you’ll be able to admire all the beautiful houses lining the royal river 👑, since the banks of this charming city will be your playground 🛝 throughout the events... when you’re not directly in the water (the canoe event)! 😂 Of course, the château—listed as a historic monument since 1862—will always be in the background of this fabulous setting 💫.

But that’s not everything that makes the Saumur Marathon ✋ famous. The big plus ➕ for athletes is also the non-existent elevation gain 📏. Yes, if you’re cheating on trail running, it might feel strange! 😅 On the other hand, if you want to hit your best time ⌚, it’s perfect! It’s easy to explain: your race will follow the banks of the Loire 🌊 closely, taking you through villages such as Saint-Lambert-des-Levées, Saint-Martin-de-la-Place, Saint-Clément-des-Levées, Gennes, Les-Rosiers-sur-Loire, Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent... Plenty of small towns that will bring a certain charm to the event! 💛

That doesn’t mean your stroll will be easy! Know that the Loire Marathon also means a fantastic atmosphere all along the course, with local music groups 🎷 and even DJs posted at key spots to accompany your strides 🎛️. In total, on the marathon, 44 entertainment points await you. Yes, you understood correctly, one at every km! 👏 The crowd will be out in force at your finish! 📣 After running all those kilometers, you’ll have earned a little glass 🍷 of Anjou wine as a reward! No, actually, it’s more like glasses of bubbly 🫧 that will welcome you 🍾. By the way, the prizes should motivate you: a nice jacket 🧥 and a bottle of Loire crémant for marathon runners 🎁.

Life is a long, calm river of 21.0975 km, 42.195 km, or filled with canoeing!

4 reasons to join this race

Races to smash records 💥
With very flat (53 mD+) and fast courses, the marathon and half-marathon are perfect for blowing up the clock. Obviously, that only applies to the running races, because the canoe event is more about going with the flow! 😂 The Loire Marathon is therefore ideal for starting out at this distance or going after a personal best ⏱️.
The combined event 🔗
A triple-combined event: two sports, two different terrains, and two participants on a team 🤝. A perfect challenge for those who like to push themselves and not be alone.
A party atmosphere 🥳
Running is good. Doing it with music is better. That’s what the Loire Marathon organizers understood... just as they included entertainment, DJs 📀 and musical pop-ups 🎸 at every kilometer. No need to fully charge your battery or bring your headphones—what a treat! 🦶
Saumur, oh Saumur 🤩
The word says it all: Saumur. This historic, listed city offers a wealth of exceptional scenery and is sure to win you over! 😍 Let yourself be lulled by the gentle sound of the water flowing in the bed of the Loire, the birds singing in the surrounding nature, and the incredible view of the château overlooking the town. You’ll want more! 👍
