Looking to run under the sun in early January? 🌞
No need to pack a puffer jacket in your suitcase 🧳, you’re heading to the south of Sicily! 📍 On the beautiful island of Italy, the Ragusa Marathon (or 22nd Mangia's Maratona Di Ragusa 2027 by its real name 🤓) stands out in the landscape of the country’s road races 😎. And speaking of landscapes: you’re going to see the sights over 42 km! 🗺️ Countryside, villages, typical hamlets with dry-stone walls 🏘️, Ragusa will hold no more secrets for you! 👀 By the way, you’ve probably noticed that the city of Ragusa is made up of two parts: the upper town, Ragusa Nuova, and a lower, older town, Ragusa Ibla. Height means elevation gain, but don’t panic—the Ragusa Marathon has just one big climb in store for you 🤗.
You’ll have to earn that finish line! ☝️ Marathon, half marathon, 21 km walk, 10.1 km race, or the "Family Run" of 3.2 km 🏃♀️—the goal will be the same for everyone: reach Piazza Duomo ⬆️. During the day’s flagship event, you’ll get to discover the villages on the outskirts of this two-tier town 🤓. You’ll pass through Cilone, Tre Casuzze, Monachella, Cisternazzi, Fortugno, the industrial zone 🏭 and the mining area ⛏️ before enjoying a 6 km downhill section 📉. At km 38, things get tougher: it’s going to climb! You’re about to reach the upper historic center via the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Cattedrale di San Giovanni. After discovering UNESCO monuments such as the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale ⛪️, Palazzo Cosentini, the Church of Purgatory and Palazzo Sortino-Trono 👑, you’ll still need to hang on a little longer! 💪 A brutal 300-meter climb on Via XI Febbraio will finish off your calves (and maybe your morale 🥵). Yep, Ragusa wears you out! 😲
Once your medal is around your neck 🥇, it’ll be time to refuel and enjoy! 😜 When it comes to food, Italy has you covered 🇮🇹. The province of Ragusa is full of specialties, notably Cadurra, a type of durum wheat bread 🥖, and Caciocavallo DOP Ragusano, one of Sicily’s oldest cheeses! 🧀 We recommend tasting them together 😋. With a full belly, visit the Val di Noto and its seven cities listed as UNESCO World Heritage! 🏛️ To learn a bit more about this valley’s past 🌲, you can head to Donnafugata Castle and the Trabacche cave, true witnesses to history 🤯. To finish with a bang, what could be better than gaining some altitude? 😶🌫️ Yes, us again, you’ll say—but this time by climbing mountains: the Hyblean Mountains ⛰️.
No more excuses not to run the Ragusa Marathon! 🤪
Off we go for 42 km around the hill!
After 5 kilometers in the upper city center, you’ll set off for 32 km right in the heart of nature. Countryside, villages and hamlets... a change of scenery guaranteed! 🤗 You’ll pass through Cilone and Tre Casuzze, with lanes lined with dry-stone walls 🪨, a true rural symbol of Ragusa! Don’t wear your nicest white shoes for this marathon—you might get them dirty on the paths 🐽. After your countryside loop, you’ll land in the residential neighborhoods of Monachella, Cisternazzi and Fortunago 🏘️. Once you’ve gobbled up those kilometers, you’ll cross the industrial zone and the mining area ⛏️.
When you reach km 32, you’ll have a nice surprise: downhill all the way to km 38! 📉 But be careful not to burn out—you’ve still got 4 km left and a big climb 😬. Km 38 marks your entry into the upper historic center, arriving in the little lanes and among the UNESCO-listed monuments! 🏛️Church of Santa Maria delle Scale, the Palazzo Cosentini, the Church of Purgatory or even the Palazzo Sortino-Trono... So many buildings that will make you forget the pain in your calves 🦵. One last obstacle will stand in your final kilometer: the 300 meters of brutal uphill on Via XI Febbraio 📈.
All that’ll be left is to tame a few cobblestones to shout victory on Piazza Duomo! 🥇
Off we go from Via Feliciano Rossitto for 21.097 km of pure enjoyment! 🏃♂️ After a series of climbs 📈 and descents 📉 early on along the heights of the city, the Half Marathon (Mangia's StraRagusa) takes up the last 19 kilometers of the Marathon! 🤓 You'll enjoy the 6 km of bucolic downhill 📉 before hitting the famous climb at km 38 toward the historic center, its UNESCO-listed Baroque palaces 🏛️ and the demanding 300 meters of Via XI Febbraio 📈. The legendary finish awaits you on Piazza Duomo! 🏁
New for 2027: make way for a short, dynamic format! 💥 The start is given at 10:30 a.m. in the industrial area of Ragusa. Don’t be fooled by its approachable distance: after you’ve swallowed the first fast, rolling kilometers, you’ll need to keep some in the tank to tackle the finale in the old town 🏛️. You’ll join the marathon course to take on the crossing of the upper historic center, the climb up Via XI Febbraio 📈, and the magnificent finish line set on Piazza Duomo in Ragusa Ibla! 🏁 A very generous time limit of 2 hours lets you enjoy it at your own pace ⏱️.
