Plitvice Marathon 2027

« A Croatian Marvel »

The event in a few words

Are you looking for a run that will take your breath away—and not only because of the demanding climbs, but above all because of the views? The Plitvice Marathon (Plitvički maraton) is one of the oldest, toughest, and absolutely most beautiful marathons in Europe! The route of this iconic event runs around the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park, offering runners clean air, deep green forests, and glimpses of turquoise water. The organizers have prepared a variety of distances: from the royal marathon (42.195 km), through the spectacular half marathon (21 km), to a shorter 5-kilometer race—perfect for a family start. The park lies in the heart of Croatia, and from Zagreb or the coastal Zadar you can get here by car in about 1.5 to 2 hours 🚗.

When you cross the finish line tired but absolutely thrilled, with a unique medal around your neck, it’s time for some well-deserved relaxation in this magical region. Plitvice and its surroundings are a dream spot for an extended weekend with the family or a romantic getaway for two 🥰:

Exploring Plitvice Lakes National Park: A must on the itinerary, best done the day before or the day after the race. A walk along the wooden boardwalks stretched just above the crystal-clear water, a ride on an electric boat across Lake Kozjak, and admiring the mighty Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap) is an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime 🌲.

A visit to charming Rastoke (Slunj): Often called the “Little Plitvice” — it’s a picturesque settlement famous for its historic wooden watermills, built on the many cascades and rapids of the Slunjčica River. An incredibly romantic place for a peaceful stroll 🌊.

Uncovering the secrets of the Barac Caves (Baraćeve špilje): Located just a dozen or so kilometers from the park, these caves are a great cool hideaway (perfect for hot days) and a fascinating adventure for little and big explorers who want to see extraordinary dripstone formations 🦇.

Traditional flavors of the Lika region: After burning thousands of calories on the Plitvice hills, you need to properly recharge. Be sure to try spit-roasted young lamb (janjetina), the local škripavac cheese, roasted Lika potatoes (lički krumpir), and fresh grilled brook trout 🐟.

Pack shoes with good tread, get ready for incredible views, and report to the start line of the Plitvice Marathon in Croatia!
