The dawn of a new year often means fondue ๐ซ, blankets ๐, and series in cocooning mode ๐บ. For The Corsa della Bora, it means lacing up your sneakers and getting ready for a little hair rebellion ๐โโ๏ธ.
Early January, this trail will take you around Trieste, between Slovenia ๐ธ๐ฎ and the Adriatic Sea ๐ on the Italian side. Yes, you will run along the Italian-Slovenian border on nothing but the strength of your legs๐ฆต. No need to worry about the weather: it will be just cool enough for your legs to work and for each stride to be felt โ๏ธ. The start will be from the seaside resort of Sistiana ๐ด (except for the TransKarst Ultra of 57 km, which will start from Basovizza) but there's no time to tan ๐! Very quickly, you will chain together trails, typical villages, and little surprises along the way, enough to keep your eyes and calves well occupied ๐. You'll run, laugh, enjoy, and start the year differently than on the couch ๐๏ธ. After a few kilometers, you'll realize that winter can be really nice when spent outside ๐.
The menu? It's ร la carte ๐ฝ๏ธ. As a starter, the S1 Borin (4 km) and the Family Hike & Trail (14 km) will be perfect for getting warmed up, strolling with the family, or saying โI did the S1โ without too much sweat ๐. You can even do them in hiking mode ๐ฅพ and bring your little four-legged friend ๐พ. As a main course, we offer the Half Trail (21 km) and the Borderless Trail (34 km) ๐โโ๏ธ: long enough for a real nature getaway ๐ฒ, short enough to be back in time for drinks ๐บ. And for big appetites, there will be an all-you-can-eat buffet: TransKarst Ultra (57 km), Explorer Ultra (84 km), and the holy monster, the Bora Ultra (105 km) ๐ฅต. At this stage, it's no longer sport, it's a spiritual quest ๐ง, but certified by the UTMB World Tour. On the course side, buckle up: you'll cross the Karst plateau, brush against the sea, climb ridges ๐ญ, and venture into the mythical Sentiero Rilke ๐๏ธ, a real suspended balcony. We hope you don't have vertigo ๐ฅด. In short, between sweat ๐ฆ, rocks ๐ชจ, wind ๐จ, and โwow check that out!โ ๐คฉ, you won't have time to be bored. And beware, the Bora can turn your trail into an improvised paragliding session... ๐ช Try not to fly away! ๐ซ At the finish, Portopiccolo will roll out the red carpet ๐. You'll enjoy the great atmosphere of the harbor with volunteers who make you feel like a star ๐. It's not quite the Cannes festival, but close! ๐
If you want to continue the celebrations๐ฅณ, we have some recommendations for you! Because the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, it's not just about running and going home after โ. It's a place that mixes Austro-Hungarian elegance with Italian farniente ๐. You can sip your spritz facing the gulf in bourgeois mode ๐น at Trieste, admire the Miramare castle perched over the sea ๐ฐ, or wander through its downtown alleys stopping at one of its typical cafes โ. And when hunger catches up with you, get ready for a festival of flavors: prosciutto San Daniele that melts in your mouth ๐ฅ, Friuli cheeses that will make you forget your Babybel ๐ง, and white wines from the hills that go down easy with a risotto ๐. If you want to extend the adventure, know that Ljubljana ๐ธ๐ฎ is only 1.5 hours drive ๐. So we leave it to you to choose between Italy and Slovenia for the rest ๐.
You come for the legs, you stay for the views, you leave with memories full in your head ๐.
You will start the 105 km ultra on the shores of the Adriatic ๐, passing behind Trieste. You will quickly leave the seaside to climb onto the Karst plateau, where wild and airy limestone landscapes await you ๐ฟ. The course will then lead you to the Slovenian border ๐ธ๐ฎ, towards Bagnoli della Rosandra, with long rolling but demanding sections. Around km 35, you will tackle a series of ascents and descents before reaching the border area again at km 50.
After that, you will gradually return to Italy, through the Karst, until you see the sea and the cliffs of Duino and Sistiana๐ in the distance. The final kilometers will have you skirting the coast before heading down to the finish at Sistiana, after more than 105 km and 3800 m of ascent ๐ฅ.
You will start from Sistiana, by the Adriatic ๐. Quickly, you will follow the coast towards Grignano then Opicina, with splendid views between the sea ๐ and cliffs ๐. After km 30, you will head onto the Karst plateau, wild and hilly ๐ฟ, before crossing the Slovenian border ๐ธ๐ฎ.
The second part will take you through more rolling but still challenging sections, alternating ascents and descents, before gradually returning to the sea. The final kilometers will be spectacular: you will pass through Duino, continue along the sea, and head towards the finish line in Sistiana, after 80 km of a course as demanding as it is beautiful ๐.
Ready for 1924 mD+? Here, it starts from Basovizza โฐ๏ธ, at the edge of the Karst plateau, and heads straight onto wooded trails and rolling hills ๐ฒ. The first 20 kilometers are a series of small climbs that will get the legs going ๐ช. Then, the route follows the Slovenian border ๐ธ๐ฎ, offering beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea ๐. After the halfway point, you'll gradually descend towards the coast, with a more smooth profile ๐โโ๏ธ. The finish at Sistiana ๐ will welcome you almost at sea level, after crossing typical villages, forests, and limestone cliffs ๐๏ธ.
For this route, you embark on 34 km with nearly 1100 mD+ โฐ๏ธ. The start will be at the edge of the sea ๐ before gradually climbing into the hinterland, reaching a peak around 300 m altitude at about km 23 ๐. Afterwards, you will descend towards the coast, alternating between forest trails ๐ณ, typical villages ๐๏ธ, and cliffs above the Adriatic ๐ .
This 21 km course offers approximately 600 mD+ โฐ๏ธ. The start is in Sistiana by the seaside ๐ before a gradual climb, reaching a peak around 350 m altitude ๐. The route then alternates between forest trails ๐ณ, small bumps and more rolling descents, with beautiful views of the cliffs and coast ๐ . The end brings runners back to the sea, for a dynamic finish after a varied and rhythmic course ๐ช.
You will start from Sistiana, a lovely village perched above the sea ๐. Very quickly, the route will take you to the coast and you'll follow the Sistiana port, with a superb view of the Adriatic. The path then continues around Sistiana Mare / Seslj Morje, between small roads and trails, where you can breathe the sea air ๐ and enjoy nature ๐ฟ. Around 1.5 km, there will be a slight climb โฌ๏ธ reaching nearly 65 m in altitude. The rest will be more rolling with a gradual descent โฌ๏ธ taking you back to the port โ๏ธ. You'll complete approximately 4 km between village, greenery, and seaside, and hopefully finish with a smile! ๐
