As Moses Isegawa said in the Abyssinian Chronicles: "You cannot build on sand"... certainly, but you can run on it ๐. And that's exactly what the Sahara Desert Trail Morocco proposes through its journey across several stages ๐.
More precisely, the organizers have planned a week-long adventure for you between dunes, oases, and typical villages ๐๏ธ. You will discover the interior of Morocco and the vastness of the Saharan desert. To give you an idea ๐ก, Merzouga is located in the southeast of the country, in the Drรขa-Tafilalet region and represents the last ridge before the Algerian border. The dunes, the rocky areas ๐ชจ, and the dry wadis will thus form the backdrop of the film in which you will play the lead hero ๐ฆธโโ๏ธ. Just like the namesake film Sahara ๐ฌ, you will be on the quest for your treasure: the finish line. For this purpose, the course has been marked over a distance of more than 130 km ๐, achievable in 5 days (the additional 2 days are dedicated to your departure and arrival at the site). Your only task is to follow the information to the finish, at Erfoud ๐. Each evening, a good shower and a cozy bed will await you to recover from your day's emotions. We're sparing you the uncomfortable sleep in a tent โบ๏ธ.
On average, you will travel 27 km daily. And no, it's not a hallucination, you read that correctly! You might struggle, that's likely, but you will overcome it, that's certain ๐ฅ. This stage Ultra Trail taking place in January will allow you to explore lunar very dry and desert landscapes, in an optimal end of winter โ๏ธ climate. An identical circuit in July, we can assure you it wouldn't be the same challenge ๐ฅต. The first and last stages are the most "soft" with only 22 and 20 km long (mind you, that's a Half Marathon each time ๐ ). However, you need to be in top shape on the 4th stage day. 34 km will firmly await you. You'll sweat like a camel ๐ซ. Fortunately for you, the organization reports no particular technical passages ๐ง. You can focus on progressing without worrying about how to place your feet. On the last day, finisher rewards will be handed out, and you can debrief your adventure with all participants during the closing night ๐. Quite a nice consolation after a week of intense effort ๐ฅ.
And for optimal rest, postpone your return flight by a few days and enjoy the region you are in ๐คฉ. Just a few kilometers from Merzouga, you can visit Rissani, known for its lively souks and the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif ๐. You'll find plenty of souvenirs and trinkets to satisfy all your family and friends upon your return. If you prefer a change of scenery and country, head south to Algeria ๐ฉ๐ฟ. The country, also nicknamed "The Gateway to Africa" boasts the largest area on the continent. Suffice to say, there's plenty for you to see: the Casbah of Algiers, the Tassili n'Ajjer, the Djurdjura National Park ๐ณ or the Roman ruins of Timgad; you will alternate between historic cities, natural discoveries, and ancient ruins ๐งฑ.
So, seeking solitude or shared adventure? ๐ค Whatever your intent, you'll find your happiness during this mythical Sahara trail! ๐ And don't forget your shovel and rake, they'll help you build the most beautiful sandcastles ๐ฐ.
