We hope you're ready to break the record in this race, as it is held by...Kilian Jornet, the king of ultra-trail 👑. In 2021, he conquered the Salomon Ultra Pirineu 100K in just over 10 hours ⏰. Rest assured, we don’t expect as much from you (if you finish, it's already very impressive 💪). So for now, sit comfortably and discover this legendary race in Catalonia, in the northeast of Spain 🇪🇸.
Head to Bagà, a small mountain village that becomes, for one October weekend, the base camp for lovers of elevation gain 😍. Here, the high Catalan mountains are the boss 🫡. You will have to deal with its sharp ridges, technical trails, and breathtaking landscapes 💨. Welcome to the Salomon Ultra Pirineu, one of the most iconic trails in Europe, attracting each year enthusiasts from all over the world 🌍. The crown jewel is the Salomon Ultra Pirineu 100K, a beast of 100 kilometers and 6600 mD+ 📈 that will take you through the most iconic areas of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. On this distance, there’s no room for improvisation: it’s one of the most demanding races in Spain 🥵. We advise you to start serious preparation if you want to challenge the record of 10h25 set by the living legend Kilian Jornet ⚡️. If you prefer a more "reasonable" format (everything is relative 😬) you can aim for the Marató Pirineu 42K, a mountain marathon with 2700 mD+. This route is a snapshot of the most spectacular views in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, such as Niu de l’Àliga, Penyes Altes, or Empedrats 🤩. If 42 km is still long for you but you still want a taste of the adventure, there’s the 21 km 🙌. With its 1,200 mD+, it offers breathtaking views of the Ensija Range and the Comabona ⛰️. You will also have the opportunity to observe the mythical Pedraforca, easily recognizable by its two peaks reaching for the sky 🪨. It’s indeed the most famous summit in Catalonia 📸. For adrenaline junkies, there’s the Molina Nit Pirineu KV : 5 km and 860 mD+ for the joy sorrow of your legs your eyes 👀. This (somewhat barbaric, we admit) course starts from the La Molina ski station to the Niu de l’Àliga refuge, located at 2,520 meters altitude ⬆️. At the top, you can observe the Cerdagne, Ripollès and the Berguedà 🔍 valleys. Children are not left out, as the mini-trailers can take part in the XS Pirineu 👶. In total, 6 distances are offered according to their ages, ranging from 1 to 6 km 🤓.
A piece of advice, don’t just make a quick trip for this race! ❌ You’re in the heart of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, the largest in all of Catalonia, with its nearly 70,000 hectares of forests, peaks, and trails 🥾. Your playground during the race is also a paradise for more relaxed hiking🚶. After your trail, go for a walk to the Pedraforca, the Catalans' favorite mountain (and you'll understand why 🤤). You can also explore the charming village of Gósol, where Pablo Picasso was inspired in his early days 🧑🎨. To place your bag, you don’t need to search far: in Bagà, the best option is the Zona Tipi, a tipi campsite ⛺️ located just 200 meters from the village center of the race 🏘️. You won’t be disappointed with the gastronomy either! Once settled in a local restaurant, try a suquet de peix, some mandonguilles or a fideuada, a fisherman's seafood dish 🍤.
The Salomon Ultra Pirineu 100 km race kicks off in Bagà, Spain. You'll quickly gain elevation, so brace your calves (and tie your laces 🤓). By the 8 km mark, you've already climbed 1,000 meters! Indeed, a total of 6,500 meters of elevation gain is no small feat! 💪 The first part of the course is relatively manageable, but it gets tougher from the 12 km mark with technical trails at over 2,000 meters above sea level ⬆️. You'll reach your first aid station at the Refuge Niu de l'Aliga, sitting at 2,500 meters, the peak of the race 🏃. After that, it's almost smooth sailing! 😂 Following all these exposed paths 🗻, you'll enter the forests and encounter other summits like Roca de la Moixa and Pic del Cabriol. Over 100 km, you'll be immersed in the vastness of the Parc Natural de Cadi-Moixero, so savor this unique moment! 🤩
42 km, 2,700 m of elevation gain... A true mara-trail that we love! 😍 Starting from Baga, you'll embark on a 2,000-meter ascent heading towards the first refreshment point located at an altitude of 2,500 meters ⬆️, at the Refuge Niu de l'Aliga. After conquering this challenge, the rest of the course will seem easier! 😅 You'll reach the Barraca de Moixero and then start your descent through the forest to finish back in Baga! 🏁
For this half-marathon trail, there's no climbing up to 2,500 meters altitude; here you'll stay in the forest and avoid scrambling over the ridges! 🌲 It's perfect for beginners or those looking to shave off some minutes on their time, although this trail might still challenge your calves with its 1,175m elevation gain. 😬 The first major ascent takes you to the summit of Roc dels Quatre Batlles ⛰️. You'll reach the highest point 4 km later at El Cau. You'll need strong legs for this climb. 🦵 But after that, it's all about joy and speed! 🚀 You'll follow alongside the Bastareny River all the way to the finish line in Braga. 🏁
For this Vertical Kilometer, you won't even notice the kilometers flying by! 🤪 It's just a 5 km course with 860 mD+, the perfect setup to push your limits and reach the summit as fast as possible 🚀. You'll start from Molina and make your way to the Niu de l'Aliga Refuge, perched at 2,500 meters above sea level! It's sure to challenge even the strongest of calves 😬.
