The event in a few words

“His name is Juste Leblanc.” In Garches, the hometown of Daniel Prévost, the unforgettable Lucien Cheval from Le Dîner de cons, the climb is called Juste Grise!

Today we’re taking you to Garches. Perched on the hillsides of western Paris, 12 km from Notre-Dame de Paris, this town in the Hauts-de-Seine nurtures a village vibe between state-owned forest, golf course, and streets that climb in every direction 🏡. The Hills of Garches sets up shop there in late November, when Île-de-France has swapped terraces for scarves 🧣. At that time of year, the sky is happy to borrow the color of asphalt, with an optional light shower ☁️. No need to fear the mud, though: even under the trees, the course stays on hard ground!

Half-urban, half-forest, this urban trail strings together five climbs that the organizers proudly nickname their monuments 🧗. Right from the start on rue de Suresnes, Chemin des Vignes rises up in front of you: 500 m of brutal climbing up to 15% max, visible from bottom to top 👀. The route heads toward Vaucresson before dropping into the Bois de Saint-Cucufa, where it loops around the pond 🦆. Everyone takes on the Côte Grise, preceded by Chemin de Versailles for runners on the long format 🍂. After the edge of the Saint-Cloud golf course and the crossing of Place Saint-Louis to the cheers, the most ambitious still treat themselves to the Saint-Louis climb and then rue des Quatre-Vents, the final shift before the finish at Léo-Lagrange stadium 🌬️. On the meter: 275 mD+ over 16.2 km for the “5 Hills”, 120 mD+ over 8.3 km for the “2 Hills”, all on asphalt or compacted paths, with an almost zero risk of mud.

Behind this terrain lies a race steeped in history 🕰️. For 31 editions, the 8 & 16 km of Garches brought together up to 1,600 runners on the second-to-last Sunday of November, before giving way to the Boucles de Garches, which disappeared after 2019 in the wake of the health crisis. The Hills of Garches now brings this mythical event back to life, carried by the City, the volunteers of L’Orteil en pointes (the Garches club behind the original race), and part of the team from La Domaniale in Saint-Cloud 🔄. This trio of enthusiasts knows every bump in the area by heart 🫶. Two formats complete the picture: the “2 Hills” offers a gentle introduction to the joys of the short trail, while the “5 Hills” satisfies lovers of leg-breakers looking for a real test before winter 🎯.

Once you’ve crossed the line, save a little energy for the nearby Saint-Cloud National Estate, where Paris spreads out at your feet from the Balustrade roundabout 🗼. The Pavillon de Breteuil even houses the 1889 standard meter: a chance to check that your 16.2 km really did add up to 16,200 m! 📏 On the history side, the Château de Malmaison opens the salons of Joséphine de Beauharnais 🏰. For recovery, put on “Petite Fleur” by Sidney Bechet, a Garches resident by adoption whose name the cultural center bears, just a stone’s throw from the finish 🎷.

Five climbs, 275 mD+, and just one vintage to remember: yours, etched into the clock beneath the finish line at Léo-Lagrange! 🏆

5 reasons to join this race

Five climbs, five personalities ⛰️
A brutal ramp up Chemin des Vignes at 15% 🥵, a long forest climb up Côte Grise, the fearsome rue des Quatre-Vents over 900 m: no hill looks like its neighbor. This ever-changing relief turns every section into a pacing-management exercise 📈, with 275 mD+ packed into 16 km. Climbers will find their playground; everyone else, one hell of a challenge!
A Garches legend reborn 🌅
For three decades, Garches’ 8 and 16 km races set the town buzzing in late November, with climbs etched into memory, like the famous “golf tobacco” hill 😅. Revived with the club that founded it, the race keeps its historic start line on rue de Suresnes 📍. Veterans will find their landmarks again; newcomers will write the next chapter.
An imperial forest on Paris’ doorstep 👑
Once a strolling ground for Joséphine de Beauharnais, the Bois de Saint-Cucufa spreads oaks and chestnut trees across 201 hectares 🌳, about a dozen kilometers from Notre-Dame. Its pond, a haunt for herons and amphibians, accompanies your strides, while the forest road—closed to cars on weekends—offers you a rare moment of silence in the inner suburbs 🤫.
Trail without the mud 🛣️
Asphalt or compacted paths, even under the trees: the surface stays 100% hard from start to finish. A boon in late November for road runners who want a taste of elevation without playing tightrope walker 🤸. Your road shoes will do just fine 👟, and your ankles will thank you.
Ten centuries of history in 16 km 📜
Mentioned as early as the 11th century, a land of winegrowers and then a battlefield in 1871, Garches reads like an open book 📖. The long format takes rue du 19-Janvier, a reminder of the second Battle of Buzenval ⚔️, runs alongside the Villa Stein designed by Le Corbusier, then brushes past the Sidney-Bechet cultural center just before the finish. A history lesson at race pace, with no surprise quiz at the end!

A few more words

Same start on Rue de Suresnes, same tough opener: the Chemin des Vignes and its 15% max set the tone right away 🔥. Then head for Vaucresson, followed by the Bois de Saint-Cucufa, where asphalt and forest paths alternate around the pond, like a trail run in the forest 💧. Mid-race, the Chemin de Versailles (300 m at 10% max) links up with the Côte Grise (1 km at 8% max): 1.3 km of winding climbing through the woods, rewarded with a refreshment station 🥤. Out of the woods, the route runs alongside the Saint-Cloud golf course and then the Stein Villa around the 10th km, before dropping back down to Place Saint-Louis and its supporters around the 11th km 🙌. The Saint-Louis climb (500 m at 7.6% max) immediately gets the engine going again, followed by Rue des Quatre-Vents (900 m at 8% max), which runs alongside the cemetery. One last vital push is needed! 💪 All that’s left is a false flat uphill on Grande Rue, then the turn down toward the grass of the Léo-Lagrange stadium 🏟️. In the end: 16.2 km, 275 mD+, and calves that will remember it for a long time.
