The event in a few words

What if your kilometers served a purpose beyond padding your Strava history? ❤️ The HopeXchange brings together a 5 km, a 10 km, and a kids’ race around one idea: run to raise funds, two weeks before Christmas. The event takes place in Birkirkara, the largest locality in Malta, right in the middle of the island. 🎄 In the heart of December, the Mediterranean winter stays mild: a cool morning, sunshine often in attendance, and a few showers possible—plenty to run without sweating or shivering. Ideal timing to combine effort and generosity before the year-end feasts 😋.

Start and finish meet on Salvu Psaila Street, right in the center of Birkirkara. 🏘️ The route winds between the lanes and main roads of the big town, on an urban profile with no nasty bumps that lets your legs tick over 🦵. A water station breaks up the 10 km, and distance markers guide the way until you’re back on the line ⚠️. One thing to keep in mind: traffic isn’t fully closed; marshals regulate it, so stick to the sidewalks whenever you can.

The whole spirit of the event is in its name: every bib feeds a charity pot, so you’re sweating for a good cause 🙌. Format-wise, no one is left on the bench: 5 km or 10 km, running or walking, from age 11 for the shorter one and 15 for the longer. Age categories go all the way up to 70+, and every finisher picks up their medal before the line closes 🥇. The youngest even have their own race, the Maltese stop in a series that follows them all season 🇲🇹.

Winter turns the island into a giant open-air nativity scene: presepji, those meticulous Christmas cribs, are displayed from village to village and Baroque façades light up. ✨ In Birkirkara, St. Helen’s Basilica is a showstopper, while the former railway line converted into a promenade offers you an easy cooldown 😎. To warm up, nothing beats an imbuljuta tal-Qastan, a hot drink with chestnuts and cocoa, paired with qagħaq tal-għasel, those honey rings typical of the holidays 🥰. Ten kilometers for solidarity, with a taste of Christmas thrown in: now that’s a race that warms both the legs and the heart 🔥.

You’re running for a good cause ❤️
Here, your registration goes beyond the simple pleasure of running: the funds raised go straight to a charity 🙌. So every stride carries a little more weight—in the best possible way. Enough to turn your Sunday outing into a real act of solidarity, without sacrificing any of the joy of racing.
A format made for everyone 👟
No need to be a powerhouse to line up: 5 km or 10 km, running or walking—it’s up to you to set the pace 😏. Kids even have their own race. Hard to find a valid excuse to stay on the couch on a Sunday in December 🛋️.
That pre-Christmas vibe 🎄
Running in mid-December in Malta is like treating yourself to a full-scale holiday backdrop ✨. Between the lights, the nativity scenes on display, and the mild Mediterranean winter air, the atmosphere feels like vacation. The perfect excuse to burn a few calories before the year-end feasts 🫕.
Birkirkara, the island’s lungs 🏘️
You’ll hit the pavement in Malta’s largest town, a lively maze that tourists skip far too often 🗺️. The majestic St. Helen’s Basilica watches over the center, and the old railway line, now a promenade, extends the stroll. An authentic playground, far from the usual postcard scenes 💌.
