Do you know Saint-Maurice-l'Exil? No, nobody was exiled here, promise—and yet everyone comes back every year at the end of September 😄. Nestled between the Rhône and the hillsides, this town in Isère, about twenty kilometers south of Vienne, rolls out bibs, aid-station tables, and fluorescent yellow safety vests for the Saintmauritaine, its big sporting and solidarity get-together 🎉. Meet up in the heart of Indian summer: a crisp morning that makes your calves twinge a bit at the start, a gentle sun that warms you at the finish—in short, the perfect weather for running without ending up in a puddle 🌤️.
As for the playground, the Saintmauritaine dishes up five formats, all starting from the Aqualône aquatic center 🏊. The “21 km,” the day’s centerpiece, treats you to an XXL loop: it heads north along the Rhône and circles the Saint-Alban nuclear power plant (yes, you’ll run with a view of the cooling towers—movie-set vibes 🎬) before crossing back through town, climbing toward the Parc des Varilles and escaping into the rolling countryside to the east. The “10 km” (11 km in reality on the watch—house gift 🎁) condenses the best bits: downtown, the Parc des Varilles, and a big green loop between woods and farm tracks. The “5 km” plays the bucolic card around the Étang des Blaches 🦆, while the “9 km walk” follows the trails of the Parc des Varilles and the hillsides, and the “5 km gourmet walk” turns the stroll into a roving tasting 🍽️. Asphalt, paths, a hint of family-style trail: everyone leaves with their dose of Saintmauritaine.
And above all, this race has a heart as big as that ❤️. Part of the ticketing profits goes straight to the Centre Léon Bérard in Lyon, one of France’s leading centers in the fight against cancer 🎗️. Every registration, every stride, every pinned-on bib (even crooked 🙃) helps fund research. We run for ourselves, sure—but also for those running a very different race, far tougher than ours 💪. Add to that an army of smiling volunteers and families lining the course, and you get that village-festival atmosphere the big urban machines envy 🥳.
After the finish, don’t rush off too quickly! The area is full of good excuses to stick around 😎. A trip to Vienne is a must to admire the ancient theater, one of the largest in Roman Gaul, where your aches and pains will feel tiny next to 2,000 years of History 🏛️. On the plate, the region plays at home: Dauphiné ravioles, wonderfully runny Saint-Marcellin 🧀 and, for true connoisseurs, a glass of Condrieu produced on the opposite hillsides 🍷. Carbs are important for recovery—everyone knows that (but always in moderation! ⚠️).
So, ready to run for a purpose? At the Saintmauritaine, even your bib does a good deed 😉.
A word from the organizer:
"Every year, the Saintmauritaine is much more than a race. It’s a moment when an entire community comes together—runners, volunteers, families—to share a common goal: running for a good cause. This edition is no exception. Part of the profits generated by ticketing will be donated to the Centre Léon Bérard in Lyon, in the fight against cancer. Every registration, every kilometer covered, every bib worn therefore has real meaning beyond athletic performance. We know that behind every runner there is preparation, sacrifices, sometimes doubts. And that is precisely what makes this race beautiful: we don’t run only for ourselves, we also run for others. Thank you all for showing up, thank you to the volunteers who make this event possible, and thank you to our partners who place their trust in us each year. We’ll see you on September 27 for a new edition, even more united in solidarity."
The pièce de résistance, reserved for ages 18 and up 🔥. This full-scale half sets off to explore the north of the town alongside the Rhône, with a stretch as unlikely as it is unforgettable around the Saint-Alban nuclear power plant ⚛️. How many half marathons can boast such scenery? Back through the town center, a detour via the Varilles area, then a big loop through the rolling eastern countryside in the footsteps of the 10 km, before a final hook by the Blaches pond 🦆. A complete course, between smooth riverside paths, lively streets, and trails that make your thighs work a bit: save some in the tank—the last section has to be earned 💪.
The star format for regular runners ⭐, with a kilometer bonus offered by the organizers 😄. After an urban start through the streets of Saint-Maurice-l'Exil, the course hits the Parc des Varilles via a fun little switchback section, then rolls out into a big nature loop east of the village: farm tracks, wooded paths, and fast sections where you can kick on 💨. The final drop brings you back into town for one last kilometer to empty the batteries 🔋. A varied profile, between road and trails, that spices up your time without ruining it.
Starting from the Aqualône watersports center for a nature loop south of the village 🌾. The route heads down between fields and paths to the Blaches lake, which you'll circle along the water's edge 🦆, before gently climbing back up toward the finish. Flat profile, countryside vibe, zero traps: the perfect distance to get started from age 16 or to bring along a reluctant friend who "will see" 😏.
The epicureans’ favorite format 😋: a 5 km stroll punctuated by tasting breaks that turn the outing into a traveling picnic 🧺. Flat route, zero difficulty, a relaxed vibe guaranteed. Accessible from age 6, perfect for getting the whole family into the joys of an active Sunday 👶.
A real hike on the doorstep of the village 🚶. From Aqualône, the route crosses the town center then climbs toward the Parc des Varilles and its shaded paths 🌳, before unfolding into a large loop through the eastern countryside, between woods, orchards, and sunken lanes. A few gentle inclines to warm up your calves, viewpoints over the Rhône Valley, and a return via the center. From age 6, at your own pace, optional podcast 🎧.
