What ? You, who love getting out into the countryside, running in the fresh air, you don’t know the Trail des 6 Burons in the Cantal ? We need to fix that right away ! Hop in the car Simone and head to Riom-ès-Montagnes in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region 🚗 in the month of August. But by the way, what’s a Buron? Well, it’s a stone building typical of the Monts du Cantal. Covered with slate, you’ll find it in high-altitude pastures 🛖.
Alright, now that you’ve had your little general knowledge minute, let’s go 🙌. We’re offering four distances : 17 km, 30 km and 79 km that you can do solo or as a relay. If you’re a speed fan, there are also MTB races. If, on the contrary, you prefer to take your time, a hiking route is also organized. But in any case, you absolutely have to come discover the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park and the Monts du Cantal 🌋. The "Trail des 6 Burons" is 79 km and 2,800 mD+ with a mandatory passage by the mythical Puy Mary. Amateur, beginner—are you jealous that you can’t enjoy all that too? Don’t panic, we thought of you as well! It’s beautiful: the 79 km trail as a relay! 🤩 We’ll explain: the course is divided into seven segments that you can do in a team of two or three. You choose the distance you want to cover, between 10 and 60 km, and you can decide whether you run once or several times. For example, you can take turns every 20 km, or you can say “ I’m just doing 10 km ” and let your teammates do the rest. Isn’t that great? 😬 If this event seems reserved only for burons brutish D+ addicts, we also have the "Trail de la Gentiane". This 30 km route with 1,000 mD+ is (almost) gentler and starts in the streets of Riom before climbing toward Lac de Roussillou 💦. For those who like it short and intense, there’s the "Trail du Viaduc" distance of 17 km and 500 mD+: panoramic views, the Château d’Apchon on one side, the Massif du Sancy on the other ⛰️. And that’s not all! Kids will get races suited to their age, to give them a taste for trail running from their very first steps 😇.
After all that, the discovery continues with a meal featuring Cantal and other cheeses. They’re enjoyed in every possible way, from the starter all the way to… dessert! Yes, absolutely! 🧀
You’re not going to get stuck in a rut, so come with us and let’s go run to see the burons ! 🏃➡️
The must-do passage of the Trail of the 6 Burons is the legendary Puy Mary, and not just any way: via the Brèche de Rolland, a legendary climb 🔥. Start given at Place du Coudert, before heading into the woods of Roussillou, then towards "La Rodde" for a first aid station 🤤. At km 14, second aid station at La Bastide. There, it’s either you hand over the relay (and you bless your teammate), or you keep going in warrior mode to tackle THE climb: a wall up to the Limon plateau, then the Puy de Niermont, then more downhill, then more uphill 🥵. You then pass the Col de Serre, the cross-country ski trails, and the Brèche de Rolland to reach the magical Puy Mary ridge. Then you descend towards la Gayelle via the Luchard, you go by la Font Sainte, you cross Saint-Hippolyte and Apchon, you take your selfie in front of the castle ruins and you head back to Riom via the Taphanel peat bog.
If you prefer to ride, we’re offering you this mountain bike ride! 🚵 . The route goes through the woods around Riom with 2 possible distances.
The distances for 2026 haven’t been revealed yet!
The "Trail of the Gentian" starts gently in the streets of Riom before climbing toward Lake Roussillou, the mysterious woods, La Rodde, Terrou and Pouzol 🌳. You go through Apchon, then back to Riom along Lake des Bondes 💦.
The distances for 2026 have not been revealed yet!
For those who love walking, a hike of 20 km is offered 🚶. The departure will be from Monument Square in Riom-ès-Montagnes to reach the Village of Lugarde 🏡. After a grand arrival, you will be entitled to a meal prepared by the Association of Lugarde Parents of Students. No return is planned, as it will be done by tourist train! 🚞 Please note that the departure of the Gentiane Express will be at exactly 3:00 p.m. 🕒.
This trail is short, but no less technical 👀. Even though it’s only 17 km, this route is demanding. The course takes you through the Roussillou woods, heading toward la Rodde. There, you’ll climb a technical path...and you’ll have a surprise at the end 🤫. You then continue to the Lac des Bondes, the ruins of the Château d’Apchon, with views over the Sancy massif 😍. You then head back down toward Riom 💪.
