What? You who love to roam the countryside, run in the fresh air, don't know the Trail of the 6 Burons in the Cantal? You need to fix that immediately! Off to Simone to Riom-ès-Montagnes in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region 🚗 in the month of August. But by the way, what's a Buron? Well, it's a stone building typical of the mountains of Cantal. Covered in slate, it's found in pastures exploited at altitude 🛖.
Well, now that you've had your general culture minute, we can go 🙌. We're offering you four distances: 16 km, 29 km, and 79 km that you can do solo or in relay. If you're a fan of speed, there are also MTB races. If, on the contrary, you prefer taking your time, hiking trails are also organized. But in any case, you absolutely must come discover the Auvergne Volcanic Regional Nature Park and the mountains of Cantal 🌋. The "Trail of the 6 Burons" is 79 km and 2,800 mD+ with a mandatory passage through the mythical Puy Mary. Amateur, beginner, green with envy because you can't enjoy all this too? Don't panic, we've thought of you too! It's brand new, it's the 79 km trail in relay! 🤩 Let us explain: the course is divided into seven segments that you can do in two or three. You choose the distance you want to cover, between 10 and 60 km, and you can decide whether you run once or multiple times. For example, you can take turns every 20 km or you can say "I'll just do 10 km" and let your comrades do the rest. Isn't that great? 😬 If it seems this event is only for Burrons addicted to D+, we also have the "Trail de la Gentiane". This 29 km and 820 mD+ route is (almost) gentler and starts in the streets of Riom before climbing towards the Lake of Roussillou 💦. For those who like short and intense, there's the royal "François XVI" distance of 16 km and 400 mD+: panoramic view, Château d’Apchon on one side, Massif du Sancy on the other ⛰️. And that's not all! Children will have races adapted to their age, introducing them to trail running from their first steps 😇.
After all that, the discovery continues with a meal featuring cantal and other cheeses. They can be enjoyed in many ways, from starters to... dessert! Yes, absolutely! 🧀
You won't be gathered onto the couch, so come with us and let's run to see the burons! 🏃➡️
The mandatory passage of the Trail of the 6 Burons is the legendary Puy Mary, and not just any way: by the Brèche de Rolland, a legendary climb 🔥. The start is given at Place du Coudert, before heading into the woods of Roussillou, then towards "La Rodde" for the first refreshment stop 🤤. At km 14, the second refreshment stop is at La Bastide. There, either you pass the baton (and bless your teammate), or you continue in warrior mode to tackle THE climb: a wall towards the plateau of Limon, then the Puy de Niermont, then more descent, then more climbing 🥵. You then pass through the Col de Serre, the cross-country ski trails, and the Brèche de Rolland to reach the magical ridge Puy Mary. Then, you descend towards La Gayelle via Luchard, pass by La Font Sainte, cross Saint-Hippolyte and Apchon, take your selfie in front of the castle ruins and return to Riom via the Taphanel peat bog.
It's still more fun with two, right? 🙃 Plus, you can organize the relay segments as you like with your teammate 🙌.
If you prefer to ride, we offer you this mountain bike tour! 🚵. The route goes through the woods around Riom with 2 possible distances. You can choose at km 20: either return to Riom for 26 km or continue on a relatively smooth trail to reach 45 km 🤯. A somewhat technical first third of the route awaits you to reach a breathtaking view of Puy Mary from the village of Chassagny. Then you will pass by the foot of the Barajol viaduct and a leisurely return to Lake Roussillou or a descent to the Coindre dam to then reach Lake Mont de Bélier and a magnificent view of the massif of Sancy 🏔️.
The "Trail of the Gentian" starts gently in the streets of Riom before climbing towards the lake of Roussillou, the mysterious woods, La Rodde, the Terrou and Pouzol 🌳. You pass through Apchon, and return to Riom along the lake of Bondes 💦.
This route covers the first 26 kilometers of the mountain bike tour of 45 km 🚵.
This trail is short, but no less technical 👀. Even though it's only 16 km, this course is demanding. The route takes you through the Roussillou woods towards la Rodde. There, you'll climb a technical path...and you'll have a surprise at the end 🤫. You continue to the lac des Bondes, the ruins of the Apchon Castle, with a view of the Sancy massif 😍. You then descend towards Riom 💪.
