The event in a few words

How better to kick off the trail season than by starting it with one of the most beautiful in the world? 🌍 The Transgrancanaria is THE trail that’s going to test your endurance from the start all the way to the finish line, plunging you into a simply magnificent setting 🤩. Running on the ground of Gran Canaria, the routes pass through forests, villages, volcanic rocks… 🌋 In short, unforgettable routes from start to finish. Created in 2003, this race is one of the oldest ultra-trails on the world calendar! 📆 Its prestige is so great that as soon as the Ultra Trail World Tour was created in 2013, it was included straight away! But it doesn’t stop there: it’s also part of the World Trail Major group 💫. This slightly complex term has, since 2024, brought together around ten iconic trails 🌞. And of course, its reputation pays off, because by taking part, ITRA points are validated depending on the route! ➕ The meeting point is therefore at the start of the season, in March, to enjoy ideal running weather, with temperatures between 16° and 21° 😌.

Before presenting the race, let us highlight the exceptional race setting of this event 💐. Gran Canaria is part of the Canary Islands (which doesn’t mean you’ll run into ducks everywhere 🤣); they form a Spanish archipelago made up of volcanic territories 🇪🇸. So we’d rather warn you: volcanic activity is still a thing… 🫠 But the last one was in 2021, after 10 years of waiting before acting up! 😮‍💨 To place them geographically, these islands are located in the northern Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Morocco and the Sahara! 🏜️ Okay, maybe that’s a bit hard to picture, but we promise they’re easy to spot on the map 🔎. This group is made up of a total of 7 volcanic islands, and Gran Canaria is the 3rd largest! 📏 With its 1,560 km2, it has a spring-like climate all year round 🌞. In terms of scenery, its nickname is the “miniature continent”, which is pretty self-explanatory: there are forests, there are valleys, there are dunes, there are, of course, volcanoes, and there are villages too… 🏞️ In short, you get every kind of panorama!

After all these descriptions, it might be time to look at the main subject: the trail 🏃‍♂️. Here, the list makes it easy to find the perfect distance 😌. Let’s dive right in with the “Classic ”, to cross the island from north to south over 125 km, adding up 6,674 mD+ 📈. It’s not the easiest, but as they say, “ a goal, a dream ” 💭. We’ll gradually come down in distance with the second one, the “ Advanced ”. Here it’s 81 km with 4,314 mD+, passing through all kinds of scenery 🤩. Or you can take the opportunity to do the “ Marathon ”—well, a bit more, since it’s 46 km and 1,784 mD+… But it’s worth it: you’ll reach the highest point of the island ⛰️. Enough to enjoy a breathtaking view! If there’s a marathon, there’s a half-marathon, so they offer the “ Half ”: 22.9 km and 1,817 mD+, a climb that’s worth it. To start trail running with a more accessible distance, the “ Promo ” is i-de-al. 12 km and 829 mD+—yes it’s still demanding, but the setting makes you forgive everything 💫. And so that everyone can take part in the event, the “ Short ” lets you run 5 km with 264 mD+, whatever the runner’s age! 🐥 The list is already pretty long, but there are two more very interesting distances. First, the “ Family Trail ”: pretty self-explanatory, it’s on the 5 km course but in family mode, so everyone can be together 🫂. And finally, we wrap up all these options with a very challenging concept: the “ KV El Gigante ”. It’s simple: 5.5 km to run, up the face of the Tamadaba massif, with 1,090 mD+. Not so simple after all to do a vertical kilometer… ⬆️

You can see there’s no time to be bored at the event, but not after the race either 😄. Paradise islands are still the dream. And here, in addition to running, you can extend the moment and enjoy the Canarian sunshine ☀️. It’s the time to forget hotel buffets for a moment and go explore the Maspalomas Dunes at sunset 🌅, or visit the village of Artenara (also the highest on the island 👀), with its world-unique cave houses. If you’re legs are gone, a family outing to the playa Las de Maspalomas is a must. And we can’t forget what’s on the plate: you shouldn’t leave without tasting everything, but above all without trying papas arrugás with their mojo sauce, the ultimate local fuel 🥔.

Sweating at the Transgrancanaria? There are worse situations 😅.
