We’ll meet you in Sion, in the heart of the canton of Valais in Switzerland, for a weekend that turns the Rhône Valley into a giant arena at the end of August 🤪. Here, the Valais Triathlon Festival doesn’t do things by halves ☝️. Picture a weekend where 12 events follow one another, offering a full menu from the triathlon Full for the "Iron"(man) at heart all the way to the Gégé Splash Race 🦆 for those who prefer inflatable rings to stopwatches 😂. Simple: if triathlon were an action movie, Sion would be the main set—somewhere between James Bond for the prestige and Rocky for the raw effort 🇨🇭.
No shortage of race options! 🧐 In the sport category, you’ll have: the Full (3.8 km swim 🏊 / 180 km bike and 800 mD+ / 42.195 km run), the Half (1.9 km swim / 90 km bike / 21.1 km run), the Olympic (1.5 km swim / 40 km bike / 10 km run) and the Short (500 m swim / 20 km bike 🚲 / 5 km run). For those who’d rather take the Valais Triathlon Festival as a bit of fun, there’s also the fun category with : the Discovery (250 m swim / 10 km bike / 2,500 m run) and the Gégé Splash Race over 1 km (a hybrid format mixing swimming, paddleboarding and an inflatable ring 🛟). There will even be the Stand Up Paddle Race, in collaboration with SUPspirit Sion, open from age 12 in two formats: "Easy Race" of 2 km (1 lap) or "Hero Race" 8 km (4 laps). And to truly delight everyone, children will have 5 races to have a blast and a parent-child relay for families who want to share a sporting moment 🤗.
The bike course? 🤔 It’s the "judge of the peace" of your weekend 🥸. Starting from Sion, you’ll forget flat, monotonous roads 😬. You’ll wind between the terraced vineyards among the highest in Europe 🍇, before taking on mountain passes that will make you regret every raclette from last winter 😂. You’ll ride through wild Switzerland, with a view of the castles of Valère and Tourbillon 🏰 overlooking the town. You’ll almost forget your calves are burning 🥵. The swim takes place in the crystal-clear waters of the Domaine des Îles 🏝️, between the mountains 🏔️, while the run lets you smooth out your pace on the valley floor 🏃♂️, along the banks of the Rhône, cheered on by one of the most festive crowds 🥳.
The atmosphere at the Valais Triathlon Festival is like the city itself: authentic and incredibly welcoming 🥰. We’re not talking about a village fair here, but a meticulously organized event that draws hundreds of enthusiasts to the foot of the Alps 📍. The race’s DNA is this unique blend of performance and "festival" spirit, where every finisher is celebrated, from first to last 🥇. Don’t be surprised if the sound of cowbells 🐮 replaces techno music on the course: it’s the local folklore pushing you toward the summits! 😜
For the post-race, Sion is an endless playground 😏. You can go relax in the region’s thermal baths 💦 or take the family to admire the Grande Dixence Dam 🏞️, a concrete wall taller than the Eiffel Tower that’s seriously impressive 🪨. And for a solid recovery, we suggest ditching the diet for two minutes: a plate of Valais dried meat 🍽️ paired with a glass of local Fendant in Sion’s old streets—that’s the official recovery protocol 🍷.
Warning: alcohol should be consumed in moderation ⚠️
