5K Races in the Canton of Zurich

The 5K in the canton of Zurich appeals to those who want a taste of competition without devoting weeks to preparation 🏃. It's a short distance, achievable in under 30 minutes for many beginners, yet it leaves room for real speed work for more experienced runners. The flat roads around Lake Zurich are well suited to it, with little elevation gain and even surfaces.

A 5K can be prepared in four to six weeks with three runs per week, alternating easy jogging, short interval sessions and a longer run 🌼. The atmosphere is generally relaxed, and families often find activities for children. The calendar of 5K races in the canton is smaller than that of the longer distances, but several events include it in their programme alongside the marathon. Organisers often plan staggered starts and routes suitable for strollers, a real plus for parents.

According to the Finishers calendar, the Winterthur Marathon includes a 5K in its programme on May 23, 2027 in Winterthur, alongside the 10K, the half marathon and the marathon 🌳. Widening the radius, the Sempacherseelauf offers a 5K around Lake Sempach, in the canton of Lucerne, on May 1, 2027. The Hallwilerseelauf follows on October 9, 2027, in Seengen, on the shores of Lake Hallwil.

Zurich is quickly discovered on foot: in 5K, you can run along the lake, cross the neighbouring city of Winterthur or climb the first slopes of the Uetliberg 🌄. After the finish line, nothing beats a coffee on the quays to savour your performance. Choose an event with staggered starts for a first experience, then gradually increase the distance. The running races in Zurich will then offer you longer formats.
