The canton of Zurich has no major peaks, but its wooded ridges offer mountain races within reach by train. Engelberg and the Napf, nearby, round out the playground.
Mountain running in the canton of Zurich plays out on a modest scale, with summits flirting with 1,300 m and terrain that surprises more than a few visitors 🌄. The Tössbergland massif lines up wooded ridges, alpine pastures and winding slopes where the climbs prove steep and steady. The Uetliberg, right next to the city, serves as an ideal testing ground to try out your legs before aiming higher.
The mountain trails here are well marked and connected to the transport network, which makes it easy to get home after a big outing. Winter regularly covers the ridges with snow, which makes the climbs more technical and the descents far more demanding ❄️. In spring, the meadows bloom and the mud gradually disappears, making way for long sunny ridges that overlook the Swiss plateau and, on a clear day, offer views all the way to the Alps.
The Finishers calendar does not currently list any mountain races in the canton of Zurich, but the surrounding area is full of events. The RunThrough Trails Engelberg takes place on August 20, 2027 at the foot of the Titlis, in the Engelberg valley, in Obwalden. The Napf-Marathon, on October 10, 2027, starts from Trubschachen, in the Bernese Emmental, in the heart of the Napf region 🥾.
Zurich is also a city of spring festivals like the Sechseläuten, where a snowman stuffed with firecrackers is burned on the square to drive away winter 🎆. After the mountain, nothing beats heading back by the lake to enjoy the view. Choose your race according to your level: an Oberland ridge to get started, a long format in Engelberg to put yourself to the test. Running races in Zurich round out the offering if you want to alternate with road running.
