Triathlon calendar in Graubünden: short and long formats

Graubünden, triathlon facing the peaks

The Engadine lakes and Alpine roads inspire triathletes, who find their events among the neighbors: Ironman 70.3 Switzerland in Rapperswil-Jona and Swissman Xtreme in Ascona, both in June.

Swimming, cycling, running: Graubünden has what it takes to tick all three boxes, in a setting few regions can match 🏊. Between the lakes of Sils, Silvaplana and St. Moritz, the Albula and Julier passes and the trails of the Engadine, a triathlon in Graubünden often begins with altitude training. The setting calls for patience and preparation, with altitude training camps that are very popular among endurance athletes.

The terrain has its own particularities. The Engadine lakes, located at over 1,700 m, stay cool even in the height of summer: a wetsuit is a must, and swimmers get used to it quickly. On the bike, the passes follow one after another and even the shortest ride becomes a climber's test 🚴. The run, meanwhile, benefits from long, flat trails near the lakes. The season runs from June to September, with icy mornings and hot days, rarely boring.

The neighboring triathlon calendar offers two major events in June. The Ironman 70.3 Switzerland sets up in Rapperswil-Jona, in the canton of St. Gallen. In Ticino, the Swissman Xtreme Triathlon starts from the shores of Lake Maggiore in Ascona, for an extreme adventure 🌴. In the canton, the Ötillö Swimrun Engadin in Silvaplana, in July, offers a similar format, combining swimming and running on the shores of the Engadine. The triathlons in Switzerland offer other lakes and other routes.

In St. Moritz, the Cresta Run goes down an ice channel at over 100 km/h, head first: triathletes will count themselves lucky to stay on their bikes 😄. After the finish line, nothing beats a good mountain meal to recover 🥘. Everyone chooses their format according to their level, from the first sprint triathlon to the big long-distance races. Graubünden offers an ideal terrain to build your season, from the outdoor pool to long rides on the mountain pass roads.
