Graubünden, long-haul ultras

Savognin, Samedan, Davos or Lenzerheide: Graubünden hosts demanding ultra-trails, from June to August, through high-altitude valleys, passes and lakes, for runners who love wide open spaces.

Going beyond 80 km in Graubünden means crossing several worlds in a single race: the greenery of the Albula, the mirror lakes of the Engadine, the ridges of Davos 🏔️. Switzerland's largest canton is a natural fit for ultra-trail running in Graubünden, where you cross entire valleys without ever seeing the same view twice.

The terrain demands humility. The passes exceed 2,500 m, summer thunderstorms strike quickly in the afternoon ⚡ and the temperature drops sharply at night. The ideal window runs from late June to early September. The Engadine trails, often wide and fast near the lakes, give way to more technical sections at altitude, which forces you to manage your energy on several fronts. It's best to have tested your gear, your refueling and your legs on long outings before race day. The headlamp almost always accompanies the first kilometers or the last ones 🌙.

The Graubünden ultra-trail calendar offers several big names. June opens with the Swiss Irontrail, which starts from Savognin with long formats. In July, the Engadin Ultra Trail in Samedan and the Davos X-Trails take over, with profiles tailored for lovers of high altitude. In August, the Transalpine Run starts from Lenzerheide for a stage-by-stage adventure across the Alps. For a change of scenery, the ultra-trails in the canton of Bern offer another face of the Alps.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted the mountains of Davos for a long time, captivated by a unique light 🎨. At three in the morning under a headlamp, ultra-trail runners take on a view that is just about as expressionist 😄. After the effort, a plate of pizokel, the local pasta, restores a wobbly morale 🍝. From a first ultra to the goal of an entire season, everyone chooses their race according to their level and experience. The ultra-trails in Switzerland offer other terrain to train on.
