Trails in Graubünden

The largest canton in Switzerland, Graubünden boasts more than 150 valleys, hundreds of lakes and peaks that rise above 4,000 m 🏔️. In other words, a trail run in Graubünden should be planned like a journey: just pick your valley, then pack a headlamp, because the region loves long outings.

The terrain changes with the rhythm of the valleys. The Engadine offers its larches and turquoise lakes, the Piz Bernina raises its scree slopes above Pontresina, and the alpine pastures of Davos unfold long ridges. Three languages share the canton, German, Romansh and Italian 🗣️, and trail names reflect the same diversity. The season runs from June to September, when the sun has dried out the paths, before the larches turn gold. Mountain huts serve steaming soups that are worth all the energy gels in the world.

The Graubünden trail calendar opens in June with the Swiss Irontrail in Savognin and the Bernina Ultraks in Pontresina. July follows with the Engadin Ultra Trail in Samedan, the Davos X-Trails and the Rheinquelle-Trail in Tujetsch, near the sources of the Rhine. In August, the Madrisa Trail in Klosters, the Sanbe trail in Mesocco and the Transalpine Run starting from Lenzerheide close out the season 🌲. To compare terrains, the trails in Switzerland offer a wide choice.

The canton also has its heroes. Dario Cologna, born in the Val Müstair, won four Olympic titles in cross-country skiing, a reminder that endurance runs in local veins 😄. After the effort, Graubünden air-dried meat, cured in the mountain air, will revive the troops 🥩.
