Race timing in Besançon

It’s the question we all ask ourselves: how long does each participant take to complete their race? 🤔 That’s the whole purpose of timing, which measures the time from start to finish to establish the rankings. Long done with a handheld stopwatch, it’s now electronic ⏱️. Chips attached to the bib, the shoe, or the bike are automatically detected on the ground as athletes pass. In practical terms, this system relies on timing mats equipped with RFID antennas, laid on the ground on the start line, finish line, and intermediate checkpoints: each chip emits a unique frequency captured to the nearest thousandth of a second, guaranteeing flawless ranking accuracy. It’s also thanks to this that we distinguish official time (calculated from the start signal) from real time, which only starts when you cross the line—very handy when you’re starting at the back of the pack!

So, concretely, what does that look like?
