Race timing in Bordeaux

This is the question we all ask ourselves: how long does each participant take to complete their race? 🤔 That’s what timing is all about: measuring the time from start to finish to establish the rankings. Long done with a handheld stopwatch, it is now electronic ⏱️. Chips attached to the bib, the shoe, or the bike are automatically detected on the ground as they pass. In concrete terms, this system relies on timing mats equipped with RFID antennas, laid on the ground on the start line, the finish line, and at intermediate checkpoints: each chip emits a unique frequency captured to the nearest thousandth of a second, ensuring flawless accuracy in the rankings. It’s also thanks to it that we distinguish official time (calculated from the start signal) from real time, which only starts when you cross the line—very handy when you start at the back of the pack!

Practically speaking, what does that look like?
