Race timing in Nancy

It’s the question we all ask ourselves: how long does each participant take to complete their race? 🤔 That’s the whole point of timing—measuring the time from start to finish to produce the rankings. Long done by hand with a stopwatch, it’s now electronic ⏱️. Chips attached to the bib, the shoe, or the bike are automatically detected on the ground as participants pass. In practice, this system relies on timing mats equipped with RFID antennas, laid on the ground at the start line, finish line, and intermediate checkpoints: each chip emits a unique frequency captured down to the thousandth of a second, ensuring rankings with impeccable accuracy. It’s also thanks to this system that we distinguish official time (calculated from the start signal) from real time, which only starts when you cross the line—very handy when you start at the back of the pack!

In practical terms, what does that look like?
