Houilles lives up to its name of coal, and yet not a single lump of coal has ever slept beneath its sidewalks ⛏️ . 

Linguists lean instead toward an old root referring to a modest rise, or even the sheep of a medieval flock. In late December, this urban village nestled in the Yvelines in Île-de-France 🇫🇷, just 8 km west of Paris and at the edge of the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest, swaps its usual calm for a tide of bibs. You pull on gloves and a windbreaker before the big start: between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the Paris-region thermometer rarely climbs above 7°C, and winter drizzle loves to crash the party without ever being invited ☔. Still, nothing beats it for holding a strong pace without sweating buckets—the weather takes care of that all by itself.

Once you’ve crossed the start corral, you chew through urban loops drawn with ruler-straight precision around the downtown center, the kingdom of flat where no bump comes to break your momentum 🏃 . The course, redesigned for this edition ✏️, strings together endless straightaways and sharp turns that force you to keep your footwork snappy so you don’t lose time. You slalom past late-December streetlights already switched on, as if the city were rolling out its own glowing carpet ahead of schedule 💡, on a fast surface that offers no excuse for a missed time ⏱️. On the "10 km", barely 32m D+ come to tickle the body, and on the "5 km", 16m D+ are hardly enough to wake up the calves 🎯 , enough to make you doubt the word "elevation" even exists in the local dictionary 📖. This same "10 km" course features two separate starts: the "Popular" for atmosphere and fun 🎉, then the "Race of the Aces", reserved for runners under 37 minutes (men) or 44 minutes (women), with a field that brushes the international elite 🔥 . Everyone else can happily stick with the “Popular,” and promise—no one asks to see your time at the entrance 😅. A course built for smashing a personal record 🏆, not for suffering in the mountains ⛰️.

Created in 1972 by Alexandre Joly 📅, former mayor of the city and local heavyweight in pyrotechnics 🧨, the Houilles Corrida is directly inspired by the legendary Saint Silvester Corrida held in São Paulo 🇧🇷. The second road corrida created in France, it long carried a World Athletics label and has seen big names come through capable of dipping under 27:30 for 10 km 🏃, more than enough to put your last personal best into perspective 😅 . Enough to place Houilles very high on the road racing 🛣️ calendar. The elite field is for the "Race of the Aces," while the "Popular" makes room for costumes and families ready to battle it out without pressure, cheered on by a crowd packed behind the barriers 📣.

The highlight of the show also awaits those who stick it out until the end of the evening: a fireworks display lights up the sky above Parc Charles de Gaulle in the late afternoon, a perfect nod to the profession of its founder: the pyrotechnic loop is complete 🎆 . Enough to extend the celebration before diving into New Year’s Eve preparations, between a Yule log still to finish (the Christmas one, not the one fueling the fireworks 😂) and one last steaming mulled wine to sip at the village stalls🍷. The proximity of La Défense and Paris also makes it easy to turn the weekend into a Paris getaway, between a walk in the forest and last-minute shopping before Christmas—the kind you always put off until the very end 🛍️.
