The event in a few words

Tango and asado, we’ll save those for Buenos Aires 😉. 1,100 km west of the capital, San Juan pins its competitors at the foot of the Andes precordillera, in a bare-rock setting worthy of the film Mad Max 🎬. Every autumn, in April, the province hosts the IRONMAN 70.3 San Juan in the Half Ironman format: 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21.1 km of running, for 113 km with no way out 🥵. No shortened distance to reassure yourself—only the main event is on the menu 📋. In just a few seasons, the race has risen among South America’s benchmark triathlons 🌍.

San Juan lives up to its nickname as the “oasis city” 🏜. Sitting at 650 m of altitude in the Tulum Valley, it lines up plane-tree-lined avenues and irrigation canals right in the middle of an ocean of ochre cerros and dry rock. The triathlete shifts from a near-lunar desert to the green of a city built on tamed water 🌳. This landscape gives the race a signature that few triathlons can claim. The altitude is moderate, the air dry and the light harsh. In the lakes of western Argentina, the swim will be better than along the usual seafronts 😍.

The alarm goes off at dawn, because the starting cannon generally fires in the morning, from the jetty at Punta Negra ☀️. Act one: 1.9 km of open-water swimming, this loop is in the middle of a ring of mountains arid! Ahhh, taking a dip right in the desert—you had to dare 😄. Getting out of the water unlocks 90 km of downhill cycling from the dam, through Ullúm and Rivadavia. What follows gives you a nice descent and saves the bill for the half marathon 😏. The route skirts the wildlife park, drops down the ramp of the Dique Ullúm, crosses Marquesado before heading for the big avenues 🛣️. Careful, it’s not over—there’s still the run: 21.1 km, fairly flat and fast, on a loop to be done three times, in downtown San Juan. From the mineral dam to lively asphalt, the course changes face dramatically in less than half a day 🤩.

One thing is certain: its reputation is already well established—at IRONMAN 70.3 San Juan, more than 9 out of 10 athletes leave delighted and are already planning to come back 😲. That satisfaction rate speaks volumes about the race 😎. The swim surely has a lot to do with it: 1.9 km in a crystal-clear, calm freshwater venue, far from the salty taste and jellyfish of coastal stops 🏊. Sculpted mountains and shimmering lakes roll by throughout the three stages of this race 🤩. Enough to forget that your thighs and calves are starting to burn... With that, it’s hard to find a more exotic postcard on the circuit 🏔.

The other strength of San Juan lies in its people 🙌. Warm and enthusiastic, locals take over the race like a festival and push runners from the first to the last stride 🏃‍♀️. The event is also experienced as a tribe: while you string together swimming, cycling and running, your support crew never runs out of things to do in the region, between vineyards, walks and generous tables 🧉. Popular fervor combined with a family spirit—those are the two ingredients that turn this simple triathlon into a getaway of its own 🥳.

Once you cross the line, the province plays its card 🍽. Golden empanadas, grilled meats over embers and fragrant olive oils from local groves delight hungry stomachs 🤤. When it comes to traditions, San Juan lives to the rhythm of the sun—to the point of dedicating its Fiesta Nacional del Sol to it every summer! With its giant parade, it pays tribute to the star that beats down almost all year 🌞. To unwind after the effort, there’s nothing better than heading to the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, the “Valle de la Luna.” This time, no need to shoot for the moon—here, you can visit it on foot 🦖.

From the lunar desert to the canals and irrigated crops of the “oasis city” of San Juan, this event pulls off a bet that few destinations dare to try—especially if you come here to do the IronMan 70.3 🏔.
