The event in a few words

When the mountain looks you in the eyes (and has a little laugh)! 😬

Somewhere in the Pyrenees, between the Aude, Ariège and the Pyrénées-Orientales, there’s a race that wasn’t invented for reasonable people 😅. It’s called the Altriman, it’s now in its 18th edition, and it’s based on a simple principle: take a classic triathlon, and drop it right in the middle of the mountains, at high altitude, with 5,000 meters of elevation gain on the bike alone? Great idea, isn’t it? 🤔

It all starts at 5:30 a.m. on the shore of Lake Matemale, a lake nestled at 1,600 meters above sea level in the Capcir 🏞️, where the water is cool, the air is pure, and the clouds are nowhere to be seen ☀️. Full competitors dive in for 3,800 meters in mass start. That’s triathlon DNA: a slightly crazy energy that pushes perfectly normal people to swim in the dark before sunrise 🌅. Then comes the bike. And here, watch out: 193 km with nearly 5,000 meters of elevation gain across three departments. Competitors cross mountain passes, valleys, sleepy villages, and panoramas that would make postcards feel self-conscious 🖼️. To give you an idea: 5,000 mD+ is the height from sea level to the summit of Mont Blanc ⬆️—except here you do it by bike, after having already swum almost 4 km 🫠. We’re not saying it’s insane… but kind of 🚴. And because it wouldn’t be fun otherwise, once the bike is done, there’s still a marathon: 42 km with almost 1,300 meters of elevation gain, between roads and trails, around the Capcir plateau 🤩. The official final cutoff time to complete the adventure? 1:30 a.m. Yes, in the morning 😳. The Altriman also offers four formats, from the Sprint (the “I’ll try before I go crazy” option) to the Olympic, via the Half! Because yes, you don’t need to be keen on spending the night out there to take part in this tri! 😜

A fact worth highlighting: in 2021, only 52% of participants finished the race. In 2024, 75%. In 2025, the record: 89% finishers 🤯. Safe to say that even the toughest don’t all come out unscathed from this adventure 🗺️. And that’s precisely what makes it beautiful: here, nothing is guaranteed, nothing is manufactured just to look good on social media 🤳. A lake at dawn, silence at altitude, and volunteers taking great care of you: a nature event through and through, Pyrenees-style Pyrenees 🏔️.

Ya'ltri is about to start—hurry up! 😉
