We meet you in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, at Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, right in the heart of Ain for an event you really shouldn’t miss: The Marathon de Bresse Dombes! 🚩 You know the saying, "sport is a part of pleasure!"? No? Well, that's normal, we made it up especially for the occasion! 😆 This event is the perfect mix between sporting activities 🎽 and festive moments 🥳. All accompanied by a touristic and culinary discovery of the region in a quirky atmosphere 🤪. It's the kind of menu we love, right? 🥘 Born in 2021, the Marathon Bresse Dombes has become a spring must-do thanks to all its attributes. In 2025, there were more than 4,300 participants. This year, you will be among them to set a new participation record! 😎
So, if this description made your mouth water 🤤, that's great because we haven't even gotten to the main course 🍴. It’s late April 🌻 that we meet you, arms bare and ankles in the wind 🌬️ to start. On the menu, 5 main courses: an individual marathon or in relay 2-person or 4-person 🤝, a half-marathon, a 10 km, and a 5 km. For the small appetites, 2 charitable walks are offered to raise funds for the League Against Cancer 💪. The first is 7.5 km long and the other 11.6 km. All registration proceeds are donated, which amounted to €10,000 for the 2025 edition 🤯. A children’s menu 👦 is also available to make this event a true family gathering 👨👩👧👦. Still, we prefer to warn you to avoid surprises before your dish is served: you'll get an extra elevation gain 📈. Too easy otherwise! 😅 Brace yourself to face 310 mD+ for the marathon and 178 mD+ for the half. Nothing inedible insurmountable, rest assured! 😏 A bit of challenge always spices up the dish, right? 🌶️ So prepare your legs for the big day... but also your stomach! Gourmet refreshments, typical of the region, will tease your taste buds 😋. And if you can't wait for race day, a gourmet meal 🍽️ is organized on Saturday evening (by reservation) to kick off the festivities early.
Eating is one thing, but that's not what makes the competition interesting... 😜 There are also the picturesque landscapes awaiting you on the course 🥰. You'll notably have the opportunity to cross several towns with unique charm! 🤌 Villages, wooded paths, the ponds of Dombes, beautiful architecture, and even castles 🏰... It's not just a typical road race you're going to run since nature will also be a part of it 🌳. The friendly aspect is also a key highlight of the event 👍. You'll find many musical animations 🎷 in the heart of the towns. By the way, you can already put away your running t-shirt and start looking for your best costume 🎩. YES, the races are in costume! (and there’s even a contest 🏆) Not mandatory of course, but the photos 📸 from previous editions will surely tempt you into trying this quirky adventure 😉. Therefore, in a more than festive atmosphere 🎉, you’ll be able to run these kilometers, with the 14 animation points on your course 🪅.
The Marathon de Bresse Dombes is therefore an all-in-one event: a guided tour of the beautiful villages of the region, a tasting of local and typical products, and a great opportunity to dress up/have fun. So, who will you be the first weekend of May? Spiderman 🕸️, Jack Sparrow, or Pikachu? 🤔 It's your choice! 🫵
Message from the organizer:
"A pride to organize a festive, friendly event with local gastronomic flavors through the Bresse and Dombes in Ain."
Go marathoners, it's time for an incredible course! 😏
You take off in the heart of the beautiful commune and the former medieval city of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, which has also obtained the Villes et Villages Fleuris label 💐 as well as Most Beautiful Detour of France 🇫🇷. The marathon officially kicks off in front of the Bel-Air Hippodrome.
You will reach your first refreshment point, located at the ponds of the Dombes, revealing a surprising scenery. This is a land of birds 🦅, with exceptional fauna and flora, in a preserved nature 🦍. Your course is punctuated by green spaces 🌳 of the city and the famous ponds 🚣♀️ leading you to the next highlight town of your race, Neuville-les-dames, a small flowery commune 🌸 with its typical places (including the beautiful church ⛪️ in the center). It's at this intersection that you'll complete a loop 🔁 bringing you back to the same spot. This loop allows you to cross neighboring communes and hamlets. You will still spend a large part in a natural setting with the Field of the Pond at the 9th km, followed by the Château de Chatenay 🏰, 1 km further, where a princely refreshment awaits 👑. You then reach the charming village of Chanoz-Châtenay to head back into natural paths, especially in the Field of Biziat. At a cruising pace, you'll pass through small villages to arrive at the more urban part 🏙️ of your course. It's in the heart 💓 of the village of Vonnas that the atmosphere and the locals will await you, just a few kilometers before delving back into your (almost) exhaustive discovery of the commune 👀.
You will follow the watercourse 🌊, the Rénon. You'll then change landscapes to head into the fields 🌾. Another good refreshment will be waiting for you at the Château de Longe 🏰. So it is through these natural spaces and wooded paths 🪵 that you'll return to the commune of Neuville-les-Dames. There will be one last castle along your route: that of La Chassagne, at the 34th km, which also corresponds to a refreshment point 🧃.
You will then start the final part of your race bringing you back to your starting point on a path parallel to the one you took initially. Indeed! The organizers made sure to have you run in the city's greenest areas 👍. Your flamboyant finish will take place at Prés Gaudet 🖼️, offering you a last bucolic scenery 🌳.
Your course of the relay marathon will obviously be the same as the classic marathon. The baton exchange happens halfway through in the village of Vonnas, on Vernay Street at the event hall 🤝.
Your route will remain the same as the classic marathon. The baton exchange takes place at the kilometers indicated below:
It's on the beautiful 21 km course that you'll start. Tighten your shoes for the Bresse Dombes half-marathon! 👟
Your start will be in the lovely commune of Vonnas, which was named "First Gourmet Village of France" at the initiative of Georges Blanc 😋. In fact, your start will be in front of the restaurant of this great chef for a taste of your course! 🍴 In the lively atmosphere of the village, you'll set off to start this race 🏁. You'll head straight to the watercourse, the Rénon, to soak in the pastoral scenery offered by this race 🥰🌿. Your route will let you discover ancient architectures such as the Moulin de la Poule and the Moulin Burel. Your 4th km will bring you to the Château de Longe, the grand lord of the roads 🏰.
After this majestic interlude, you'll head back into the rural parts of the city. And we assure you, you'll be far from the typical road races! Indeed, the paths taken will show you green and natural spots of the city to enjoy an exotic setting 🏞.
These kilometers will take you through the Dombes ponds, revealing a wild landscape. You'll then reach the halfway point of your course at Neuville-les-dames, a small flowered commune.
The finish takes place at the heart of the beautiful commune and former medieval town 🤺 of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne (which has also been awarded the Villes et villages fleuris labels as well as the Most Beautiful Detour of France). Congratulations to you! 👏
For this walk of 12 km, you will start from Charles de Gaulle Avenue, located in Châtillon sur Chalaronne, in the morning ☀️. This wellness walk will take you on a tour of the town (literally! 😅). You will pass through some main roads, cross the watercourse "Chalaronne" and even breathe in a bit of the fresh air and greenery found to the south of the town. You will then approach the Fairground to reach the finish line 🏁.
The proceeds from this walk will be donated to the League Against Cancer 🎗️.
10 km, it's a sufficient distance to enjoy the crazy atmosphere and to discover the green landscapes that await you on your journey! 🥳
You will start your race in the heart of the beautiful town and the former medieval city of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne (which also has the labels of Flower-filled towns and villages 🌸 as well as Most beautiful detours of France) 🇫🇷. Your route, beginning at Hippodrome Bel-Air, will allow you to discover the rural outskirts and the green spaces that compose it 🏞. It's thus in a setting of greenery and wooded paths that you can embark on a unique and festive race 🎉. And since it is a 10 km, you can try to beat your time ⏱ or just enjoy the experience in a friendly atmosphere.
The finish line will also be in the city center and will lead you along the watercourse the Chalaronne 🌊.
Just like the walk of 12 km, this 7.2 km walk will take you on a tour of the city. To do this, you will start from Avenue Charles de Gaulle in the middle of the morning before finishing your walk at the Fairground of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne.
As the name suggests, the proceeds collected will be donated to the League Against Cancer.
