Ready to explore the jewel of the Alpes Mancelles on the run? 🌲 The Grand Trail du Lac de Sillé invites you to experience a 100% trail weekend, blending wild nature, historical heritage, and a high-flying athletic challenge. If you thought the Sarthe was limited to the Hunaudières Straight 🏎️, get ready for a serious visual shock. Here, every stride brings you closer to incredible landscapes and an adventure your quads won’t soon forget 🏔️. Forget the asphalt and switch to exploration mode in scenery that has nothing to envy to more distant mountain ranges. The Pays de la Loire in late September is objectively the best in terms of weather. The big heat is over ☀️ and winter hasn’t arrived yet ❄️. So you have everything you need to perform! 💪
The journey starts on Saturday evening with a bright warm-up. The night trail "Discovering Sillé" offers total immersion in the historic heart of Sillé-le-Guillaume 🏰. By the light of your headlamp 🔦, you’ll slalom for 14 km past the city’s most beautiful buildings and emblematic places, in a rather hushed atmosphere 🏰. It’s a chance to discover the local heritage from a unique angle, before enjoying an aid station and a tasty finish to kick off the weekend’s hostilities properly 😈. On Sunday, the vibe shifts up a gear with four formats designed for every profile, from the curious beginner to the ultra-trail runner thirsty for kilometers 😍. For the boldest, the "Tour of the Alpes Mancelles" unfurls its 90 km and 1,700 mD+ 📈. It’s a true feat of strength, disguised as an ultra-trail and certified ITRA & UTMB INDEX, that will take you to the very edge of yourself. If you prefer the marathon format, the "Stag Maratrail" awaits with its 44 km and 1,000 mD+. If you’re more speed-oriented or into intermediate distances ⚡️, "The Stag Loop" (24 km / 500 mD+) and "The Roe Deer Round" (8 km / 100 mD+) will offer you punchy, stimulating playgrounds 🦌. And if you’re insatiable and can’t choose, the "2-race Challenge" lets you double up on Saturday and Sunday to test your endurance over time 🎖️.
The course’s expertise lies in this smart blend of forest tracks 🌳, technical singletrack, and open panoramas over the lake 🛶. You’ll weave through the heart of the state forest of Sillé-le-Guillaume (on foot, okay—not in a boat, that would be too easy 🤪), a green haven you’ll still be dreaming about (or having nightmares about) three weeks later 😮💨. Far from monotonous: the terrain changes, the ground sometimes gives way beneath your feet, and the view over the lake regularly reminds you why you pinned on a bib 🙃. It’s wild, it’s raw, and it’s exactly what we’re looking for when we sign up for a trail race of this caliber 🌲. The atmosphere on site reflects the locals: friendly and authentic. Right next to the start village, the Camping Seasonova de la Forêt becomes runners’ HQ to relax, grab food, or extend the adventure with family ⛺. You’re not coming only to run—you’re coming to share a moment with other people just as crazy passionate as you 🫣. Between team challenges for companies or clubs and rewards for 100% female groups 💕, team spirit is everywhere 🤝.
After enjoying the event, take the time to taste the local terroir, which doesn’t lack character (just like the trail—you’re starting to get it...) 😬. You don’t leave Sillé without paying tribute to the famous Sarthe rillettes, perfect for guilt-free post-race recovery 🥖. For lovers of old stones 🗿, the Château de Sillé-le-Guillaume, an imposing fortress overlooking the town, is worth a visit after your race. If you still have a bit of energy left in your legs 🦵, a walk to the Saut du Serf or a boat ride on the lake will round off your weekend in style 🚣. It’s the ideal spot for a total green escape, far from the urban bustle 🍀.
So, what are you waiting for to join the pack? 🐺 Put away your console, forget your series, and come bound along the Sarthe trails. Your legs may creak, but your mind will be galloping long after the finish line 🏁.
The "Tour des Alpes de Mancelles" is clearly the biggest ultra-trail in Sarthe! You're in for 90 km and 1,700 mD+ ! 🤪
Start from the Camping Seasonova de la Forêt heading north towards Mont-Saint-Jean and its Château de la Lucazière, La Touche before reaching Saint-Georges-le-Gaultier at km 17 and the neighboring town of Saint-Paul-le-Gaultier at km 20. A succession of lovely climbs and descents will introduce you to the technical trails the region is full of 🎢. You'll reach Saint-Léonard-des-Bois at km 27 and follow a stretch of the Sarthe up to Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei at km 34. Take the time to look around you—this is the moment when the view over the valleys is incredible! ✨
A relatively flat section will take you to Gesnes-le-Gandelin and the outskirts of the Château de Vaux at km 49. You'll have done a little more than half at this point! 💪
You'll head back out on the trails of the National Forest, run towards Le Moulin de Rance and Fresnay-sur-Sarthe at km 61 to rejoin the crowds! 🚗 You'll be able to see another castle—at least you're getting an eyeful!
Come on, just a few more really tough climbs 📈 in the heart of nature to head back towards Sillé, and you'll be able to enjoy the finish-line festivities... and a well-deserved rest! 😁
Ready for the "Stag Maratrail"? 🦌 Well, if you still haven’t understood the concept, you’re about to run a marathon (even a bit more), trail-style. 44 km and 1,000 mD+ of pure bliss!
Start from the shore of Lake Sillé next to Camping Seasonova de la Forêt. You’ll head east alongside the Grande Ligne. At km 9, you’ll get a nice, fairly technical descent 📉—watch your ankles! Then you’ll head back in the direction of the Étang du Moulin 💦, which you’ll loop around at km 20. You’ll take the direction of Montreuil-le-Chétif, but you’ll turn around before reaching the urban section. At km 33, you’ll start your return to the starting point with a great sequence of climbs and descents 🎢. After 44 km, the finish line will be yours! 🏁
The "Stag Loop" of the Grand Trail du Lac de Sillé takes you on 24 km with 500 mD+ through the heart of the Sillé National Forest 🌳. Like the other distances, you'll start from the lakeshore and follow the trails toward La Devise, near Montreuil-le-Chétif. Be warned, it's not all flat—you'll get a few nice climbs 📈. At km 12, before another climb that will take you onto a plateau at 260 m above sea level 🌊. You'll come back via the south of the lake (not without putting your quads to work again on the climbs! 🦵), and after 24 km you'll find your starting point again—this time for the finish! 🏁
"The Roe Deer Loop" will start next to the Seasonova de la Forêt Campsite on the shore of Lake Sillé 🛶. You’ll set off straight away onto the trails of the state-owned forest, cross the Grande Ligne, and head back down to the south of the lake to go around it. At km 5, you’ll pass by the Huttopia Campsite ⛺️ before climbing back up toward your starting point. You’ll have done your 8 km—your weekend is already well underway! 🤪
