In Old French, a cavale means a mare 🐎 . So it makes sense to see La Cavale gallop onto the track of the Hippodrome des Fleurs, in Biarritz, a pearl of the Basque coast nestled in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. For one evening, the horses make way for runners, with a pack of Trackers on their heels. The event is run in late November, once night has fallen over the Basque Country 🌙 . Weather-wise, the ocean keeps things relatively mild at this time of year, even if the Basque rain loves to crash Saturday evening parties ☔ . A light layer will do: with the Trackers behind you, you'll never have time to cool down!
Here, there is no finish line to aim for: your playground is a 800 m loop laid out on the illuminated track of the racecourse 💡 . In terms of elevation, we proudly display a lovely 0 m D+, on a track as flat as a talo, the local corn flatbread. Runners start together under the arch, then the Trackers, runners selected by the organizers, set off behind them at a leisurely pace. With every lap, they crank it up another notch ⚙️ . Getting caught marks the end of your escape, sealed by a shot from a laser pistol 🚨 . The first laps feel like a jog with friends, and soon it turns into an interval session that really hurts 🔥 .
The principle recalls the elimination race in track cycling, or the backyard ultra, where the last one standing wins 🏆 . No timer or imposed distance: the ranking is based on the distance covered before your capture, and the last fugitive still free takes the victory. Behind this fun concept are the agency Hondarra, already behind the Anglet Beach Rugby Festival, and the Mouvement Running Club. The idea came from an organizer who grew up in the racecourse neighborhood, where all of Biarritz comes to run its training laps 🏠 . Thanks to the gradual acceleration, this night race in an unusual venue can be shared with your friends or family during the first laps, before everyone finds their limit 🤝 .
After the hunt, it's time for Basque-style recovery 🍰 . A Basque cake, filled with cream or black cherry, refuels your reserves better than a gel, and chipirons (baby squid) spiced with Espelette pepper will warm up the frozen, drenched fugitives 🌶️ . The next day, an easy recovery jog along the seafront will take you to the Rocher de la Vierge, with the waves of the Atlantic as a soundtrack 🌊 . Legs that are still game will even climb up to the Biarritz lighthouse, from where your gaze stretches toward Spain on a clear day 🗺️ .
One last piece of advice before the start: at La Cavale, keep a cool head and warm legs, or you'll end up caught by the patrol! 😅
Message from the organizer
"The idea is to organize an original race in a place that speaks to everyone in Biarritz, because everybody trains around the Hippodrome des Fleurs track. This stadium is also in the neighborhood where I grew up, so it's a great nod to organize a race at home."
The start is a mass start under the arch, on the track of the Hippodrome des Fleurs 🏁 . The 800 m loop forms a perfectly flat ring, without a single meter of positive elevation, ideal for a fast, flowing race. On the main straight, you will run past the aid station and the scoring table, two valuable landmarks for taking a sip of water or signaling that you are dropping out 🥤 . The first laps are run in jogging mode, at the easy pace set by the Trackers. Lap after lap, the pace goes up a notch, and the stroll turns into a demanding race where your breath grows shorter 😮💨 . Your evening ends the moment they catch up with you, with no finish line other than that laser shot 🔦 . Depending on your form, the adventure will last from half an hour to about an hour and a half.
