The perfect event to take the plunge (literally 😳)!
At Finishers, we’re specialists in running, but we’re not on bad terms with aquatic environments either 💦. And as proof, let us tell you about Lyon Kayak, one of the biggest on-the-water events in the region 🤯. The concept is simple: instead of visiting Lyon from the banks, you see the banks from your boat. And yes, it’s right in the middle of the water that you’ll glide between city and nature, with that little feeling of adventure in the heart of an urban setting 🌊.
In September, before the summer heat fades, put away your sneakers and your big armored calves—it’s time for the paddles to take the stage 🚣♂️. The event is split into 3 routes for all ages and all levels. The "Family Route" offers an introduction to the sport with 6 km on the Saône, between Vaise and La Confluence 📏. Luckily for everyone’s arms, the race goes with the current, so there’s no way you’ll stall halfway. The kids might even ask you for a second lap 🔂. Next, the "Discovery Route" of 14 km (and still no elevation gain 😂) lets you extend the fun while seeing more greenery north of the Capital of the Gauls. The course starts above Vaise, takes you along Île Barbe and finishes at the Confluence dock. So you can share the party and the post-race beer with the finishers of the "Family Route". One big celebration, from start to finish 🤪. For the most competitive among us, a "Sport Route" stretches over 21 km (yes, yes—a half-marathon by paddle strokes 😅) and takes part of the course upstream against the current, to really work your entire muscular chain 🥵. Over this final distance, you’ll meet French and international paddlers, so buckle up (or at least hold on to your jersey) and get ready to bring the heat 🔥.
You’ll see: once you’re in the race, you’ll be overwhelmed by water emotions 😊. You paddle in the city, but you feel somewhere else, between reflections, riverbanks and viewpoints that change with every bend. But beyond races of all sizes, Lyon Kayak is also a true festival of festivities ✨. On Saturday’s agenda: an exhibitor village, qualifying races in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, try-out sessions and the famous "Zhik Mix Open Air" to dance late into the evening 🕺. The next day is race day, so make sure to rest—but don’t hold back your best moovs of Tecktonik either ⚡️.
Once the weekend is over, you have two options: go home and rest after two action-packed days, or keep the momentum going and make the most of the time you have ahead 😎. If you’re leaning toward the second option, first go for a stroll in Confluence for its modern vibe and quays 🚢. Since both the start and finish of Lyon Kayak are concentrated there, you’ll quickly get your bearings. Then you can cross over to the Presqu’île to wander between squares and small streets, climb up to Fourvière for a unique view over the city center, or take a trip to the Parc de la Tête d’Or to discover the little creatures that fill the local zoo 😌.
So, ready for the big landing boarding? 🏴☠️
