The event in a few words

Ahhh, the month of August...

...The beach, lounging around, palm trees—finally some rest! 🌴

But not for you 😈. Set course for the little village of Eidfjord, nestled at the end of the immense Hardangerfjord in Norway 🇳🇴for the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon. This race is an absolute myth born in 2003 from the (slightly frosty 🥶) mind of its founders, Hårek Stranheim and Bent Olav Olsen 👏. The course profile is a monster showing more than 5,000 meters of total positive elevation gain 😳. Back then, Norwegian triathlon was close to clinical death with only 9 finishers over the long distance in the whole country 😬. To reignite the flame, Hårek had this crazy idea: create the most grandiose and most brutal journey on the planet, an odyssey that ends way up there, on the top of a mountain...🏔️ The main setting? Hardangervidda National Park and the majestic Hardangerfjord, a breathtaking backdrop, perfect for testing your mental strength 🧠

Hang on, because you're stepping into the World Championships of triathlon, within the XTRI World Tour! 👏 The immersion begins in absolute darkness, at 4 a.m., with a dizzying jump from the deck of a ferry into the black, icy water of the fjord (often between 13°C and 15°C) for 3.8 km of swimming toward the shore at Eidfjord 🏊. Once out of the water, the adventure continues on your two-wheeled steed for 180 km of cycling through rugged terrain and ultra-steep climbs 📈. An absolutely epic cycling route awaits you with more than 3,000 m of elevation gain 😨. If your thighs survive this special treatment, you'll still have to follow it up with a full marathon of running. The first half of the run obediently follows Lake Tinnsjøen to let you digest the kilometers, before switching into mountaineering mode from Rjukan 🏔️. That’s where the race’s ultimate judge rises up: the final ascent of Mount Gaustatoppen, at 1 883 meters of altitude📍. Legend has it that during the first edition, the team’s die-hard, Fredrik Mandt, measured the 5 kilometers of the mountain trail using nothing more than a simple 10m rope 🪢. The first 160 athletes who reach km 37 at Stavsro earn the right to climb all the way to the top of Mount Gaustatoppen to claim the ultimate Grail: the legendary black finisher 🏆 t-shirt. The others will finish their effort on a lower route, over the same distance, to raise a white t-shirt just as well deserved (still 🥵). Oh! Also: this triathlon must be done self-supported, so we hope you’ve got a solid crew of friends to handle your aid stations 😉.

Keep one last survival instinct to honor the very hearty Norwegian gastronomy once your body is warmed up and back down in the valley 🫂. Carry your battered body to a lodge to devour a traditional Finnbiff (a generous reindeer-meat stew with cream and mushrooms) to repair your muscle fibers 🦵. When you wake up, comfort yourself with thick Norwegian waffles topped with Brunost (the surprising local brown cheese with a caramelized taste) 🧇. Above all, celebrate your entry into the triathlon pantheon by toasting with your faithful assistants over a small glass of Aquavit (the Scandinavian spirit) or a local beer.

Ignite your Viking soul and come challenge the mountain! 💥
