The event in a few words

Tjena ! 🇸🇪 That’s how the people of Gothenburg say hello, and you’ll hear it echoing on the wooden pontoons all day long ☀️. The month of July plays host to: the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Göteborg, which returns every year offshore from Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city clinging to the west coast ⬅️. Here, there’s no need to choose between swimming and running: you chain the two together without catching your breath, island to island, amid a string of granite rocks 🪨. Three formats share the same day: ExperienceSprint and World Series, and the toughest one serves as a stop on the swimrun world circuit 🥇.

To grasp the soul of the event, go back to 2002, in the bar of an inn in the Stockholm archipelago. Four fairly tipsy friends scribble a map and throw down a challenge: the last team to reach Sandhamn pays for the hotel, dinner, and the next round 🍻. Those four friends, nicknamed the Original 4, have just invented a sport without even realizing it ☀️. In 2006, two Swedish adventurers, Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott, turn the joke into an official race and name it ÖTILLÖ, meaning “island to island” in Swedish 🇸🇪. The first edition brings together eleven teams; only two finish within the time limit, life jacket on their backs and, for one of them, fake inflatable phones as makeshift floats 😅. The World Series circuit is launched in 2015, and Gothenburg quickly establishes itself as one of its most sought-after stops ⭐️.

The playground unfolds around Styrsö Bratten, in the southern Gothenburg archipelago. Picture islands without a single car, linked by ferries, where asphalt gives way to trails and granite slabs polished by the sea 🌊. The course multiplies water entries and exits at a breakneck pace: you gallop along smooth park paths, you climb to viewpoints like Stora Rös, the roof of Styrsö, then you plunge back into the drink to reach the neighboring island ⚡️. Distances are set to match your appetite: first, the “Experience”: 8.83 km (1.32 km of swimming and 7.51 km of running), then 22.79 km for the “Sprint” split into 3.84 km in the water and 18.95 km on foot 🦶. We finish with the 39.75 kmWorld Series” course, with its 6.76 km of swimming and 32.99 km of running. Steep stuff, singletrack, repeated transitions: the menu has enough to satisfy even the hungriest legs 🏃. Here’s one last piece of good news for your toes: with 18 °C in the water and 21 °C in the air, you swim here in relative comfort, far from the 10° to 12 °C that usually freeze Nordic events 🌡.

ÖTILLÖ doesn’t just make up the numbers—it plays in the big leagues 🤓. The flagship race, the swimrun world championship linking Sandhamn to Utö over 75 km, regularly ranks among the most formidable one-day races on the planet, according to CNN ‼️ As a World Series stop, Gothenburg hands out qualifying points toward that Swedish grail 🏅. Today, swimrun boasts more than 600 races and nearly 50,000 participants worldwide—enough to measure the distance covered since that 2002 paper napkin.

Swimrun has its own codes: you run in a wetsuit, swim in shoes, and link it all up without any transition ❌. There’s no bag to drop off, no downtime ⏱. You set off as a duo or solo, depending on what you’re after, and on the course you’ll run into both top circuit athletes and beginners trying the format for the first time 👀. All around, spectators arrive by ferry at regular intervals and cheer you on from the pontoons and rocks, in an atmosphere of a typically Swedish summer festival 🎉. The July sun, the little red wooden houses, and the supporters’ smiles turn the race into a real aquatic party 💦.

Wetsuit barely rinsed, Gothenburg opens its arms to you 🦞. The city breathes sea air: head to the fish market hall Feskekörka for a shrimp sandwich, a few oysters, or a plate freshly hauled in from offshore 🍤. The local ritual has a name, fika: a coffee break paired with a cinnamon bun—and the city boasts around forty craft breweries for throats in search of hops 🍺. Between two treats, wander the cobblestoned lanes of the Haga district or climb to the top of Styrsö to take in the whole archipelago in a single glance 😍

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Gothenburg leaves you with just one certainty: on these granite islands, you never get only half wet 🌊.
