The swimrun L no longer forgives approximation ❌. Over this long distance, every transition, every surge after the swim, every extra kilometer weighs on the mind as much as on the body 🥵. It’s the format for those who want to go and find their limits, not just brush up against them.

After a certain number of hours of effort, swimrun stops being a matter of pure technique 🤌. The L format opens up that zone—the one where your head has to take over when your legs start to bargain 🫠. You no longer count transitions like in the M format; you experience them differently: every exit from the water becomes a bit heavier, every stride on the trail demands an extra effort of concentration 🧠. The cold, built up over multiple entries into the water, eventually settles in for good in the muscles 🥶.

The mechanics remain the same as the ones that made the discipline famous: alternating swimming in a natural environment and running on trails, generally connected to your partner by a tether 🪢. But on an L format, that tether becomes far more than a simple safety link. It reflects an accepted mutual dependence: when one falters, the other must adjust their pace without losing patience 🧘‍♀️. Managing this as a pair, spread over several hours, turns the challenge into an exercise that is almost as psychological as it is physical 🧠.

This format is clearly not for novices ‼️ It targets participants already seasoned on shorter formats, able to string together a substantial mixed effort volume without seeing their motivation collapse halfway through 😬. Some long-distance triathletes find in it an original way to test their endurance outside the classic swim-bike-run framework 🚴. The season remains focused on spring and summer, when natural waters still make it possible to consider several long stretches of swimming without a full wetsuit and when outdoor running is manageable ☀️.

In the Gulf of Morbihan, the Troll Enez Swimrun, in Séné, has forged a formidable reputation thanks to its powerful sea currents and its demanding route between the islands 🏝️. Farther south, the SWIMRUNMAN of the Gorges du Verdon, in Les Salles-sur-Verdon, plunges competitors into the turquoise waters of Lake Sainte-Croix, framed by Provence’s limestone cliffs 🏞️. At the other end of the Mediterranean coastline, the Swimrun Côte Vermeille, in Argelès-sur-Mer, offers a long format that follows the Catalan border over a rocky terrain typical of the Pyrénées-Orientales ⛰️.

The Swedish birthplace of swimrun still keeps its flagship event: the ÖTILLÖ World Championship, which each year links Sandhamn to Utö through a succession of rocky islands and open sea channels 🌊. On the western side of the Atlantic, ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Casco Bay follows that same island philosophy on the Maine coast, in a setting typical of New England 📍. Then head to the Rockies, where ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Colorado transposes the concept into a mountain and lake environment—at the opposite extreme from the maritime landscapes that founded the discipline 🏔️.

There’s an image that often comes back among long-format regulars: two silhouettes emerging from the water at the same instant, out of breath, without a word—just a look that’s enough to set off again together 👊. Sofie Enander, multiple-time ÖTILLÖ world champion, sums it up differently: over long distances, slowing down for your teammate is never a weakness—it’s often what allows both to finish on their feet ⚡️. This philosophy of mutual sacrifice shapes the identity of the L format far more than any set of figures 🔥. You don’t choose swimrun L on a whim on a Sunday morning. It’s prepared, discussed with your partner, built over several months of cross-training between pool and trails 🌲.

Find the swimrun L calendar on Finishers to spot the race that will fit your duo and your shared progression. Once the format is identified, there’s only one thing left to do: book your bib and accept that the real finish line, at this distance, is always crossed as a pair 🎽.
