The swimrun S captures the DNA of the original swimrun born in Sweden, but in a tighter format 😌. You alternate open-water swimming and trail running, with no transition, in the same outfit from start to finish 🌊. Designed as a first introduction to the sport, this format keeps all the intensity of classic swimrun without the mileage. A perfect way to test the cold water and the breathless trail—without spending your whole day on it 🧘‍♀️.

Two Swedish friends, a bet made after a boozy night, and the crazy idea of linking several islands by alternating swimming and running without ever changing outfits: that’s how swimrun was born ⚡️. The S format keeps all the same codes, but scaled to something more accessible 😃. Here, water and land answer each other without interruption: you get out of the lake or the sea dripping wet, you roll straight onto a rocky path with the same shoes on your feet, and you do it again a few minutes later 🏊. That brutal continuity between two elements that oppose each other is what makes the sport so distinctive 🤌.

The principle is simple on paper: swimming segments in a natural environment, broken up by running sections on trails, often as a duo connected by a rope 🪢. That physical link between the two partners is anything but anecdotal: it forces you to move at the same pace, to wait for each other, to deal with the other’s fatigue 💃. The S format offers a shorter total distance than traditional swimrun, designed to help you get used to the alternation without burning out in the first few hundred meters 🤓. The body has to handle opposing constraints: the cold that grips you each time you enter the water, then the heat that takes over again on the next trail 🏃‍♀️. This thermal and muscular juggling act requires an adaptation few other sports demand 🤯.

This short format appeals to a wide audience: curious swimmers interested in running, runners who have never dared try open water, or simply those looking for something different from a classic format 🙃. No triathlete background is needed to give it a go; the reduced distance makes it accessible from the very first try ✅. The best season generally runs from late spring to early autumn, when natural waters remain doable without a thick wetsuit or superhuman courage ☀️.

Three French events let you try swimrun S without crossing the Atlantic. The Triathlon SwimRun Dinard Côte d'Émeraude, in Saint-Lunaire, follows Brittany’s customs officers’ path between coves and pink granite 🏞️. The Swimrun Côte d'Azur, in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, offers an S format of 8 km facing the Mediterranean, not far from Nice 📍. Finally, the USOL'Swimrun, in Yzeron, crosses lakes and ponds in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region on an S format of 4 km, less than an hour from Lyon 🚗.

Internationally, the ÖTILLÖ circuit remains the ultimate benchmark, having invented the sport in 2002 in the Stockholm archipelago 🇸🇪. The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö event takes place on the very waters where the concept was born, between rocky islands and dense forests 🌳. On the other side of the Atlantic, ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Casco Bay takes teams along the coast of Maine, in an archipelago typical of New England ⚡️. Further inland, ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Colorado transposes the formula into a mountainous, lake-filled setting in the Rockies 🏔️.

The spirit of swimrun keeps something artisanal about it: little high-tech gear, near-blind trust in your partner, and the idea that the finish line is crossed together—or not at all 🤷‍♀️. That solidarity imposed by the rope remains the common thread throughout the sport, from the Breton lake to the Mediterranean calanques 🐠. It turns a physical challenge into a shared experience, where helping each other sometimes matters more than the stopwatch 🫂.

Frenchman Hugo Tormento, a multiple-time podium finisher on the sport’s world stage, embodies this very particular effort management in swimrun, where getting along with your teammate sometimes matters more than pure speed 🏅. The spirit of swimrun keeps something artisanal about it: little high-tech gear, near-blind trust in your partner, and the idea that the finish line is crossed together—or not at all 🤷‍♀️. This solidarity imposed by the tether remains the common thread of the entire sport, from Breton granite to Swedish rocks 😎.

So, tempted by the coves of Dinard, the Nice Mediterranean, or the lakes of Yzeron for your first outing? Browse the swimrun S calendar on Finishers, spot the next swimrun S race suited to your level, and go for it: booking your bib has never taken your breath away as much as that first plunge 🎽.
