The event in a few words

In June, at this latitude, the sun almost never brings itself to set: the days stretch into infinity and the Stockholm archipelago basks in a golden light until late into the night ☀️. It’s in this setting that the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö wakes up each year, on the small island of Utö, south of the Swedish archipelago 🇸🇪. This is more than a race: it’s the official kickoff to the Nordic season. And for anyone who practices swimrun, one of the most symbol-laden meetups on the planet 🌍.

Because you have to go back to the summer of 2002 to understand why Utö is seen as a holy place 🧘‍♀️. That year, in the bar of the Utö Värdshus inn, Anders Malm and three buddies sketch a map of the islands on a napkin and toss out a barstool idea: the last team to reach Sandhamn pays for the hotel and the rounds 💶. Two duos take up the challenge the next morning and need more than twenty-four hours to complete the loop 🫣. Four years later, Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott turn it into a real event: ÖTILLÖ, “island to island” in Swedish 💭. At first, barely eleven teams dare to line up, and two cross the finish line within the time limit ⏱️. Twenty years later, that boozy bet has become a world championship whose finish line is… right here, on Utö 🏆.

The terrain alone is worth the trip. In the north of the island, rugged granite cliffs drop straight into an ink-blue Baltic Sea; to the south, the landscape calms down and unfolds sandy beaches 🌲. Between the two, technical singletrack trails wind through the pine forest, where your footing needs as much care as your breathing 🌬️. Three distances let you take it on: the Experience with its 5.95 km of running and 1.1 km of swimming to discover the sport through lots of short combos; the Sprint at 18 km total, is punchy and packed with transitions; and the World Series adds up to 27.59 km of running and 4.5 km of swimming 🏊. This full version features shifting ground and short dips that jolt you awake ⚡️. It climbs in places, but every drop ends with a breakout view toward the open sea that quickly makes you forget the effort 🏞️.

One number sums up the spirit of the place better than any other: 13°C. That’s the water temperature in mid-June, and fair warning: the Nordic Baltic is rarely on the mild side 🥶. Every plunge snaps like a call to order—and that’s exactly what gives this season opener its slightly harsh, almost initiatory feel 🫨. Also note that the World Series is a qualifier: the points earned on the island count in the race for the world championship in September. This event of around 70 km is ranked by CNN among the toughest on the globe 🎟️. Racing Utö means placing one foot in legend—and the other in icy water 🧊.

And since you’ve come all the way to the cradle of swimrun, take time to enjoy the afterglow 🎉. On Utö itself, the Utö Värdshus (the inn where the sport was born) remains the ideal HQ to piece your shoulders back together over a great meal and a well-deserved drink 🍻. The island then lends itself to wandering: bike rentals to roam the coastal paths, a (more forgiving) swim on the southern sandy beaches, or a detour to the remains of Sweden’s oldest iron mine 🤩. And if you want to extend the trip, the capital is just a boat ride away: set across 14 islands linked by 57 bridges, Stockholm blends the medieval alleyways of Gamla Stan, its museums, and its pared-back Scandinavian design—plenty to wrap up the stay with dry feet, and without a wetsuit this time 😉.

If running where it all began gets under your skin, the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö welcomes you with open arms 🚀.
