We take you to a massive altitude dose in Switzerland ๐จ๐ญ, at the heart of the Highlands Bernese region, in Gstaad โฐ๏ธ. The Swiss Highlands Trail is the must-attend event of mid-September for all fans of sharp peaks and breathtaking panoramas ๐.
For two days, the region transforms into an exceptional playground with a total of 6 sporting challenges ๐ช. Whether you come for an explosive format or a long adventure ๐โโ๏ธ, you will be served: the main event, the "Highlander 60", features 62 km for 3,589 mD+ ๐ฅต. If you're looking for a strong intermediate challenge, the "Highlander Marathon 42" with its 2,680 mD+ will test your endurance, while the "Highlander 25" (1,300 mD+) and the "Highlander 15" (900 mD+) offer shorter but equally intense formats โก๏ธ. Let's not forget the younger generation with the "Highlander Family" allowing you to share the last kilometer of your race with your child ๐ง, or the more daring who will face the "2D Challenge" combining the marathon event and the 15 km. Prepare your legs, because here, the elevation gives no quarter! ๐ฆต
The terrain is a concentration of mountain expertise ๐๏ธ. We leave the asphalt to tackle technical and wild trails ๐ฒ, characteristic of trail running in an alpine environment ๐. You will alternate between single-tracks in forests, steep ascents on rocky paths, and aerial ridges where the view over the Bernese glaciers will make you forget the burn in your thighs ๐ . Technicality is omnipresent with root crossings and lively terrains that require constant focus ๐. This is the essence of trail running: a raw effort, a preserved nature ๐, and landscapes that deserve the strength of willpower ๐ง . Perfect, that's exactly what awaits you at the Swiss Highlands Trail! ๐ค At refreshment points, we focus on local products and friendliness to recharge your batteries ๐ชซ. After the effort, the race village becomes the scene of unforgettable moments of sharing, perfect for reliving the race with fellow enthusiasts over a local specialty: cheese ๐ง, smoked bacon, and a piece of Toblerone to end the meal ๐.
To extend the experience, the Gstaad resort is full of activities ๐. You can set aside your sneakers to take the Glacier 3000 cable car โฌ๏ธ and try the Peak Walk, the only suspension bridge in the world connecting two peaks ๐คฏ, or treat yourself to a thrilling descent on the Alpine Coaster ๐ข. If you prefer calm ๐, a walk around the Lauenen Lake (which you spotted during your race) is a must to admire the waterfalls up close ๐.
Highway to Trail! ๐ค
This is the crown jewel of the event ๐: 62 km for 3,589 mD+, a route that offers no mercy from the very first strides ๐ .
Starting from Gstaad, you immediately face the challenge: a climb of 1,500 mD+ over the first 11 kilometers towards the village of Turbach ๐. You will find yourself directly at the foot of the imposing Giferspitz, which rises to 2,542 m in altitude ๐๏ธ. After this warm-up, you will head towards the traditional village of Lauenen ๐๏ธ. You will then reach the famous alpine lake of Lauenen, then the Geltenhรผtte hut, located in a hanging valley beneath the Gรคlten glacier โ๏ธ.
The next part is designed for technique enthusiasts: a steep descent offers you a breathtaking view of the lake before tackling the climb to the col du Tungel โฌ๏ธ. You then embark on a 6 km ridge section separating the Saanenland and the Simmental (we're not talking about cows here), a mythical passage where you'll encounter the surprising craters of Gryden, a unique lunar landscape in Switzerland ๐. After crossing the cols of Trรผtlisberg and Tรผrli, you reach the col of Rรผwli and its small pond facing the Gummfluh, the iconic peak of the region ๐. One last refreshment at Zwitzeregg ๐ฝ๏ธ, a smooth section on the Hornberg plateau to let loose, and then it's time to savor the final descent towards Gstaad to cross the finish line on the main street ๐.
For this challenge, you will tackle the courses of the "Highlander Marathon" and the "Highlander 15"! ๐ช
A mythical format of 42 km with 2,680 mD+ that starts with a bang on the pedestrian street of Gstaad ๐บ.
After admiring the typical station chalets ๐๏ธ, you tackle the serious stuff with the village of Turbach, dominated by the monumental Giferspitz ๐. This alpine "pyramid" serves as the true litmus test of the race: prepare to handle nearly 1,500 mD+ concentrated over the first 11 kilometers ๐คฏ. Once your legs are warmed up, you join a beautiful single track under the Wistรคtthorn โฐ๏ธ, where you can gaze upon the border peaks of the Valais, such as the Wildhorn and the Wildstrubel ๐.
The course then leads you to the summit of Rรผwlishorn (2,234 m โฌ๏ธ) for a memorable ridge traversal, with a breathtaking view that stretches to the north face of the Eiger ๐ฆ . You will take a rest at the lake of Rรผwliseeli facing the Gummfluh, the iconic mountain of the area โ๏ธ. After the refreshments at Zwitzeregg, the Hornberg plateau offers a smoother section up to Horneggli ๐โโ๏ธ. The end of your journey crosses the forest of Hornfluh before beginning the long final descent to Gstaad.
A triumphant finish awaits you on the main avenue to conclude this rollercoaster marathon ๐.
A route of 25 km and 1,300 mD+ that offers you total immersion in the landscapes of the Bernese Oberland? โฐ๏ธ This is where it happens! โฌ๏ธ
Starting from Gstaad, you warm up in the valley of Turbach, winding between the region's typical chalets and pastures ๐ฒ. After following the Turbach river, the major difficulty of the course stands before you: a climb to the alpine meadows of Zwitzeregg ๐. Once at the Rรผwlispass pass (1,715 m), you're struck by an open panorama of the peaks of the Simmental valley ๐คฉ.
Open your eyes wide: the Rรผwliseeli lake reveals itself with the Gummfluh in the background ๐๏ธ. It's time to recharge at the second refreshment point at Unere Zwitzeregg ๐ฝ๏ธ, where you can probably taste the local alpine cheese before tackling the final ascent to the Parwenge pass (1,939 m) ๐ง. The rest is much more rolling on the Hornberg plateau, leading you to the last checkpoint at Horneggli ๐. You then bypass the Hornfluh before starting the final roll: a long technical descent and playful ๐ towards Gstaad for a triumphant finish on the main avenue ๐.
The route of the "Highlander Family" is the same as the "Highlander 25", with one difference: about 1 km before the finish, your child joins you to complete the race hand in hand ๐ค. You will cross the finish line together on the main street of Gstaad, a memory that will last forever ๐ฅฐ.
This format of 15 km with 900 mD+ is the ideal route if you're new to mountain running or if you are a fan of short and intense efforts โก.
The start is right at the heart of Gstaad, with an initial ascent winding between typical chalets and luxury hotels ๐. Very quickly, in less than 2 km, you will join the trails overlooking the Turbach valley. You will find yourself in the Bernese Oberland, with lush green pastures as far as the eye can see ๐ฒ.
Things get tougher once you reach the pasture of Grosses Eige: the slope seriously steepens ๐ to take you towards the Hornberg plateau and its artificial lake ๐๏ธ. Itโs time to catch your breath a bit before reaching the Horneggli ๐ฝ๏ธ supply point, where your loved ones can even come and cheer you on via the ski lift ๐ . After that, you circle around the Hornfluh to cross a forest worthy of a Grimm brothers' tale ๐. Save some energy for the final switchover: nearly 800 meters of negative elevation ๐ await you for a dive towards the finish line on the main street of Gstaad ๐.
You can pick up your bib at the Parish House of Gstaad.
