“Terra Nostra,” the Latins already used to say, to speak of their land 🌍. In Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, a small town in the Gard nestled in Occitanie, the Terrà Nostrail takes the phrase as its own—in a running, dusty version 🌾. The race starts in late February, when the Gard garrigue swaps its summer green for drier, more mineral hues 🍂.
The route winds between shaded woodland and the area’s typical blonde stones 🌳, with scenic openings that force you to lift your eyes from the trail despite the rocks underfoot 👀. The organizers are still fine-tuning the elevation profile of the brand-new 30 km trail, but the rolling topography of the Gard hills already promises punchy surges that set your calves on fire 🦵, with rocky paths and faster, more runnable sections. Four formats make up the trail menu: 9 km, 18 km, 30 km and a 9 km hike 🥾, and all converge on the same finish line, so the Sunday trail runner and the curious hiker end up in the same place once the effort has sunk in 🤝.
What really sets the Terrà Nostrail apart is its local roots 🧭. The race doesn’t just borrow the village’s name: every runner goes home with a neck gaiter bearing the event’s colors, and the top three overall in each distance win a unique ceramic piece, crafted by local ceramists 🏺. A market of local artisans, with pottery front and center, sets up for the occasion and keeps the atmosphere going long after the finish line 🏁. The figures from the first edition speak for themselves: sold out across its three formats, 700 participants from 16 different departments and from Belgium 🇧🇪, around a hundred volunteers mobilized and some thirty local partners brought on board for the adventure. For 2027, the team is stepping up with the arrival of the 30 km, without losing the village fête spirit that made the launch such a success 🎉.
Once you cross the line, the Terrà Nostrail keeps telling the village’s story 🏘️: the finish-line refreshment, free for everyone, comes straight from the local butcher, with sausages grilled by a team of local artisans—79 kg last year alone 🌭. Enough to refuel before strolling through the lanes of the old center of Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, between ceramist workshops and potters’ shopfronts 🎨. Anyone wanting to extend the weekend will find plenty to do nearby: Uzès’ Place aux Herbes 🌿, the millennia-old arches of the Pont du Gard 🌉, or the heritage alleyways of Nîmes.
So, ready to knead the Gard soil with your strides rather than with a potter’s wheel? 🏺
A word from the organizer:
"Organizing the Terrà Nostrail is first and foremost a story of attachment to my village. I wanted this event to look like Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie: rooted in its identity, carried by its residents, and open to everyone—whether you're an experienced trail runner or simply a curious walker discovering our paths. Seeing the first edition sell out and feeling the energy of around a hundred volunteers mobilized by my side was an immense source of pride. I think with emotion of all those who believed in this project from its very first edition, without knowing what it would become. Some even started running just to be able to take part in this race, and still keep going today with ever crazier goals. Being able to spark this momentum thanks to the involvement of the village, its artisans, and its residents is something wonderful for me. For 2027, with the arrival of the 30 km, we’re taking things up a notch, but the spirit remains the same: bringing a true village celebration to life around trail running."
