The Peak is chic! ๐
If you dream of adventure, peaks to climb, ridges to conquer, and you're not afraid to eat a little (a lot of) mud ๐ค, then we've found your Holy Grail: the Peak District Challenge. Head to Hathersage, a little piece of paradise nestled in the heart of Derbyshire, but be prepared: over there, the word โchallengeโ is no joke โ. This event is tough ๐ช, enough to make your calves tremble just reading this page ๐ฅ.
On the agenda, 4 distances within the Peak District National Park: "Gold", "Silver", "Bronze", and "Copper". We start strong with the Gold Challenge ๐ฅ: a ultra of 100 km, 3,300 mD+, and a night start at 9 PM (because apparently, the challenge alone wasnโt enough ๐). The goal? Finish in under 24 hours ๐ฐ๏ธ. Yes, you read that right, the "Gold" format is "for the Bold". Twenty-four hours trekking through moors, ridges, valleys, and cliff edges โฐ๏ธ. But if you feel that Gold might be just a bit... too Gold for this year, then the "Silver Challenge" ๐ฅ opens its arms with 75 km on the clock, 2,235 mD+, still with a 24-hour barrier. And good news: on the first night, you can choose to walk with a guide if night navigation isn't your thing ๐ฆ. You'll pass through the same postcard-like โ or survival film-like, depending on the weather ๐ฌโ landscapes and join the "Bronze Challenge" route in the second part of the course ๐ฎโ๐จ. And trust us, you'll feel like a hero crossing the finish line ๐ฆธ.
Speaking of which, the "Bronze Challenge"๐ฅ: 50 km, a "sprint" format in this cutthroat world ๐ซ . Well, a relative sprint, you have 12 hours to finish the course. It climbs from the start, you pass through Hope, Bamford, Castleton, and the magnificent valleys of the White Peak. It's the kind of trail where you go from euphoria to despair, then to blissful contemplation, all within an hour ๐ค . And if you just want a taste of the myth without leaving your joints behind, we also have the "Copper Challenge": 25 km of pure pleasure (or almost), to be completed in under 9 hours. This gives you time to enjoy the scenery, watch the sheep ๐, and even chat a bit with your inner conscience ("Why am I doing this again?" ๐ฅต). You walk along the edges of Curbar and Froggatt, conquer the Padley gorges, and finish beautifully with a magical descent towards Hathersage. Honestly, it's almost a walk in the park... except you're the one being walked, and health, well, it's in the background at that moment ๐คฃ. Are all these challenges too easy for you? Let us impress you with the "100 miles in 24h", a challenge for the most seasoned. This difficult course takes you on the 100 km "Gold Ultra" route, before heading off on the "Bronze" 50 km route ๐ฎโ๐จ. To arrive on time, you'll have to maintain a pace of 7 km/h for 4800 mD+ ๐ฅ.
In short, the Peak District Challenge is a true journey, you'll encounter grand landscapes, foot-breaking climbs, slippery descents, golden volunteers, and an atmosphere that would put all classic trails to shame ๐จ.
And after completing your challenge like a warrior ๐ฆพ, comfort is never far away! Start by visiting Sheffield, a few kilometers away ๐. There, you can taste all the local specialties: English breakfast, pie and peas, scones... Still craving nature? ๐ฟ Head to the Peak District National Park for one last shot of cliffs and plains before departing โก๏ธ. And for the curious, the mysterious caverns of Castleton await you ๐ซต.
So, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Copper: which medal are you coming for? Or rather... How many times do you want to shout "never again" before signing up for the next edition? ๐
Do you want the full experience? Then get ready for 100 km and 3,300 mD+ in 24h. With a start at 9 PM, you leave Hathersage in the dark, headlamp securely on your head, and already, the Peak District welcomes you with open arms ๐คฉ.
You cross the Dark Peaks, pass by the Robin Hood's Cave (yes, the real one), edge along the Derwent Moors, descend towards the Ladybower reservoirs (where the Dambusters trained during World War II, cool right?), and climb up to the geological oddity of Alport Castle. You continue towards Edale, then face the famous ascent of Jacobโs Ladder, to reach Mam Tor at sunrise ๐. The return is a dance between picturesque villages, forests, lush valleys, and spectacular Eastern Edges ๐ฎโ๐จ. To be a "finisher Gold"๐ฅ, you must maintain a pace above 4 km/h. And even if you don't manage, don't worry: you then switch to the "Silver Challenge", and continue the adventure ๐.
The "Silver Challenge" is 75 km, 2,235 mD+, and just as tough a challenge with a clear goal: finish in under 24 hours. You also start at 9 PM, headlamp on ๐ฆ.
The departure takes you through the dark marshes of the Peak District, then onto the ridges of Stanage Edge, up to Back Tor, with the distant lights of the valleys in sight โฐ๏ธ. After a descent towards Ladybower, you take advantage of a (relative) moment of peace by going around the reservoirs, before climbing up to Alport Castle ๐.
You then traverse Edale Valley, cross forests and Roman roads until you reach Castleton, where you deserve a break (even a short one) ๐คฏ. Then, head to the White Peak, its so British villages and limestone paths, for a grand finish along the Derwent River towards Grindleford and Hathersage. One watchword: stay the course ๐ซก. Itโs intense, demanding, but so beautiful you (almost) forget the pain ๐.
Want to test yourself without going on a commando mission? The "Bronze Challenge" is made for you ๐ฅ. 50 km, 1,140 mD+, a friendly atmosphere, and a simple goal: finish in less than 12 hours ๐. You start between 7:30 am and 8:30 am on Saturday morning. The route takes you through the Hope Valley, then towards Castleton, passing through the lovely villages of Hope and Bamford ๐. There, it gets a bit uphill, but the scenery rewards you. You then join the famous Limestone Way, passing by Peveril Castle, before heading into the natural reserves of Hay Dale. What follows is a feast for the eyes: Middleton Moor, Baslow, the Eastern Edges, and those breathtaking views of the ridges of Curbar and Froggatt Edge ๐งโโ๏ธ. You finish with a gentle descent along the River Derwent, up to Hathersage. It's an adventure designed for those who want to fill their legsโฆ and their eyes ๐.
No need to aim for the ultra to experience a great adventure! ๐ The "Copper Challenge" is 25 km, an accessible loop that doesn't lack flair ๐ฅ. You start on Saturday morning, around 9:30 am. From the first few kilometers, you follow the Derwent, cross through peaceful woods up to Baslow, and then, bam: you climb the Curbar Edges, with their impressive panoramas ๐คฉ. You continue on the Froggatt Edges, go through the Padley Gorge, then gently ascend to Millstone Edge and Mother Cap, which sounds a bit like a witch's name, but it's mostly very beautiful. Finally, you descend smoothly along public paths to Hathersage. Objective: finish in less than 9 hours. Ready? ๐
