In the month of July, get ready to Valais-gallop! ๐
To nicely wrap up this second summer month โ๏ธ, head to the Canton of Valais, in Sion, the oldest city in Switzerland ๐จ๐ญ. This little town, existing since the prehistoric era ๐ต has likely seen more than one runner, so you'll need some serious prepara-Sion (lol) if you want to make an impression ๐. The Valais Running and its two running events kick off a weekend of celebrations: Swiss National Day, Cyclosportive, and hiking ๐ฅพ, the following 48 hours promise to be intense โก๏ธ. Here, you don't need to bring your poles or hydration pack (unless you want to show off your fashion style ๐): we are set for flat and paved formats of 5 km and 10 km. You can test your power and aim for your PR on the proposed distances โฑ๏ธ, without worrying about the elevation you might encounter โ .
The course, nicknamed the Loop of the Sรฉdunois Bridges, is as unique as it is pleasant. It traverses 7 bridges and walkways ๐. In just 10 km, that's practically an activity every kilometer, pretty cool, right? Forget the technical aspect of a trail full of roots on rugged terrain, here you could almost run with your eyes closed ๐. You'll string your strides on an essentially flat and smooth surface ๐ฃ๏ธ, ideal for enjoying the view or simply clocking a new time ๐. Whether it's on the 5 km or the 10 km, you'll run alongside the banks of the Rhรดne, before turning back and passing through the downtown ๐. Be cautious, the start is at 7 PM, so if you linger too long, your late afternoon run might turn into a night run ๐. It's a chance to see the city from a new perspective ๐. And don't worry about the atmosphere, the tourists and athletes present for the weekend will help lift you โฌ๏ธ.
Once you're proudly wearing your finisher medal around your neck, think about the next step of your journey ๐ค. Sion is the kind of small town you might see featured in "Secrets of History" ๐บ. Except in this episode, you're Stรฉphane Bern ๐คตโโ๏ธ, and you'll venture to discover the area on your own ๐. Nestled amidst the mountains, the town of Sion features two castles that stand out in the landscape: Valรจre and Tourbillon ๐ฐ. If you're from the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, images of Le Puy-en-Velay might come to mind ๐. The difference is that in Valais, it's snowy mountains that serve as a natural rampart to the city, not small, colorful valleys ๐. If you come to the event with your family, the region offers a variety of activities: you can explore the natural orchards of Bramois ๐ณ, turn towards the medieval village of Saillon, or continue your walk along the banks of the Borgne to relax your sore muscles โ๏ธ.
So, end of July, see you in Valais, to make history and perhaps one day be featured on emis-Sion? ๐ฅ
Message from the organizer:
"The course, enhanced by the sunset, offers incomparable views of the peaks, the vineyards, and the castles overlooking the valley."
Let's embark on the mythical distance of 10 km ๐. Whether in competitive mode or exploration mode, this course will meet your expectations. In search of results, you can stride out and conquer your new PR on a route with few positive elevation gains and restarts โ .
The race starts in the heart of Sion, at the Place du Midi, cheered on by an exuberant crowd ๐คช. From km 1 to km 5, you shouldn't get lost: it's straight ahead โก๏ธ. After passing 2 bridges on your left, turn around and leave the banks of the Rhรดne ๐. Don't worry, you'll encounter it again a few hundred meters before the finish ๐ฎโ๐จ. Around km 7, you'll cross la Borgne again before diving into the city center ๐๏ธ.
A little fun fact slipped in here: the course crosses a total of 7 footbridges ๐. If you're up for a challenge, you can always try it as a swim & run, but that's entirely up to you ๐. In short, you'll see, it's smooth, and it's beautiful! ๐คฉ
The ideal course to challenge yourself after a busy Saturday ๐. For the 5 km as well as the 10 km, you have plenty of time to wake up, go about your activities, warm up, and perform all in the same day โ๏ธ. 7 p.m., it's still more convenient than a 5 km at 8 a.m., right? ๐ด
The circuit follows the path of the grand tour with the advantage of crossing the Vissigen Canal twice. You'll also briefly run along the banks of the Rhรดne after crossing a bridge over it. If you look to the left during your run, take the opportunity to observe the vineyards, the castles, and the natural scenery surrounding the small town of Sion.
Plus, this course is doable for the family, with registrations open from 12 years old ๐ฆ. In your opinion, who will perform better, the veteran or the youngster? ๐
