Prueba Vitoria Gran Fondo

The event in a few words

Looking to prove your mettle on the biggest cycling event in the Basque Country? 👀 You're in luck because the Prueba Vitoria Gran Fondo is held in June! 🗓️ Starting from Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Spanish Basque Country 📍, you'll ride through stunning nature, majestic mountains, and charming villages in the Álava region 🏞️. The sun will be your companion throughout this adventure! 🌞 With beautiful weather, a friendly atmosphere, and fellow cyclists 😎, what better way to celebrate the first day of summer? 💐

You'll need an early start 🌄 to tackle the routes of the Prueba Vitoria! Two paths are available to let every enthusiast showcase their pedal power. The Medio Fondo covers 100 km with an elevation gain of 1,170 m, while the Gran Fondo stretches over 207 km with a climb of 3,300 m... Yes, indeed, there are no half-measures here; the challenges range from simple to double! Be careful when signing up to ensure you pick the right route; you wouldn't want any regrets 😂. Needless to say, proper training is crucial to make sure you're ready at the start, even though the route might seem like a leisurely family ride! The Euskadi ("Spanish Basque Country" in Basque 🤓) will become your open-air textbook: visit the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir (the largest lake in the Basque Country 🤯), the Dolmen El Sotillo (a megalithic relic of Rioja Alavesa's past ☝️), and the quaint village of Urizaharra with its ancient walls 🏘️... Watch out for a stiff neck from all the scenic views you'll be taking in! 😝

Don't worry, you'll have time to soak up the sights after the race! 😉 With its medieval roots, exploring the old town of Vitoria-Gasteiz is a must! 😁 And you won't have trouble finding a sunny terrace ⛱️ to relax and savor some pintxos, the region’s famous tapas! 🤤 No need to add salt, as the nearby Añana Salt Valley is one of the oldest salt production sites in the world, with over 6,500 years of history 🧂. Good news, you can even visit and enjoy a soothing salty foot bath, perfect for recovery! 💆‍♂️ And for a drink to complement your meal, how about a little glass of wine? 🍷 You're in luck, the Rioja Alavesa is a world-renowned wine tourism region! 🌍 Laguardia is even considered the capital of wine there, and for good reason: it’s perched on a hill surrounded by vineyards! 🍇

Come and see for yourself that the Prueba isn't as tough as it sounds! 😜

A few more words

Starting from the Mendizorrotza Stadium 🏟️, you'll head towards Landa. You'll then follow the path alongside the Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir and continue to the village of Gordoa 🏘️. It'll be time to climb through the town of Salvatierra and descend to Maeztu. You'll pass through Vitoria-Gasteiz again at the 100 km mark before heading back out into the surroundings 🚴‍♀️. You'll need to cover more than 40 km to reach Lapoblacion and Meano. Another climb awaits at the Dolmen El Sotillo 🪨 before making your way to Urizaharra. Hang in there, you're almost at the finish! 💪 You'll still need to pass through the small village of Treviño, tackle a steep climb, and race towards the finish line... 🏁 that is, if you still have the legs for it 😅.
