Did you know that in Morocco, about sixty kilometers from Marrakech, there is a small village nicknamed the "Little Chamonix"? ๐ Well, that's where you have a date for your trail in the month of May ๐: the Wawgant Toubkal Trail! Head to the community of Imlil, a true gateway to the Moroccan High Atlas ๐. Located at the foot of the Toubkal โฐ๏ธ, the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa (nothing less ๐ ), you will discover the Berber culture and traditions along the kilometers! ๐โโก๏ธ Perched at 1,740 m altitude, the hamlet has remained rural ๐๏ธ, so you might cross paths with some mouflons ๐, gazelles, caracals, wild boars ๐, or even royal eagles if you look up ๐ฆ .
As you've understood, you're going into the wild! And this trail is not reserved for the elite โ๏ธ: 10 km, 21 km or 42 km, there's something for all levels ๐ฅฐ. What is certain is that you will have to prepare for the elevation of 350mD+, 1,130mD+ or 3,160mD+ depending on the race chosen ๐. Yes, indeed, mountains have to be earned! ๐ฅต But you certainly won't regret the detour, as the courses have been crafted by local athletes ๐ช, who know every path like the back of their hand ๐. To let you enjoy the wonders of the High Atlas, the trails will take you close to waterfalls and streams ๐ฆ as well as walnut and apple orchards ๐ that dot the region ๐ณ. Feel free to visit the souk after your race, and you can enjoy them in abundance! ๐
By taking part in the Wawgant Toubkal Trail, you will also discover the lifestyle of the locals and contribute to the local economy ๐ค. The event benefits the local cooperative of Imlil which supports projects to promote local products (saffron ๐ง, medicinal plants ๐ฟ, crafts ๐บ) and enables women to earn a decent living from their skills ๐ฐ. By taking your race bib, you are doing a good deed! ๐ซถ
And to continue supporting Berber villages ๐, don't hesitate to stay a little longer in the region ๐งณ. Every small town has its own souk with traditional food ๐ฅฎ and Moroccan art ๐ผ๏ธ that you won't find anywhere else! If your legs are still up for it, you might even attempt the ascent of Mount Toubkal, which peaks at 4,167 meters altitude ๐คฏ, with the help of a mule ๐ซ. Yes, yes, these animals are more skilled than they appear! ๐ In addition to traditional guides ๐บ๏ธ, the mules accompany hikers on these rocky high mountain trails! ๐ชจ
Get ready for a journey to unknown Berber land! ๐โโ๏ธ
For the 42 km, the biggest event of the weekend ๐ช, you will start at Imlil. You will head towards Taddert ๐๏ธ, then pass through the villages of Ikkiss, Tinerhourhine , and Ouanesekra. The highest point of your event will be at Tacheddirt ! ๐ You will then enjoy a descent until km 25 at Tamatert. You will visit the small village of Aroumd โฐ๏ธ before your last big climb from km 33 to km 35. All that's left is to descend to the finish line at Imlil ๐.
For this 21 km, you will start in the opposite direction of the 42 km ๐๏ธ. You will begin with a big climb up to km 5 then downhill to Azib Assougolor ๐ and uphill again after passing through Aroumd ๐.
