Don’t slow down in winter and feel the sporting energy in Moravia! Winter Run Olomouc (part of a nationwide winter running series beloved by Czechs) is a brilliant opportunity to test your form in a frosty yet incredibly hot atmosphere. Traditionally, you can choose between two dynamic winter distances: 4 km and the main 8 km race (Winter Run). The event base and the charming course are usually located in the beautiful historic city parks – Smetanovy sady – and on the exhibition grounds of Výstaviště Flora. Wide, snow-covered avenues surrounded by old trees are perfect for fast running, and the crisp air gives you a powerful energy boost. At the finish line, a unique trophy awaits – an iconic, heavy medal with a fierce winter motif and a cup of life-saving hot tea.

Winter magic on Horní náměstí: In winter, Olomouc’s main square looks like something out of a fairy tale. The monumental Baroque Holy Trinity Column (listed by UNESCO), surrounded by snow-covered townhouses, is a stunning sight. It’s also worth taking a look at the unique post-war astronomical clock (Orloj) on the town hall wall and tracking down the historic fountains scattered throughout the center, which take on a unique atmosphere in winter 🏛️.

A walk along the park’s frosted avenues: It’s worth returning to Smetanovy sady the day after the race. A long linden avenue covered with frost or white powdery snow, along with the historic Art Nouveau palm house, creates the perfect calm setting for a recovery walk, during which you can proudly parade your hard-earned medal 🌳.

Warming up in atmospheric backstreets: If it’s freezing too hard outside, take shelter around the monumental St. Wenceslas Cathedral. The tiny cobbled streets around it hide wonderfully atmospheric alternative cafés where, after a frosty effort, you can warm up with a cup of excellent coffee and homemade cake ☕.

Hot česnečka and legendary tvarůžky: Time for a classic Moravian recovery. Head to a traditional tavern or a local craft brewery (e.g. Svatováclavský pivovar or Pivovar Moritz) and order a warming, spicy garlic soup (česnečka) with croutons and cheese.
