Ultra-Trails in the Canton of Geneva

Calendar of ultra-trails in the canton of Geneva

Geneva, the ultra runners' base camp

There is no ultra-trail in the canton of Geneva on the Finishers calendar yet, but the city makes an ideal base camp for aiming at Montreux, Verbier or Valais, one to two hours away by road.

Geneva has no summit, but it looks Mont Blanc and the Alps straight in the eye 🏔️. For an ultra-trail in the canton of Geneva, runners use the canton as a base camp, train at the foot of the Salève, then head off to the starts in Valais and Vaud, all reachable within one to two hours, a rare luxury for anyone preparing for a big goal.

There is no shortage of training terrain. The trails of the Salève, just across the border, offer steep climbs to build leg strength. The banks of the Rhône and the paths of the Mandement let you rack up easy kilometers, far from the noise of the city. The nearby ridges of the Jura, accessible in an hour, round out your training with long, steady climbs. The preparation season lasts almost all year thanks to a mild climate, with long outings possible from March. The long, bright summer days stretch training hours even further 🌞.

The neighboring ultra-trail calendar offers several major events. In July, the Montreux Trail Festival takes over the shores of Lake Geneva, while the Trail Verbier Saint-Bernard by UTMB® tackles the great Valais passes. In August, the SwissPeaks Trail starts from Port-Valais for an Alpine crossing 🥾. The ultra-trails in Switzerland offer even more playgrounds to aim higher.

Chamonix, the cradle of the great ultra, is just a little over an hour away by road, so you can scout the legendary climbs of Mont Blanc before taking them on. After a long training session, a steaming hot fondue shared with friends sets your mind straight 🧀. Everyone chooses their goal according to their level, their experience on the terrain and their patience, because an ultra is built over months of calm preparation 😄. A good plan is to string together long weekends, alternating outings on technical terrain with calmer sessions to recover.
