What to do in Istanbul on Istanbul Marathon weekend?

Between bib pick-up, the Bosphorus and bazaars, here's what to do in Istanbul on marathon weekend so you don't miss anything before the finish line 🌉 .

What to do in Istanbul on marathon weekend, as soon as you arrive? 🎒

The Istanbul Marathon is run on a Sunday, but your weekend starts earlier. Bibs are collected at the Dr. Mimar Kadir Topbaş Gösteri ve Sanat Merkezi, in Yenikapı, from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October 2026 ⏰ . No bib pick-up is planned on race day: fit this mandatory stop in before thinking about sightseeing and bazaars. The marathon starts at 9:00 am, while the 15.5 km is spread over three waves, at 9:19, 9:38 and 10:05, a few hundred meters behind the main line.

A benchmark race on the Turkish calendar, the Istanbul Marathon has held the World Athletics Gold Label since 2012 and opens, by age category, a path to the World Marathon Majors Qualifiers, a real ticket to a start line at the Boston Marathon qualifying races. The bib has to be earned: the time limit falls at 6:20, enough to turn the end of the course into a race against the clock for the most cautious. Two times top the record books, 2:09'44” for Daniel Kibet and 2:18'35” for Ruth Chepngetich 🏆. Running for a good cause? The Turkish platform linked to this charity cause turns every kilometer you cover into a donation for a local NGO. Want to compare with other road races before making up your mind? marathons.com lists the world calendar of 42.195 km races.

Between two shores, which monuments should you tick off before the start? 🕌

European side: Sultanahmet, an open-air museum. The finish line drops runners right next to Hagia Sophia, just beside the former Hippodrome of Constantinople, now Sultanahmet Square, between the Blue Mosque and the obelisk. The Topkapı Palace guards its Ottoman treasures a stone's throw away, while the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar offer another kind of endurance: haggling over a carpet without cracking too quickly. A break in Gülhane Park rests the legs before heading to the Galata Bridge, which spans the Golden Horn and opens onto the more contemporary neighborhoods.

Asian side and Bosphorus cruise. The marathon starts on the Asian side, just before the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the one linking the two continents in barely 2 km of running. This Bosphorus strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, deserves a crossing without a bib: a steamboat takes visitors north, up to the shores of the Black Sea, for a view that runners don't have time to admire in the middle of a road race. In the evening, İstiklal Avenue draws a cosmopolitan crowd, perfect for celebrating your medal without rushing 🌙 .

After the finish line, how can you extend the weekend? 🍽️

Once you've finished, Turkish cuisine is waiting for you to refuel on calories. A hot börek, a balık ekmek devoured on the Galata Bridge, then a dolma to ease your conscience, before giving in, inevitably, to a few pieces of lokum. Next, head to a hammam to relax calves that have just crossed an entire continent, literally. Istanbul can also be enjoyed far from the running: it's hard to find a better running getaway less than four hours' flight from Paris, in the heart of Turkey 🇹🇷 , when the French weather turns gray in early November.

Ready to change continents?

A weekend in Istanbul plays out across two continents and several speeds. Bib for the 42.195 km to aim for a qualifying time, or for the 15.5 km to discover the Bosphorus without wrecking your calves: to each their own format, the tourist program stays the same. Book your spot for the Istanbul Marathon and join the fervent supporters packed around the Hippodrome, between two shores and a good dose of culture shock 🏁 .
