The Trail de Haute Provence is gearing up this year for its 11th edition! 🎂 After blowing out its first ten candles last year, it’s time for the THP to get back to serious business. 🎙️ So we hope you’re holding on tight, because it’s going to climb ! ⬆️ Forcalquier, a lovely town in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, welcomes you in May for the Trail de Haute Provence (THP) 🌸. Not just any time either, but during Ascension weekend! No more excuses—you already know your plan for the long weekend! The weather will (hopefully) be mild and springlike ☀️. To give you a taste of what awaits, the town’s motto is as follows: « higher than the Alps ». One thing is certain: your calves are going to burn! 🥵
Before we scare tempt you for good, let’s quickly set the scene 🌱. Forcalquier will be your starting point 📍. Located on the edge of the Via Domitia, in the heart of the Luberon and the mountain of Lure ⛰, this historic town, situated at 651 m above sea level, has it all. Pure Provençal charm to give you a great foretaste of all the treasures your race has in store... 😍
As for the distances, the least we can say is that you’ll have plenty of choice. 10 events are organized during the Trail de Haute Provence, so we promise you’ll find a shoe that fits 🦶. Small and cute, the "THP10" of 10 km is the baby of the event, to do solo or with your company in a team of 5 thanks to the "THP10 pro" format. The "THP20", with its 21 km, can’t wait to feel your feet on its trails 🌳. Otherwise, you can challenge yourself on the "THP30" and its 28 km or the "THP 40" and its 39 km that will make you sweat 🥵. The "THP50", "THP65" and the 79 km of the "THP80" will also open their doors to you (also doable as a relay). Then there’s the "THP120", a nice 120 km for the brave. It’s up to you to see whether you’re ready to take it on 😉. Finally, the (very) big one 🥩: "THP160", with its 160 km and 7,000 mD+ (ahhhh!) 😱. If you’re really too scared, there’s the "THP160" as a relay! Let’s be honest: it’s demanding and you’ll need to be trained ! In any case, no matter which distance you choose, you’ll be completing your THP event in the middle of nature 🌳. Between ridgelines, rocky spots, and typically Provençal vegetation 🪻 you’ll be in for a real treat ! 👀 If you opt for the "THP160", it will certainly be very tough physically, but you’ll enjoy a magnificent panorama of the peaks 👆. You’ll also pass over the mountain of Lure and its very welcoming wildlife. A few deer, roe deer and foxes roam there regularly 🦊. In short, you’ll almost forget the elevation gain! 🙄 And then the icing on the cake is that there are even races for the little ones: the "THP éveil" of 500 m for 3 to 9-year-olds, the "THP découverte" of 1 km for 10 to 11-year-olds, the "THP junior" and the "THP ado" of 3 km for 12 to 15-year-olds.
After your race, if you still have some strength left, we suggest visiting the land of Giono, the dream Provence, and its picturesque places. And in Forcalquier there’s no shortage of spots to discover : the Citadel, the old town, and even the narrow alleyways are all things you can admire as you pass through. If you’d like to rest your legs, sit down on a terrace and enjoy the spring sunshine while savoring a little local pastis, in moderation as always! 🥃
"The Ultra of Provence" is the longest and most demanding race of this full-scale event. 168 km, 7,400 mD+—we can assure you, your calves are going to burn ! 🔥 And it’s not for nothing that this race is part of the Ultra League 🌎. And if you’d rather run it with others, this race also exists in relay 👯 format—teams of nine, classy 😎.
As for the course, the starting gun will go off in Forcalquier at 6 p.m. 🏁, and "that evening, before it even begins, you’ll already be in the mood "! The crowd of supporters will indeed be there to give you a good boost 🎉. Headlamp on 🔦, you’ll head out for a first crazy night in the hills of Forcalquier 🌙. You’ll first head toward the hamlet of Ybourgues, then on to the village of Limans.
After these first strides that will get you into the swing of things 🛁, you’ll set your sights on Ongles, and there, remember to turn your headlamp up to the max because you’ll pass through the remarkable remains of Vière, a sight not to be missed! 🤓 After taking it all in, the first aid station will be waiting for you. You’ll be able to catch your breath and refuel (and you’ll need it 🤕). This well-deserved break will be short, though, since your next stage will take you through the villages of Lardiers and Saumane. Watch out, it climbs hard after that up to the Col de la Roche and the Baisse de Malcort! 📈
And what comes next ? "It goes on (again and again)", on your way to the Lure resort, to tick off km 60, which will be your first life base. No time to take it easy, though, since a solid climb will take you up to the summit of the Montagne de la Lure. Your calves will take another hit with the many ascents, but promise, it’s worth it!
You’ll have done the biggest part! Then you’ll head back toward Jas des Bailles. You’ll be able to pick up the pace and enjoy some technical descents. But in trail running, everything you go down, you inevitably have to climb back up! So get ready to climb up to 913 m in altitude before dropping back down toward Saint-Etienne-les-Orgues, a small village at the foot of Lure. By then, you’ll already have covered 110 km ! 😮 But no time to catch your breath. You’ll continue, this time through a more Provençal 💜 and more even landscape. No more big climbs and big descents—you’ll now be running at a lower altitude. It will also be time to switch your headlamp back on! You’ll discover splendid hamlets, including Lurs, where you’ll find an aid station, before reaching the village of Fontienne where the last aid station will be.
You’ll then be at the foot of the Truques climb, the final challenge of the course. You’ll see Forcalquier in the distance, waiting for you 👟. But to reach it, you’ll have to cross the Mourres geological site, with its stone mushrooms 🍄, whose story began 25 million years ago. Final moments of the race: the finish line 🏁. With your head full of memories, the celebration will continue in the THP village and in Forcalquier.
It’ll be hard to come down from your little cloud after this magnificent 168 km adventure ! 😍
The "THP120" is 122 km, 5,550 mD+ 🥳 —we can assure you, your calves are going to burn ! 🔥 And it’s no coincidence that this race is part of the Ultra League 🌎.
Almost the entire route follows that of the "THP 160", notably as far as the village of St-Étienne-les-Orgues. After that, we’re counting on you to give everything you’ve got left to tackle the remaining 20 km toward Forcalquier! You’ll pass through Fontienne, where your final aid station awaits. A thrilling adventure full of emotion will come to an end for you. Enjoy that moment with the crowd of supporters waiting for you! 🎇
If the "Ultra de Provence" still scares you a little, but you still want to take part in a long trail, then the "THP80" is made for you ! 😉 With its 80 km and 3,400 mD+ 😰, it has nothing to be ashamed of compared to its big brother of 160 km 👬. Then, just like its big brother, this race can be run as a relay, in teams of 4 👯. This year the route has changed to make way for a more technical course. Just like the "THP160" and the "THP120", you’ll discover plenty of surprises throughout your journey 🎁.
Back to serious matters, the start 🏁 of the race will be given in Ongles, early in the morning 🌄. You’ll head toward Lardiers with a gradual climb ↗️ that will get your legs moving right from the start. Admire the sunrise and build up your strength 💪 because you’ll be facing more than 1,330 mD+ before reaching the next aid station ! 😋 You’ll discover the magnificent landscapes of the Montagne de Lure 🏞️, with nature that will reward your efforts. There you are at the Station de Lure ⛷️, where you’ll find a refreshment area and you can tell yourself you’ve already completed half of your trail 🫶. After you’ve regained your strength, you’ll tackle the biggest challenge of the route: the summit of Montagne de Lure ☝️.
Then push on to the liquid aid station at Notre-Dame de Lure, where you’ll take in a whole host of incredible green landscapes ! All these panoramas will help you hold on 🌈. Look up and in the distance you’ll spot the second-to-last aid station at Saint-Etienne-Les-Orgues, a small village at the foot of the Montagne de Lure. With a full belly and a light heart, you’ll set off on the last part of your race. The last aid station will be in Fontienne, a typical village of the Alpes de Haute Provence that is crossed by the GR6 🥾 hiking trail and is therefore used to seeing athletes tread its land. And there you go, it will almost be the end of the adventure of this Ultra de Provence... You’ll pass through the Truqués, the Mourres and then Forcalquier will open its arms to you 🏅, and you’ll be able to cross that famous finish line to the applause of the many spectators who came out in force.
The THP80 can be done as a 4-person relay 🤪.
For you, seasoned runner, the "THP65" and its 65 km are waiting for you ! 😉 With 2,740 mD+, you’ll need courage and strong calves to finish this trail. The village of Lardiers will set the tone, since that’s where you’ll start 🏁. As the start location is different from the other races, the THP has thought of everything. A shuttle will be provided and will leave from Forcalquier to take you to the start 🚎.
This route will be the perfect opportunity for you to experience a concentrated taste of everything the land of Giono has to offer 😍. As soon as you cross the arch in Lardiers, you’ll get right to the heart of the matter. Lure will be there, facing you, patiently waiting for you to come challenge it ⛰. Wide trails through the pine trees will lead you to the Bergerie du Gros Chêne 🐑. You can take the time to admire this majestic tree 🌳, full of wisdom, which will pass on good vibes to help you carry on with your race. Then you’ll make your way through a beech undergrowth. A bit of shade and coolness—no one says no to that! 😥 As you leave this forest, the magical Lure ridgelines will enchant you and point you toward the Summit of Lure, nestled at 1,864 m above sea level.
Even if it’s not the season ⛷, you’ll take a little detour via the Lure ski resort, which has existed since 1937. There, you’ll find an aid station that is accessible by car (which means your loved ones can come cheer you on 🙋) ! A very beautiful descent will then await you and lead you to the Chapel of Notre Dame de Lure ⛪️, lined with bicentennial lime trees. Without much difficulty, you’ll be able to keep your pace up to the commune of Saint-Etienne-les-Orgues. By then, you’ll have covered 45 km !
For your final strides, head to Forcalquier. Along the way, you’ll take a gentle climb toward Fontienne (for one last aid station), following the Laye stream. The last challenge of the route is the climb of the Truques, with, in the distance, Lure staring at you insistently 👀. Finally, Forcalquier will welcome you with arms wide open to bring this wonderful adventure to a close. The loop will be complete, but even so, the party will be in full swing in the THP village 🎉.
If you like the marathon but you’re tired of asphalt and flat ground 🛣️, we’ve got an excellent solution for you: the "THP 50"! You’ll set off on 50 km and 1,700 mD+ through the mountains of Haute Provence 🌄. This distance is a great compromise for those who haven’t yet taken the leap into very long distance. The route is described as a less technical course and more accessible 🫶; what’s more, it goes through new villages!
You’ll start the race from the commune of Montlaux 🏘️. This commune is crossed by the Lauzon 💧, a river that runs through the department. During the first 15 km up to Ganagobie, you’ll cross an ever more lush nature 🍃, in the calm of the forest 🌲 and the natural surroundings, where we hope the sun ☀️ will bring you a little happiness. Before reaching your first liquid aid station 🥤, you’ll pass not far from the Ganagobie Abbey ⛪. It’s one of the main tourist attractions of this small village, delighting visitors with its beautiful, colorful medieval mosaics 🎨. We hope you won’t have seen too many colors 🌈 during this first part of the race—but if you have, you’ve now arrived at your first aid station in the Ganagobie parking lot. You’ll already have run more than 15 km with 552 mD+.
Off you go for the next section, which will make your head spin 🥵 with lots of small turns right from the restart—you’ll need to trust your footing 🦵 until the 20th km, around the Bois de Lurs. Once again, your eyes will be in for a treat: you’ll spot magnificent olive groves 🫒 that truly characterize the small villages of Provence. Lurs, located in the Durance Valley, will be your second aid station 🥣. Look back—you’ve done half the course! For this second phase, you’ll quickly pass above the Lauzon and the Ravin de Monessargues. Monessargues is also known for its hydraulic oil mill 🧪. Finally, you’ll set your sights on your last aid station in Pierrerue at the 29th km.
Final stretch on the Route de Fontienne, with... Fontienne at km 39 👀 in your sights. Your final kilometers will still take a bit of strength 💪 and courage, but every step will bring you closer to Forcalquier 🥰 where many people are waiting for you in an amazing atmosphere 🕺.
Starting from Limans, this more accessible route will let you discover the areas around the THP. From the first 10 kilometers, you head deep into nature to reach Ongles. After a slightly leg-breaking climb (about 300 mD+ 🥵), you arrive in Saint-Étienne-les-Orgues at km 19. The route then heads toward Fontienne at km 29, where a descent awaits you. But no D+ without D-! One last climb, a descent, and you’ll arrive in Forcalquier. Well done, champ 💪.
28 km and 1,100 mD+. That’s what awaits you during the race 🙌.
With a start right in the heart of Forcalquier, you’ll be able to enjoy a magnificent view of the old town and the citadel. In short, that Provençal charm will warm your heart from the very first strides! 🏃♀️ To get you going, a beautiful long descent will take you to the foot of the first challenge of the course: a 3 km climb with 400 mD+ 😰. You’ll then reach Les Arnaud for your first aid station.
By then, you’ll already have covered 8.5 km! 💪 A climb is in order up to the Clot de Melly, which peaks at 900 m elevation. This won’t be the time to let go! Final little efforts on the paths that will lead you straight to the village of Fontienne. There you’ll find your second and last aid station. Once you’ve caught your breath, it’s the Truques climb, just waiting to be tackled. This section is shared by all THP races! 🔥 Final moments of the race. You’ll have the chance to pass through the geological site of the Mourres, with its stone mushrooms 🍄. Finally, you’ll cross the finish line in Forcalquier. The citadel glimpsed in the morning will reveal itself to you in new colors 😍.
Small but cute, the 22 km of the Mourres will let you discover Forcalquier and its surroundings in the most beautiful way possible 😍. 800 mD+... You’ll still need to be well prepared ! 💪
Right from the start arch 🏁, you’ll set off for more than 3.5 km of climbing 📈. You’ll pass near the Saint Marc chapel ⛪️, then you’ll follow a beautiful olive grove, before finding yourself in a more mineral landscape, typical of the Mourres. Once the climb is over, you’ll be delighted to see a beautiful technical descent that will take you straight to a dam with astonishingly blue water 💦. By then, you’ll have covered 4 km of the race! You’ll continue on stony trails for more than 5 km, alternating climbs, false flats, descents and softer sections. At certain moments, you’ll be able to lengthen your stride and enjoy yourself to the fullest! At Fontienne, you’ll find an aid station 🥤. This end of the route is shared by all the races, so you can enjoy a great atmosphere and invigorating encouragement on the trails 👏.
After getting your strength back, you’ll still have a great section to tackle: the Truques climb, with, opposite, the Montagne de Lure ⛰, which you’ll be able to admire in the magnificent light of the end of the day 🌄. Then head for the geological site of the Mourres and its stone mushrooms, which date back several million years 😮. The final strides will bring you back to Forcalquier. Once you’ve crossed the finish line, you’ll discover a city in celebration ! The adventure will continue with music in the THP village 🎉.
The "THP10 Pro" is in every respect the same program as the "THP10", but for companies 😉.
The "THP10" is an ideal race for those who’ve just started trail running! 🔓 It’s a route of 10 km with 330 mD+ 👣. After a warm-up to the beat of the music, you’ll be ready to take on the challenge! 😉
The start will be given in the heart of Forcalquier 🏁. You’ll set off on a wide path, which will become narrower and steeper with each stride. Moving from an olive grove to a more mineral landscape, these changes of scenery will be a feast for the eyes ! 😍 After nearly 2.5 km of climbing, you’ll see below a basin of shimmering blue water 💦. That will be your next destination! When you reach this dam, you’ll have already covered 3 km. Then comes a section of about 1.5 km where rolling terrain and short climbs follow one another, eventually leading to the summit of the Mourres ⛰. Your aid station will be nearby too !
Yes, it’s already time to head back to Forcalquier! A pleasant, runnable descent as you move among the stone mushrooms of the geological site of the Mourres will be on the menu for this final stretch 🍄.
