At the tip of England, where the land plunges into the Atlantic, Cornwall hides a winter monster that lives up to its name 🌊. The Arc of Attrition by UTMB®, which traces its route along the South West Coast Path, the longest national trail in the United Kingdom 📍. Obviously given its name, this race draws a true arc around the southwestern tip of Great Britain 🇬🇧. Nicknamed simply the « Arc » by regulars, the event has taken on a whole new dimension by joining the UTMB World Series 🏅. Four formats make up the menu: Arc 100, Arc 50, Arc 25 and Arc 12. Seaside, forests and steep trails—the scenery is more than present! 🏞️
It all started in 2015, driven by MudCrew, a Cornish organizer determined to create the toughest race in the county 🏴. In its early days, the event came in a single format—and not the smallest—since it was a 100 miler 😲. Given the gargantuan distance, only about fifty daredevils lined up at the start. Little by little, its reputation quickly grew into a true thigh grinder 🦵. Shorter formats then broadened access to the myth, until the race became one of the country’s biggest trail events 🏃♀️. Later on, entering the UTMB® fold propelled the « Arc » onto the international stage, with a new date scheduled every year 🗓️.
Now it’s time for the terrain 🧭. We start with the one and only: the Arc 100 linking Coverack to Porthtowan over 161 km and nearly 5,300 mD+, passing the legendary Land's End (literally the end of the country) with a finish toward the Eco Park 🌳. The trail strings together technical singletrack, endless steps, exposed cliffs and ankle-breaking sections that have become famous for good reason 🤓. It might start to sound scary, but trust us, it’s worth it. Cut the distance in two and take on 80 km with the Arc 50. It starts from the stunning Minack Theatre in Porthcurno, loops around Land's End and heads to Porthtowan, totaling around 2,550 mD+ 📈. There are also other, more accessible distances that are no less worthy. First, the Arc 25 over 41 km with 1,240 mD+ and the Arc 12 over 24 km and 980 mD+. What more could you ask for? Distances for every set of calves, with spectacular trails and sweeping ocean views as a bonus 🌅.
To begin with, running this race is an impressive physical and mental feat, but now it’s also a gateway to THE world trail scene ✨. Of course, the UTMB® is what this paragraph is about ✍️. Each distance awards Running Stones (one for the Arc 12, two for the Arc 25, three for the Arc 50 and four for the Arc 100). A quick reminder won’t hurt: these precious tokens give access to the lottery for the UTMB World Series Finals, for the annual rendezvous in Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc 🏔️. Along the way, every finisher also earns their UTMB Index, the world ranking that’s useful if you want to place your level against the rest of the global pack 🌍. That’s not all! There’s a second gateway—British this time—to the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia. In short, the Arc of Attrition by UTMB® becomes the ideal hunting ground for anyone who dreams of one day setting their shoes on unforgettable start lines 💭.
But where does this reputation come from? Winter, the real one ❄️. Freezing start, long hours of darkness, headwinds, driving rain, powerful waves, and mud up to the ankles. Sounds pretty good, right? 😵💫 There, you face a race where self-sufficiency becomes king. Just to warn you, more than one starter out of two never sees the finish arch on the Arc 100 🫣. But along the course, the volunteers nicknamed Arc Angels keep watch, comfort, and relaunch lost souls 😌.
Between two grimaces, Cornwall also knows how to treat you 🥧. A piping-hot Cornish pasty will warm frozen hands, and the local cream tea patches up battered bodies! 😄 Otherwise, the hearty eaters will go for the one and only fish and chips, facing the sea 🍟. For scenery, the Minack Theatre carved right into the cliff or the island castle of St Michael's Mount are well worth the detour before or after the race (well, if you can still walk 🙃). Art lovers will be charmed by St Ives and its unique light, while surfers will keep an eye on the Atlantic rollers crashing in just below the finish at Porthtowan 🏄.
All that’s left is to choose your distance, tighten your laces, and leave the rest to the Cornish weather… good luck 😅.
