If you're reading this, something about the name "Bukhara" caught your interest ๐ค. Well spotted! Hang on, it's just beginning ๐.
Update your calendar, alarm clock, alert... Whatever you want! โฐ In April, the streets of Bukhara will be animated in a way even the caravanners of the Silk Road wouldn't have anticipated ๐ช. Thousands of runners with bibs will flood the cobblestone alleys of one of the oldest cities in Central Asia ๐ต, in the glow of illuminated monuments ๐ฎ. Head to Uzbekistan, where the nights are very pleasant ๐ with temperatures ranging between 10 and 23ยฐC. Let's just say that running at night will be a blessing given the daytime temperatures ๐ฅ. We're in the middle of the desert after all! ๐๏ธ Well, not quite, because the city was built on a gigantic oasis in the heart of the Kyzylkum ๐ด.
The Bukhara Night Race offers four distances to ensure no one is left on the roadside ๐ฃ๏ธ: 21 km for conquerors, 10 km for those who want to enjoy themselves without too much suffering, 5 km for the curious, and 2 km of Nordic walking for the wise who have understood that knees do not grow on trees ๐ฆต. The course starts from the Ark Citadel ๐ฐ, this massive fortress whose first stones date back to the 5th century BC ๐ฎ and which served as a residence for the emirs of Bukhara until 1920. From there, the route traverses the illuminated alleys of the historic center, skims past the 17th-century madrasas, brushes past the merchant domes, and passes at the foot of the Kalon Minaret ๐: An exceptional monument of brick erected in 1127 that stands 47 meters tall. Its reputation was such that Genghis Khan himself, upon entering the city ๐, is said to have tipped his head to look at it and according to legend, his hat fell, forcing him to stoop to pick it up in front of his whole army ๐. The only unintentional bow of his career ๐ฌ. For the half marathon, the course was designed to offer a maximum of monuments and illuminated streets, 21 km through 25 centuries, it's a rather good value history/effort ratio ๐. At least they're not playing you for a fool!
And since the Uzbeks are known for having big hearts ๐, they are also planning children's races ๐ง, so that our budding champions can also enjoy the excitement of this event! ๐ฑ They can run 60 m, 300 m, 600 m, or 1 km depending on their age.
Bukhara, with more than 2,500 years of history crammed into 300 hectares of intact historic center ๐ซ. Founded according to legend by a Persian prince named Siyavush, the city became in the 9th century the capital of the powerful Samanid kingdom and the largest intellectual center of the Islamic world: its libraries attracted scholars from all over the East ๐. Essentially, if you lived in the 10th century and wanted to be the smartest person in the room, you came to Bukhara ๐ค. In 1220, Genghis Khan sacked the city after a 15-day siege. The city survived, rebuilt, and now boasts 140 UNESCO-listed monuments. Marco Polo, for his part, never managed to set foot there despite his legendary travels, although he praised it in his writings โ๏ธ. You can go there. And even run ๐. Marco would have loved a race bib ๐.
When the clock stops โฑ๏ธ and your breath returns (it always does, even if you doubt it at the time ๐ฎโ๐จ) Bukhara will continue to give ๐ค. The Lyabi-Khauz basin โฒ๏ธ, the beating heart of the old city surrounded by centuries-old mulberries and tea terraces ๐ต, is the perfect place to recover while watching locals play cards as they have for centuries ๐. They haven't run 21 km, and it shows ๐ฉ. For food ๐: grilled shashlik on a live fire ๐ข, Uzbek plov with lamb fat and chickpeas (the best glycogen reload the world's gastronomy has ever produced, and no one can say otherwise ๐), hot samsa from the tandoor oven ๐ซ, and Bukhara halva with sesame and honey ๐ฏ, a specialty that traders carried on camel back for 5,000 km across deserts ๐ต.
The Silk Road passed here, yours will pass through sweat ๐ฅต. It's less glamorous, but much more cardio ๐ซ. So grab your race bib, Bukhara is waiting for you ! ๐ซต
The most comprehensive course, certified by World Athletics / AIMS ๐ . Start of this half-marathon from the Ark fortress. You will take a large loop around the historic center in the city, a foray to the north of the city and back. The profile is generally flat, with a slight incline between km 7 and km 13 ๐, and a small final climb towards km 20 to remind you that it never really ends smoothly ๐ . Water stations every 3 km approximately ๐ฐ, and two solid refreshment stations to keep you going ๐.
The 10 km of the Bukhara Night Race is a tightened version around the heart of the old city. You will start from the same starting point at the square of the Ark of Bukhara, loop through the historic alleys then head north before returning. The profile is almost flat until km 7, then a steep climb in the last two kilometers ๐บ, a little end-of-race gift ๐. Three water refreshment points ๐ง and a solid one ๐ at km 9 will be waiting for you when you really need it ๐ซก.
The great loop of the historic center of Bukhara in its most accessible version: you will start from the Ark of Bukhara, then head north, before making a complete tour around the perimeter of the old city and beginning your return. The profile is very rolling with a few small undulations ๐, two water refreshments and a solid one at the end of the course ๐ will await you. The best monuments/kilometers ratio of the whole race ๐.
