The event in a few words

If you're reading this, something about the name "Bukhara" caught your interest ๐Ÿค”. Well spotted! Hang on, it's just beginning ๐Ÿ˜‰.

Update your calendar, alarm clock, alert... Whatever you want! โฐ In April, the streets of Bukhara will be animated in a way even the caravanners of the Silk Road wouldn't have anticipated ๐Ÿช. Thousands of runners with bibs will flood the cobblestone alleys of one of the oldest cities in Central Asia ๐Ÿ‘ต, in the glow of illuminated monuments ๐Ÿฎ. Head to Uzbekistan, where the nights are very pleasant ๐ŸŒ™ with temperatures ranging between 10 and 23ยฐC. Let's just say that running at night will be a blessing given the daytime temperatures ๐Ÿ”ฅ. We're in the middle of the desert after all! ๐Ÿœ๏ธ Well, not quite, because the city was built on a gigantic oasis in the heart of the Kyzylkum ๐ŸŒด.

The Bukhara Night Race offers four distances to ensure no one is left on the roadside ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ: 21 km for conquerors, 10 km for those who want to enjoy themselves without too much suffering, 5 km for the curious, and 2 km of Nordic walking for the wise who have understood that knees do not grow on trees ๐Ÿฆต. The course starts from the Ark Citadel ๐Ÿฐ, this massive fortress whose first stones date back to the 5th century BC ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and which served as a residence for the emirs of Bukhara until 1920. From there, the route traverses the illuminated alleys of the historic center, skims past the 17th-century madrasas, brushes past the merchant domes, and passes at the foot of the Kalon Minaret ๐Ÿ•Œ: An exceptional monument of brick erected in 1127 that stands 47 meters tall. Its reputation was such that Genghis Khan himself, upon entering the city ๐ŸŒ†, is said to have tipped his head to look at it and according to legend, his hat fell, forcing him to stoop to pick it up in front of his whole army ๐Ÿ‘‘. The only unintentional bow of his career ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. For the half marathon, the course was designed to offer a maximum of monuments and illuminated streets, 21 km through 25 centuries, it's a rather good value history/effort ratio ๐Ÿ˜Ž. At least they're not playing you for a fool!

And since the Uzbeks are known for having big hearts ๐Ÿ’–, they are also planning children's races ๐Ÿง’, so that our budding champions can also enjoy the excitement of this event! ๐ŸŒฑ They can run 60 m, 300 m, 600 m, or 1 km depending on their age.

Bukhara, with more than 2,500 years of history crammed into 300 hectares of intact historic center ๐Ÿ’ซ. Founded according to legend by a Persian prince named Siyavush, the city became in the 9th century the capital of the powerful Samanid kingdom and the largest intellectual center of the Islamic world: its libraries attracted scholars from all over the East ๐Ÿ“š. Essentially, if you lived in the 10th century and wanted to be the smartest person in the room, you came to Bukhara ๐Ÿค“. In 1220, Genghis Khan sacked the city after a 15-day siege. The city survived, rebuilt, and now boasts 140 UNESCO-listed monuments. Marco Polo, for his part, never managed to set foot there despite his legendary travels, although he praised it in his writings โœ๏ธ. You can go there. And even run ๐Ÿƒ. Marco would have loved a race bib ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

When the clock stops โฑ๏ธ and your breath returns (it always does, even if you doubt it at the time ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ) Bukhara will continue to give ๐Ÿค—. The Lyabi-Khauz basin โ›ฒ๏ธ, the beating heart of the old city surrounded by centuries-old mulberries and tea terraces ๐Ÿต, is the perfect place to recover while watching locals play cards as they have for centuries ๐Ÿƒ. They haven't run 21 km, and it shows ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. For food ๐Ÿ˜‹: grilled shashlik on a live fire ๐Ÿข, Uzbek plov with lamb fat and chickpeas (the best glycogen reload the world's gastronomy has ever produced, and no one can say otherwise ๐Ÿš), hot samsa from the tandoor oven ๐Ÿซ“, and Bukhara halva with sesame and honey ๐Ÿฏ, a specialty that traders carried on camel back for 5,000 km across deserts ๐ŸŒต.

The Silk Road passed here, yours will pass through sweat ๐Ÿฅต. It's less glamorous, but much more cardio ๐Ÿซ€. So grab your race bib, Bukhara is waiting for you ! ๐Ÿซต

4 reasons to join this race

The surreal scenery ๐Ÿ•Œ
Running at night at the foot of the Kalon Minaret, 47 meters of brick erected in 1127, lit up in the dark, is the kind of thing that makes you pull out your phone mid-race even though you swore you wouldn't. The historic center of Bukhara is UNESCO listed, intact for centuries, and it's entirely yours for a few hours. No guided tour will ever give you that.
A race truly for everyone ๐Ÿƒ
21 km for adventurers, 10 km for the pragmatic, 5 km for the curious, and 2 km of Nordic walking for those with golden knees and unyielding wisdom. No matter your level, no matter your current condition, Bukhara has a distance waiting for you. The only real bad decision is not to come at all ๐Ÿ˜‰.
The night changes everything ๐ŸŒ™
Bukhara by day is beautiful. Bukhara by night is another planet. The illuminated madrasas, the deserted alleys, the domes shining under the Central Asian stars โ€” an atmosphere that even the best travel photographers struggle to capture. Try as you might to explain it to your friends upon return, they won't really understand. That's why they should have come ๐Ÿ˜‡.
The after is as good as the before ๐Ÿ˜‹
A musical evening awaits you at the finish, because ending a race with a DJ in an ancient city is a privilege few marathoners can tick off their list. And then? The Lyabi-Khauz pool, a hot tea, shashlik fresh off the grill, and sesame halva that has traveled the Silk Road for centuries. Recovery has never tasted so good ๐Ÿข.

A few more words

The most comprehensive course, certified by World Athletics / AIMS ๐Ÿ…. Start of this half-marathon from the Ark fortress. You will take a large loop around the historic center in the city, a foray to the north of the city and back. The profile is generally flat, with a slight incline between km 7 and km 13 ๐Ÿ“ˆ, and a small final climb towards km 20 to remind you that it never really ends smoothly ๐Ÿ˜…. Water stations every 3 km approximately ๐Ÿšฐ, and two solid refreshment stations to keep you going ๐Ÿ˜‰.
