Keep running in the 3 Valleys! ⛰️
3 valleys, 7 resorts, 1 grand raid! 😎 The Grand Raid Kiprun 3 Valleys invites you to swap your skis for a pair of trail shoes 🏃♀️. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, between the Tarentaise Valley and the Maurienne Valley lies the renowned 3 Valleys ski area ⛷️. You're probably familiar with one of its resorts: Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, Orelle, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, and finally Brides-les-Bains! 📍 Nestled in the heart of the mountains of Savoie, this brand new event of the Ultra League aims high for the first weekend of August 🤩.
The distances will vary, allowing all trail runners to discover the trails of this preserved nature environment 🌳. The giant of the Grand Raid, starting from Moûtiers, is "The Ultra of the 3 Valleys"! This ultra-trail lives up to its name with its 170 km and 12,000 mD+ (yes, more than the UTMB), the event will take you around the area 🤯. And don't think about taking the ski lifts of the resorts to save a climb or two, we see you coming 😂. If you're not confident about handling the adventure solo, you can team up with 7 partners to tackle the event in 8-person relay! 👯 Be careful when choosing your segment, as some sections of the race are very technical with significant elevation gain ⚠️. The course is among the richest in the region ✨, combining breathtaking panoramas between mountains, lakes, and forests 🏞️, and a unique technicality to the trail 😌.
For ultra enthusiasts, there's also "The Odyssey of Caron" of 110 km and 5,880 mD+. A significant challenge with a start at 3,200 meters altitude, at the summit of Cime de Caron! We hope you're not afraid of heights 😅. The course is the same for all trail runners, only the starts differ, spread over the long 170 km course 🤓. We decrease the mileage and elevation and from the start at Les Menuires, you will face "The Challenge of the Masse" with 70 km and 3,300 mD+. Another long trail of 50 km and 2,624 mD+ is the "Marathon of the 3 Valleys" starting from Saint-Martin-de-Belleville 🏘️. The two short trails of the Grand Raid Kiprun 3 Valleys are "The Balconies of Saint-Jean" with 25 km and 1,150 mD+ starting from Saint-Jean-de-Belleville and "The Starry of the Thermes" of 10 km and 818 mD+. This last one will start from Brides-les-Bains with a finish at Moûtiers, so you'll run the course in reverse of the other events 🔁. But don't worry, you won't encounter runners going the opposite direction, as the event takes place the night before in nighttime 🌖.
After celebrating your finish in Moûtiers 🏁, continue enjoying a big breath of fresh air at the top of the 3 Valleys 🍃. Well, we're not proposing hikes, as your legs will surely need more restful activities after tackling all the area's peaks 😬. Luckily, numerous lakes and rivers in the Vanoise Massif will allow you to refresh yourself! 💦 The water temperature, directly from the glaciers 🏔️, may not allow for swimming, even in summer, but it will do wonders for your legs: the ideal recovery 😇. To prepare your post-race meal 🍽️, we recommend going hunting for wild blueberries! 🫐 If you keep your eyes open, you'll easily find them 👀. You can make delicious pies or jams 😋. Still hungry? Then head to one of the resort villages or a high-altitude refuge to savor a croziflette or diots in red wine, typical regional dishes 🤤.
You will quickly become raid crazy about the 3 Valleys! 😍
You surely know the 3 Valleys for its impressive ski area ⛷️, but here, no ski lifts or skis under your feet: you will climb and descend using your legs 🦵.
Starting from Moûtiers, you will make a first small ascent, just to warm up your legs, towards Feissons-sur-Salins and descend to Brides-les-Bains ⛷️. Once these 10 kilometers are behind you, there's no turning back, you will have to face the weekend's giant! 💪 You will start with tackling a first major ascent of almost 1,000 meters of elevation 😅. It gets you right into the thick of things! You will arrive at Lac Bleu, at the top of the Courchevel station. You'll scramble over the peaks and reach Méribel-Mottaret for a well-deserved refreshment! 🍽️
The Grand Lac, the Mont de la Chambre, the Lac du Montaulever... And here you are in the heart of Val Thorens ⛰️. You can admire the glaciers while refreshing yourself and continue your journey through the Vanoise massif. Here you will pass the highest point of your challenge, at 3,200 meters altitude: the Cime du Caron. Beware, a descent of almost 1,500 mD- will follow, which could heavily damage your thighs and put your mind to a severe test 😅.
Once in Orelle, you will have about 100 kilometers left to cover. And it won't be easy as you will have to cross the valleys again! 😬 You will need to climb back up to the Col de la Vallée Étroite and make your way to the Lac du Lou. Your next refreshment stop will be just before the Menuires station. As you can guess, each refreshment stop comes with a new ascent 📈. You will head towards Lac Longet and Lac de la Montagnette and enjoy a descent to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville.
Your last climb will take you to the top of the Col du Châtelard, right in the middle of the needles! You will descend to the Deux Nants for a final refreshment before facing the end of your course: the Gollet, summit of the Valmorel station. You will only have one portion left to maintain: the grand descent towards Moûtiers to cross the finish line 🏁.
The relays will be conducted as follows:
Finish: Moûtiers - Sports Complex
For this 110 km, you will start from the Cime de Caron, at 3,200 meters above sea level. You will follow the route of the 170 km 🤓.
For this 70 km, you will start from the Pointe de la Masse and follow the route of the 170 km 🤓.
For this 50 km, you will start from Saint-Martin-de-Belleville! 🤪 You will then follow the same route as the 170 km 🤓.
