Finally, a bit of freshness! 💇♀️ Coming straight from Belgium, in Charleroi, in the heart of Wallonia, the Charleroi Métropole International Marathon! Between us, you can simply call it the Charleroi Marathon. On the program, four distances: a legendary marathon of 42.195 km, compliant and mouth-watering, and a half marathon, always there to accompany its double 😉, a 10 km and a 5 km 🌱.
It’s simple: the organizers pulled out all the stops by highlighting local players 👩🌾 and the rich and vast heritage 🏤. The watchword: an accessible course and as little monotony as possible! 🏃♂️ For that, they’ve put together a route that alternates between city and nature 🌳 with entertainment 🤪 all along, as well as fully stocked refreshment stations. Yum! 🍌 In addition to passing right through the heart of the city, you’ll also be invited to discover the surrounding area, more rural and offbeat! The start takes place at the Grand Palais of Charleroi, before setting off to discover the city and its history 🏙️. So grab your bib quickly to experience the race in the heart of Charleroi 🎽.
When you know that Charleroi, the largest metropolis in Wallonia, is also its greenest city ☘️, it makes you want to go! If you didn’t know, there are still 17 parks and 37 km of hedges! 🌿 You can understand why it’s surprising when you learn that its nickname is the “Black Country”! But that has nothing to do with the scenery—it’s simply because of the old coal mines 🔦 that began to disappear in the 1960s. Even if you’re unlikely to venture into an old mine, you’ll have plenty to admire. While Belgians can proudly boast world-renowned comic strips 📓, many virtuosos of the pencil are from Charleroi 👨🎨. Their iconic characters adorn the city with statues. What’s more, in April, you’re rather lucky: temperatures are mild ☀️. Especially if you’re going there to run a great marathon... 🌬️
To top it off, Charleroi is a festive 🌈 city. There’s always something to celebrate, between the “Festival of Love” 💌, the “Seagulls Festival” 🐦, “Bien le Bonjour de la Pédale”... 🚴♀️ The Charleroi International Marathon won’t let you get bored! 👯♀️
A word from the organizer:
"Charleroi is sport, it’s celebration, it’s generosity. It’s this energy, this friendliness and this solidarity that define our city. And that’s exactly what we want to bring to life through the Charleroi International Marathon: a major sporting event, but above all a great popular celebration, driven by the Carolos and open to everyone. Because that’s Charleroi!"
The marathon will follow the same course as the half-marathon up to the municipality of Goutroux 🏘️. You'll pass by the old train station 🚉 and then cross the Bois de la Charbonnière 🌲. You'll head to the "ASH Monceau" football field and continue on to the municipality of Wespes. Then you'll need to hang on, because the "wall at 30" will hit at the level of the small municipality of Aulne, lost in the middle of nature! 🌿 The way back will be super fast, as you'll run along the quays of the Sambre all the way to the finish line at the Grand Palais de Charleroi! 🏁
The first 5 km of the route will follow the same itinerary as the 5 km race. After passing through the Lower Town, you will run along the Charleroi–Brussels Canal before crossing it 🌉. You will then go around the Monceau-sur-Sambre cemetery and arrive in the municipality of Goutroux. You won’t stay there very long, because you will then head back onto the Sambre quays, which you will follow down to the finish line at the Grand Palais de Charleroi! 🏁
Starting from rue du Cazier 📍, you’ll set off to loop around the track in the Hublinbu neighborhood 🏃➡️, then head towards the Terril-Siège Saint-Charles and return to the Haies neighborhood. The second part of your route will follow the same track as the 5 km! You’re going to have to give it everything 💪.
The youngest runners get their race too! The Kids Run allows children aged 5 to 12 to start in a festive atmosphere and to experience their own race moment just like the grown-ups. A great way to discover the joy of running, pushing yourself, and crossing the finish line with a smile! 🏅
