The event in a few words

Ah, Mexico City 🇲🇽! It’s not just the beating heart of Latin America—it’s also the stage for one of the wildest and most vibrant running adventures on the planet 🪐. For many years, the Mexican capital has hosted the Mexico City Marathon! This legendary event turns Mexico’s streets into a huge collective celebration 🎉. If you’re looking for your next big running challenge, know that this race brings together thousands of runners from the four corners of the globe 🌍. You come to run, but also to soak up a unique energy and live an experience that’s simply spectacular—more than just sport 🏃. But watch out: get your lungs and thighs ready, because running here takes true mental strength and excellent physical preparation 🏋️!

To tame this monument, you first have to get used to its playground, set at an altitude of about 2,240 meters 🏔️. Now you see why it’s one of the biggest marathons in Latin America and why its reputation as a leg-breaker is well established? 🤓 At such high altitude, the air starts to get pretty thin 🥵. Many runners even recommend arriving several days beforehand to give your body time to acclimatize ✈️. And yes, it’s no joke 😬. As for the weather, don’t be fooled—you won’t be melting in the heat! The event takes place in late August, a time when the capital offers: a cool morning between 12 and 15°C, then the thermometer climbs to around 22°C during the day 🌡️. Still, be careful: sometimes a light rain joins the party, and it can cool things down fast 🌧️. A little important reminder: altitude is a huge challenge there—you’ve got that 🫡. But here there’s also a factor that won’t work in your favor (or anyone’s, for that matter): pollution ♻️. Yep, it can tire the body out pretty quickly, especially when you’re running. But don’t panic—the atmosphere will sweep all that away and carry you stride after stride! 🌬️

The course of this flagship event, aka the marathon, is 42.195 kilometers. Sombrero and maracas in hand, it’s time to start 🪇. You’ll set off from the legendary Estadio Olímpico Universitario, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which saw the greatest athletes in history during the 1968 Olympic Games 🏅. And soon it’ll see you fly by at a crazy pace 👀. As you run through the city, your strides will take you onto the majestic Paseo de la Reforma. This historic avenue inspired by the great European boulevards will have you pass the famous Ángel de la Independencia 🏛️. Proof that there won’t be only runners along this route. Next you’ll cross Chapultepec Park, a huge area with a real castle—straight out of your wildest dreams ⭐️. A building pulled right from an Aztec fairy tale. To wrap things up, the city hasn’t said its last word: there are still the typical neighborhoods and alleyways dotted with urban art and Mexican traditions 🌳.

What makes this race absolutely unforgettable is the popular fervor that accompanies participants from the first to the last kilometer 📣. Mexico becomes one big, loud, festive, ultra-motivating guard of honor 🥁. Expect to run into whole families shouting your name, even if you don’t know them 🤭. And also traditional mariachi bands, making their trumpets ring out to the runners’ rhythm 🎺. After pushing your limits and mastering the lack of oxygen, the grand finale has one last thrill in store: a triumphant finish at the Zócalo 📍. It’s THE city’s central square, surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace. Oh yes—this is truly not an ordinary marathon! 🤩

We hope we didn’t scare you with those oxygen issues; in any case, just in case, the organizers set up official in-person training programs! 🥸 So yes, it’s better to be in Mexico to do them on site, on the track at Utopía Meyehualco, located in the Iztapalapa district 📍. Otherwise, on their social networks they also post weekly schedules 📋. That way, you’ve got everything you need to train as well as possible and be ready on race day ✨.

With all that, there’s no way you won’t finish in style 💝. After the effort, you’ll be able to truly reward your body by tasting the region’s gastronomic richness. When you think of Mexico, you quickly think of its world-famous tacos, its melty-cheese quesadillas, and its hot sauces—which you might not be dreaming of devouring… 🌶️ Once you’ve tasted all that, your homemade tacos will never taste quite the same again 🌮.

It’s time to come and smash your PR in México! 💥
