The event in a few words

You know those races you hear about and tuck away in your mind thinking "one day"? ๐Ÿ‘€ Well, that day is in September. Heading to Thimphu, capital of Bhutan ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น, a small Himalayan kingdom most people couldn't place on a map ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ. Here we are at 2,350 meters of altitude, legs will heat up faster than elsewhere ๐Ÿ”ฅ, the air will feel like breathing something clean for the first time in your life ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ and the Himalayan peaks will literally overshadow you ๐Ÿ”๏ธ. By the way, for your general knowledge ๐Ÿง  (yes, we're considering your board game nights ๐ŸŽฒ), it's the only officially carbon-negative โ™ป๏ธ country in the world, covered by 70% forests protected by the Constitution ๐ŸŒฒ. Frankly, when you set foot here ๐Ÿฆถ, you feel it immediately. And it will give you wings for the kilometers that await you ๐Ÿ˜„.

Five formats will be offered, convenient if you're indecisive ๐Ÿ˜„. The "Gross National Happiness Marathon" of 42.195 km ๐Ÿ…: it's the big marathon, the real one, crossing Thimphu from end to end. The altitude will play its role from the first kilometers, not in a brutal way, mind you, but rather insidious ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ. Runners arriving without specific high altitude preparation will feel it from km 5 onwards. If you're looking for a real challenge in an exotic setting, go for it as if you're in the starting blocks ๐Ÿš€. The "Mindfulness Half Marathon" ๐Ÿง˜ with 21 scenic kilometers through the city is the ideal option to fully experience Bhutan without playing with fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ over the full distance. You'll run alongside the Wang Chhu (which also crosses India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ and Bangladesh ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ) for several kilometers before heading back toward downtown, with passages in front of dzongs and chortens ๐Ÿ›•. You can also participate in the Peace Run of 10 km โ˜ฎ๏ธ. An inclusive race, allowing you to run in the heart of Thimphu amid an international collective festive atmosphere ๐Ÿณ๏ธ. Runners from 20 different countries sharing the same pavement, the same mountain air, and the same confusion at the serenity of monks watching them pass by without flinching ๐Ÿ˜…. Bhutan does not judge levels. It welcomes. And it welcomes very well: with a smile ๐Ÿ˜ƒ, yak butter tea if you're curious ๐Ÿง, and hospitality that will make you wish you were staying longer ๐Ÿซถ. The "Green Run" of 5 km ๐ŸŒฑ is perfect for families ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง’โ€๐Ÿง’, beginners, and those who decide to keep their legs fresh for exploring the city after the race. The last one on the menu for the day is the "Memorial Run" of 2.5 km ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ: a course around the National Memorial Chorten, a white stupa built in 1974 for world peace, around which hundreds of devotees turn every morning reciting mantras for over 50 years ๐Ÿ™. It's the shortest format, non-timed, and perhaps the one that gives you the most to think about once the line is crossed. Sometimes 2.5 kilometers is enough to change something ๐Ÿคฒ.

The course runs alongside the Wang Chhu river ๐Ÿ’ฆ, meanders through neighborhoods with houses ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ painted with traditional vibrant motifs ๐ŸŽจ (you'll love it!), lotus flowers ๐Ÿชท. It also passes at the foot of the massive Tashichho Dzong, this monastery-fortress from the 13th century which still houses the king's offices ๐Ÿ‘‘ and a community of monks under the same roof ๐Ÿฏ and offers you at every turn a view of mountains that exceed 7,000 meters ๐Ÿ”. Exceptional monuments you won't miss! Youโ€™ll run where monks stroll in the morning in burgundy robes, where Thimphu's legendary stray dogs nap in the sun โ˜€๏ธ without a care in the world about your time ๐Ÿ•. And by looking up, because we guarantee you will look up, even at km 35, you'll spot the silhouette of the Buddha Dordenma, a 51-meter gilded bronze statue perched on the hill overlooking the entire valley ๐ŸŒŸ. As a race backdrop, it's pretty hard to beat ๐Ÿฅฐ.

Once the race is over and your legs are finally rested somewhere, Bhutan is just waiting for you to discover its little secrets ๐Ÿคซ. Start by losing yourself among the stalls of the weekend market ๐Ÿฅ‘ in Thimphu, the country's largest farmers' market, where producers come down from their valleys with lovingly and skillfully grown vegetables ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ. And if you still have some energy in your legs โšก๏ธ, climb up to the Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest a monastery suspended at 3,120 meters on a vertical cliff in Paro, where legend says the Guru Rinpoche landed on the back of a flying tigress in the 8th century to meditate in a cave ๐Ÿง˜. You were stressing about the elevation of the half. He was flying on a tiger ๐Ÿ…. And that's okay. At the table ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ, because youโ€™ve definitely earned a good meal, order an Ema Datshi without hesitation ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ: the national dish, based on hot peppers and melted cheese, which Bhutanese eat as an entrรฉe, main course, and sometimes for dessert if the mood suits ๐Ÿคช. Wash it down with ara, the local rice alcohol served in small wooden cups ๐Ÿถ, and start to understand why these people claim to be happy.

Ready to flash your best smile at the finish line? ๐Ÿ A finisher in Bhutan is statistically 3x happier than others, just saying ๐Ÿ‘€.

4 reasons to join this race

Run for something greater than your time โ˜ฎ๏ธ
This marathon is AIMS certified and recognized by World Athletics, but what truly sets it apart is what it funds. Education for underprivileged children, community development, sustainable tourism with high value and low impact. Each race number sold directly contributes to concrete projects in a country making choices the rest of the world is slow to follow. Youโ€™re not racing against the clock of a typical race โฑ๏ธ. Youโ€™re running for something. And in the evening, when you rest in bed, youโ€™ll realize it ๐Ÿ™
Your cardio will hate the altitude, your brain will love the rest ๐Ÿง
Thereโ€™s a precise moment, somewhere between km 5 and km 12, when your body realizes itโ€™s at 2,350 meters and oxygen isnโ€™t quite as available as usual. Itโ€™s uncomfortable, itโ€™s new, and thatโ€™s exactly why you must do it. Because we donโ€™t grow by running courses we know by heart. We grow by running where conditions are different, where the body is surprised, where effort takes on a new dimension. And while your lungs negotiate with the altitude, your eyes behold Himalayan peaks over 7,000 meters, 13th-century monasteries. Itโ€™s the only place in the world where you can suffer physically and be mentally at peace simultaneously ๐Ÿง˜
The prayer flags donโ€™t fly for nothing along your route ๐ŸŽ
In Bhutanese Buddhist tradition, prayer flags are meant to spread their blessings in the wind every time they move. Each gust carries a prayer to the universe. In Bhutan, they are absolutely everywhere, throughout the city, on all roads, on all paths ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ. This means that throughout your race, thousands of prayers are literally floating above your head. Weโ€™re not saying it will cut minutes from your time. Weโ€™re not saying it wonโ€™t either. What we are saying is that running under Himalayan prayer flags with peaks in the background and monks circling the chortens at dawn is a sensory and spiritual experience no other marathon in the world can offer you. And thatโ€™s objectively priceless ๐Ÿฅฐ.
There is definitely a distance for you ๐Ÿซต
Five distances for one day. The GNH Marathon at 42 km for the brave who want to cross Thimphu at high altitude and keep glorious memories ๐Ÿ… The Half Marathon at 21 km for those who want the Himalayan scenery without tempting the altitude challenge over the full distance ๐Ÿง˜ The Peace Run at 10 km for those who want to bite into the event without their calves holding a grudge the next day โ˜ฎ๏ธ The Green Run at 5 km for families and those who know Bhutan is also savored at a slower pace ๐ŸŒฑ And the Memorial Run at 2.5 km around the sacred chorten to prove you donโ€™t need to complete 42 kilometers to experience something unforgettable ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Five formats. One setting. Zero valid excuses to stay home ๐Ÿ˜.
