You know those races you hear about and tuck away in your mind thinking "one day"? ๐ Well, that day is in September. Heading to Thimphu, capital of Bhutan ๐ง๐น, a small Himalayan kingdom most people couldn't place on a map ๐บ๏ธ. Here we are at 2,350 meters of altitude, legs will heat up faster than elsewhere ๐ฅ, the air will feel like breathing something clean for the first time in your life ๐ฌ๏ธ and the Himalayan peaks will literally overshadow you ๐๏ธ. By the way, for your general knowledge ๐ง (yes, we're considering your board game nights ๐ฒ), it's the only officially carbon-negative โป๏ธ country in the world, covered by 70% forests protected by the Constitution ๐ฒ. Frankly, when you set foot here ๐ฆถ, you feel it immediately. And it will give you wings for the kilometers that await you ๐.
Five formats will be offered, convenient if you're indecisive ๐. The "Gross National Happiness Marathon" of 42.195 km ๐ : it's the big marathon, the real one, crossing Thimphu from end to end. The altitude will play its role from the first kilometers, not in a brutal way, mind you, but rather insidious ๐ฎโ๐จ. Runners arriving without specific high altitude preparation will feel it from km 5 onwards. If you're looking for a real challenge in an exotic setting, go for it as if you're in the starting blocks ๐. The "Mindfulness Half Marathon" ๐ง with 21 scenic kilometers through the city is the ideal option to fully experience Bhutan without playing with fire ๐ฅ over the full distance. You'll run alongside the Wang Chhu (which also crosses India ๐ฎ๐ณ and Bangladesh ๐ง๐ฉ) for several kilometers before heading back toward downtown, with passages in front of dzongs and chortens ๐. You can also participate in the Peace Run of 10 km โฎ๏ธ. An inclusive race, allowing you to run in the heart of Thimphu amid an international collective festive atmosphere ๐ณ๏ธ. Runners from 20 different countries sharing the same pavement, the same mountain air, and the same confusion at the serenity of monks watching them pass by without flinching ๐ . Bhutan does not judge levels. It welcomes. And it welcomes very well: with a smile ๐, yak butter tea if you're curious ๐ง, and hospitality that will make you wish you were staying longer ๐ซถ. The "Green Run" of 5 km ๐ฑ is perfect for families ๐งโ๐งโ๐งโ๐ง, beginners, and those who decide to keep their legs fresh for exploring the city after the race. The last one on the menu for the day is the "Memorial Run" of 2.5 km ๐๏ธ: a course around the National Memorial Chorten, a white stupa built in 1974 for world peace, around which hundreds of devotees turn every morning reciting mantras for over 50 years ๐. It's the shortest format, non-timed, and perhaps the one that gives you the most to think about once the line is crossed. Sometimes 2.5 kilometers is enough to change something ๐คฒ.
The course runs alongside the Wang Chhu river ๐ฆ, meanders through neighborhoods with houses ๐๏ธ painted with traditional vibrant motifs ๐จ (you'll love it!), lotus flowers ๐ชท. It also passes at the foot of the massive Tashichho Dzong, this monastery-fortress from the 13th century which still houses the king's offices ๐ and a community of monks under the same roof ๐ฏ and offers you at every turn a view of mountains that exceed 7,000 meters ๐. Exceptional monuments you won't miss! Youโll run where monks stroll in the morning in burgundy robes, where Thimphu's legendary stray dogs nap in the sun โ๏ธ without a care in the world about your time ๐. And by looking up, because we guarantee you will look up, even at km 35, you'll spot the silhouette of the Buddha Dordenma, a 51-meter gilded bronze statue perched on the hill overlooking the entire valley ๐. As a race backdrop, it's pretty hard to beat ๐ฅฐ.
Once the race is over and your legs are finally rested somewhere, Bhutan is just waiting for you to discover its little secrets ๐คซ. Start by losing yourself among the stalls of the weekend market ๐ฅ in Thimphu, the country's largest farmers' market, where producers come down from their valleys with lovingly and skillfully grown vegetables ๐งโ๐พ. And if you still have some energy in your legs โก๏ธ, climb up to the Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest a monastery suspended at 3,120 meters on a vertical cliff in Paro, where legend says the Guru Rinpoche landed on the back of a flying tigress in the 8th century to meditate in a cave ๐ง. You were stressing about the elevation of the half. He was flying on a tiger ๐ . And that's okay. At the table ๐ฝ๏ธ, because youโve definitely earned a good meal, order an Ema Datshi without hesitation ๐ถ๏ธ: the national dish, based on hot peppers and melted cheese, which Bhutanese eat as an entrรฉe, main course, and sometimes for dessert if the mood suits ๐คช. Wash it down with ara, the local rice alcohol served in small wooden cups ๐ถ, and start to understand why these people claim to be happy.
Ready to flash your best smile at the finish line? ๐ A finisher in Bhutan is statistically 3x happier than others, just saying ๐.
