Have you heard about the High Atlas? We're not talking about the Titan from Greek mythology, but the mountain range in Morocco 🇲🇦.
Head to the province of Al Haouz in the region of Marrakech-Safi for an adventure that will take you to cloud nine 🌌. At the beginning of July, the ski resort at Oukaimeden trades its skis ⛷️ for your trail running shoes 👟 for an intense weekend with the Trail Atlas Oukaimeden! ☀️ As for the weather at this time, you'll be well served: pleasant temperatures (15-25°C), no heatwave like in the city 🌆. Plus, you’ll have long days to enjoy the stunning high-altitude desert landscapes around you 🏜️.
With 8 events spread over 2 days, there's something for every leg! Whether you're a seasoned ultra-trailer 💪 or a curious beginner looking to discover mountain trail running 🌱, the UTAO has thought of you! The "Challenge L'Ouka" (67 km over 2 days with 3860 mD+) for those hungry for elevation changes 🤤 just like the "Challenge Agnouziz" over two days but with a total of 46 km to cover, the "Trail Imnane" (42 km) for those who want a real challenge 🔥, the "Trail of the Three Summits" (25 km) for an intense discovery ⚡, the "Trail of the Valley" (21 km) accessible yet tough 💯, the "Trail of the Chalets" (16 km) to taste the altitude 🥾, the "Mini Trail Awoto" (10 km) for a gentle start 😊, and even a "Kids Trail" (3 km) for the little champs 🏆. Yes, we don't want any envy. Trail running is for everyone! 🤲 In short, you can come with your family and everyone will find their happiness! 👨👩👧👦. Suffice to say that your thighs will remember it, but your eyes too, and that's what's important 🤩. As for the terrain, there's no kidding with the technicality 🛠️. The course is a pure concentrate of Berber mountain 🥤. You will tread on ancestral paths, cross areas of loose rocks, as opposed to lush oases 🌳, and even cross passes that require true expertise 🎢. You will pass through incredible sites like the summit of Oukaimeden, the Col de Tizi n'Eddi, or the valley of Ourika. It's raw, it's dry 🌵, and that's exactly what we love in high-altitude trail running 📈. Landscapes like this one are nowhere else on the globe 🌍. It's truly a golden opportunity to add the real Morocco to your travel trail bucket-list ✈️.
Forget the clichés of Morocco by the beach 🏖️. Here, it's the authentic Morocco of the mountains 🏔️, the one few tourists know 🤫. The Oukaimeden is a ski resort in winter ⛷️ (yes, you can ski in Morocco, the snow is not a myth 😮) and a paradise for trail runners and hikers in summer 🏃. Enjoy your stay to explore the valley of Ourika 🌿, visit the perched Berber villages 🏘️ and observe the rock carvings 🗿. Don't forget to stop by Marrakech just an hour and a half away with its Jemaa el-Fnaa square 🐍, its colorful souks 🌶️, the Majorelle Gardens 💙, and the Bahia Palace 🏰. On the dining side 🍽️, treat yourself to the tagine 🍲, the couscous, the sweet-and-salty pastilla 🥧, street skewers 🍢, and Moroccan pastries 🍰 (corne de gazelle, chebakia) with a nice mint tea 🍵.
So, ready to reach the peak of your health? Be careful though: after the effort, the hardest part will be avoiding a tagine overdose. That's the real downside of success! 🥇
The "Ouka Challenge" is the toughest of the Trail Atlas Oukaïmeden 🌶️ routes. It takes place over two days ✌️ and combines the "Trail Imnane" of 42 km as well as the "Trail of the Three Summits" of 25 km.

Your journey will start at Oukaïmeden heading south! You will follow the road 🛣️ and a stream 💦 (more or less filled depending on the period) until km 4 where a first small ascent awaits you. It will take you to 2,948 m of altitude, a perfect moment to enjoy the view 👁️. You will then descend on technical trails and pass through the Berber villages of Tamgaist, Ouanskra, and Tacheddirt 🏘️. After a small loop in the heart of the dwellings, you will follow Tinerhourdine at km 18 on a descending trail 📉. You will cross Ikkiss at km 20 then Amskere at km 22 before reaching Arg at km 25. You will be at the lowest point of your race at this moment, at about 1520 m. The calm before the storm 🌪️, as a tough climb of 1,218 mD+ will rise before you. You will reach its peak 🔝 at km 36. The last km, mainly flat, will bring you back to your starting point to cross the finish line 🏁.
The "Three Summits Trail" of 25 km is an iconic race for experienced trail runners seeking challenges 🥇 and magnificent panoramas 👌.
The route crosses three spectacular summits ⛰️ of Oukaïmeden, combining elevation and technicality. Be prepared 🧳 for this challenge.
You will start from the station 🎿 heading west towards the first summit. Its ascent will begin at km 2 and continue until km 11. The elevation gain? Well, it's 680 mD+ over 9 km. It's tough! 💪 After climbing, there will naturally be... descent. Watch out for rocky passages at this point 🪨. After a loop 🔁, you will start the ascent of the second summit at km 14, the smallest of the three at 2,818 m of altitude. No rest once it's behind you, there are three summits, after all 😉. This one will make you climb 562 mD+ 📈 at over 3,000 m of altitude before the final descent to Oukaïmeden and the finish line 🏁.
The "Valley Trail" and its 21 km is an ideal race for trail runners seeking a balance between performance and enjoyment 👌.
The route weaves through the heart of the valleys of Oukaïmeden, the valley of Oussertek and the Ouka plateau near the chalets, alternating natural trails, technical passages, and open panoramas over the High Atlas 🏔️.
You will start from the station along a stream 💦 (more or less full depending on the season) heading south of the station. At km 2.5, you will begin a descent 📉 of almost 1,000 mD-. You will reach the lowest altitude (1,818 m) at km 9. You will pass by a few dwellings before starting the ascent back. Your climb will take you through the small village of Imzough 🏘️ and around Gliz to reach the plateau at 2,735 m. You will pass by a small pond 🛶 at km 17 and then travel the last 4 km on a flat terrain before the finish line. 🏁
If you want to experience the atmosphere of trail running in the high mountains without pushing yourself too hard 🛑 for too long, the "Chalets Trail of 16 km is the perfect distance for you 🫵. The course stays atop the resort ⛷️ and offers magnificent views of the traditional stone chalets 🪨. It’s a dynamic route, with some revivals that will get your heart rate up 🫀, but the landscapes are there to reward you. 📈 You’ll pass through pasture areas where you'll surely encounter some herds, adding a pastoral touch to your outing. 🐑
The "Mini Trail Awoto" is the ideal entry point 🚪 for beginners or those who want to enjoy some speed. ⚡ The course is less rugged than others but retains all the charm of the Atlas with playful trails 😜. You will start beautifully with a nice uphill of 116 mD+ over 1 km. At km 6, you'll take some switchbacks before skirting a small lake at km 8. The last two km, relatively flat, will bring you back to the finish line 🏁.
It's a perfect distance to introduce yourself to trail running at altitude while admiring the surrounding peaks 🏔️. A pure moment of simple happiness accessible to all athletes. 😊
The "Kids Trail" is a race specially designed for children, to introduce them to the joy of trail running in the mountains safely. ⛰️
